What week does the intermaxillary segment form?
By the 6th week, the inter-maxillary segment is formed from the fusion of the paired medial nasal prominences and the maxillary prominences.
Which structure is derived from the intermaxillary segment of the embryonic face *?
More precisely, the rounded lateral angles of the medial process constitute the globular processes. It is also known as the "Intermaxillary segment". It gives rise to the premaxilla.
What is the intermaxillary segment that arises as a result of the fusion of the two medial nasal processes during embryonic development?
Around the 5th week, the intermaxillary segment arises as a result of fusion of the two medial nasal processes and the frontonasal process within the embryo. The intermaxillary segment gives rise to the primary palate.
What does the primary palate become?
By the 6th week the primary palate, formed by the two maxillary and two medial nasal processes, separates the developing oral and nasal cavities. Subsequently, between 6th and 8th weeks, the secondary palate is formed from two palatal processes (outgrowths of the maxillary processes).

The secondary palate of mammals, the bony plate that separates the nose from the mouth, is formed by the ingrowth of two opposing shelves, one from the left and one from the right. These palatal shelves commence development as processes that grow downwards from the maxillary processes each side of the tongue.
What is primary and secondary palate?
The primary palate or pre-maxilla includes that portion of the alveolar ridge containing the four incisors. The secondary palate forms the remaining hard palate and all the soft palate. Orofacial clefts result from an embryopathy in which there is failure of the frontonasal process and/or fusion of the palatal shelves.
What is the Frontonasal process?
The frontonasal process is a prominent structure in the earliest phases of facial development, and its formation is the result of an exquisitely sensitive signaling system that begins with the synthesis of retinoic acid in a localized region of ectoderm opposite the forebrain and continues with the action of shh ...
Is the Premaxilla the primary palate?
The primary palate develops from the medial frontonasal processes and is a transient structure from which the upper lip and the premaxillary palate (anterior to the secondary palate) form. The secondary (or definitive) palate, which forms the roof of the mouth, develops from the maxillary processes of BA1.
What is the Premaxilla?
: either of a pair of bones of the upper jaw of vertebrates between and in front of the maxillae.
Where is the frontonasal process located during development quizlet?
The frontonasal process gives rise to the upper face, which includes the forehead, brigade of nose, primary palate, nasal septum, and all structures associated with the medial nasal process.
Which layer of embryo is formed first?
One of the germ layers developed during animal embryogenesis is the endoderm. The inner layer of the gastrula, which grows into the endoderm, is formed by cells migrating inwards along the archenteron. It is the first layer that needs to be created.
Which structure is a primitive mouth that appears between the maxillary and mandibular processes?
The maxillary and mandibular processes are derived from the first branchial arch. The first branchial arch, also termed the mandibular arch, forms the lateral wall and base of the stomadeum, the primitive mouth that appears as a slight depression of the ectoderm surface.
What merges to form the upper lip?
Results: The maxillary prominence and medial nasal prominence form the upper lip, whereas the lateral nasal, medial nasal, and maxillary prominences form the nose. There is fusion of the maxillary prominence with the medial nasal prominence. This fusion has not been previously described.
What structure is in the way of the lateral palatine processes at 7 weeks in utero?
Develops center of the upper lip which is the Philtrum and the Premaxilla. What structure is in the way of the lateral palatine processes at 7 weeks in utero? THE TONGUE, is in the way of the lateral palatine processes.
What is the Palatine process?
Medical Definition of palatine process
: a process of the maxilla that projects medially, articulates posteriorly with the palatine bone, and forms with the corresponding process on the other side the anterior three-fourths of the hard palate. — called also palatal process.
How is palate formed?
The palate is formed by the palatal processes of the maxilla. The central part of the lip (prolabium) and the premaxilla arise from the medial nasal prominences of the frontonasal process and the lateral alveolar segments from the lateral processes of the maxilla.
What forms the secondary palate and what teeth are contained in it?
It contains the central and lateral incisors. Swellings of the maxillary prominence form shelves that project medially but that are separated by the tongue. When the tongue no longer occupies the space between the palatal shelves, these processes fuse together to form the secondary palate.
How is premaxilla formed?
Developmentally, however, it is derived from at least two components, the maxilla proper, forming in the region of the canine and molar teeth, and the premaxilla, arising in the incisal region. In most mammals other than man, these two bones remain more or less dis tinctly separated by sutures throughout life.
Which part of palate develops from Frontonasal process?
Cleft Palate
Upper lip formation, one of the first facial features to be completed, requires precise fusion between the maxillary prominences and the medial nasal tissues, an outgrowth of the frontonasal prominence.
What structures Embryologically contribute to the formation of the face?
The ectoderm is well around the stomodeum by the fourth week of embryonic development and contributes to the formation of the face and the nasal and oral cavities.
What is 2nd pharyngeal arch?
Second arch
The second pharyngeal arch or hyoid arch, is the second of fifth pharyngeal arches that develops in fetal life during the fourth week of development and assists in forming the side and front of the neck.
What is secondary palate cleft?
Secondary palate: The secondary palate is the back portion of the hard palate (the portion behind the incisive foramen), including the posterior alveolar ridge and all of the soft palate and uvula. ... In a palate without a cleft, the incisive foramen cannot be seen, because it is covered by the mucosa of the palate.
What is a bilateral cleft palate?
A bilateral cleft lip is a common birth defect in which a baby's lip doesn't form properly, resulting in splits (clefts) on both sides of the lip.
What is secondary palate in mammals?
The secondary palate of mammals is a bony shelf that closes the ventral aspect of the rostrum. ... Certain mammal-like reptiles illustrate stages in the development of the palate in which the shelves projecting medially from each premaxilla and maxilla do not meet in the midline.
