A strobilus (plural: strobili) is a structure present on many land plant species consisting of sporangia-bearing structures densely aggregated along a stem. Strobili are often called cones, but some botanists restrict the use of the term cone to the woody seed strobili of conifers.

Where is strobili found?

Strobili or cones are found in some pteridophytes (like, Selaginella and Equisetum) and all gymnosperms.

What is a strobili Class 11?

The strobili bearing microsporophylls and microsporangia are called microsporangiate or male strobili. The microspores develop into a male gametophyte which is highly reduced called as a pollen grain. The cones bearing megasporophylls with ovules or megasporangia are called macrosporangiate or female strobili.

What are strobili made of?

Strobili are obovate and nonapiculate (not pointed at the apex), up to 35mm long by 22mm wide, and composed of up to nine whorls of stalked, peltate sporangiophores bearing elongate sporangia on the lower surface.

What is a strobilus and what is an advantage of having one?

What is the possible advantage of this location for the strobili? The strobili hold the sporangia that produce the spores; having the strobilus up off of the ground increases the efficiency of spore dispersal.

Do Ferns have strobili?

Whisk ferns lack strobili. These primitive plants are closely related to ferns. Examine the living ferns on display. ... Rhizomes are modified horizontal stems bearing roots, that run along or just underneath the ground, and spread ferns and fern allies around.

Is strobilus a Sporophyte or gametophyte?

Strobilus is the spore bearing structure so it is the sporophyte generation. It is present in many species of terrestrial plants and it consists of sporangia. It is also commonly called as cone. The male strobilus consists of microsporophylls that bear microsporangia and produce microspores through meiosis.

What do you mean by strobili?

A strobilus (plural: strobili) is a structure present on many land plant species consisting of sporangia-bearing structures densely aggregated along a stem. Strobili are often called cones, but some botanists restrict the use of the term cone to the woody seed strobili of conifers.

What is strobilus in gymnosperms?

cone, also called strobilus, in botany, mass of scales or bracts, usually ovate in shape, containing the reproductive organs of certain nonflowering plants. The cone, a distinguishing feature of pines and other conifers, is also found on all gymnosperms, on some club mosses, and on horsetails.

What are male strobili?

The male strobili are typically about 0.4-0.8 in (1-2 cm) in diameter and form on the lower part of the tree. The female strobili are much larger and form on the upper part of the tree. The male strobilus is composed of many modified leaves, called microsporophylls, which are spirally arranged about a central axis.

How are Strobili different in pteridophytes and gymnosperms?

In pteridophytes both microspores and megaspores are released from their respective sporangia, whereas in gymnosperms, megaspore is permanently retained. ... Gymnosperms are seed plants (spermatophytes), while there is no seed in pteridophytes.

What are mycorrhizae Class 11?

Mycorrhizae are fungi that have developed a symbiotic relationship with the roots of plants. From plants they generally gain access to organic molecules while the plant gains improved access to water and minerals. Like other types of organisms mycorrhizae exist in different varieties.

What are gymnosperms Class 9?

Gymnosperms are non-flowering plants belonging to the sub-kingdom Embophyta. The seeds are not enclosed in an ovary or fruit. They are exposed on the surface of the leaf-like structures of the gymnosperms. They can be classified as Coniferophyta, Cycadophyta, Ginkgophyta and Gnetophyta.

Do marchantia have strobili?

equisetum,salvinia,pteris,marchantia

Do angiosperms have strobili?

The ovules in angiosperms are encased in an ovary, not exposed on the sporophylls of a strobilus, as they are in gymnosperms. Angiosperm means "covered seed". The ovules develop into seeds, and the wall of the ovary forms a fruit to contain those seeds. Fruits attract animals to disperse the seeds.

Is strobili found in Selaginella?

The genus Selaginella is classified in the division Lycophyta, which includes the numerous plants commonly known as clubmosses and spike mosses. Similar to their close relatives, Selaginella plants develop strobili, spike-like reproductive organs that form on fertile branches.

What are strobili in Pteridophytes?

The upright stalk bears a spore-bearing, cone-like structure (strobilus) at its tip. The strobilus is composed of numerous scale-like sporophylls, each bearing sporangia in the axils. The stem and leaves are vascular, unlike true mosses.

Are gymnosperms autotrophic or heterotrophic?

Gymnosperms are seed plants adapted to life on land; thus, they are autotrophic, photosynthetic organisms that tend to conserve water.

What is the relationship between Sporophyll and strobili?

Pinecones, mature fronds of ferns, and flowers are all sporophylls—leaves that were modified structurally to bear sporangia. Strobili are structures that contain the sporangia. They are prominent in conifers and are known commonly as cones: for example, the pine cones of pine trees.

What is Strobilus in Lycopodium?

In Lycopodium, the strobili are made up of modified leaves (sporophylls), each of which bears a sporangium on its adaxial (upper) surface (Fig. 1). Look for the sporangia on the adaxial surface of the leaves. Also look closely at the sporangia; they are open and the spores have been released.

What is cone or Strobilus give example?

A reproductive structure that consists of sporophylls or scales arranged spirally or in an overlapping fashion along a central stem, as in horsetails, some lycophytes, and many kinds of gymnosperms. For example, the cones of pine trees are strobili. 2.

What is the function of the strobilus of the horsetail?

Horsetails develop specialized structures known as a strobilus (plural: strobili), containing sporangiophores which develop large numbers of spores (or sporangia). In some species the strobilus develops at the top of the green or vegetative shoot.

Do strobili produce spores?

In contrast to Lycopodium, the sporophytes of all spike mosses (Selaginella) have sporophylls localized in strobili, and all species of Selaginella are heterosporous; that is, they produce spores of two sizes, the larger designated as megaspores and the smaller as microspores.

Do bryophytes produce flowers?

Bryophytes produce spores, rather than seeds, and have no flowers. ... They also have no flowers and produce spores. On the other hand ferns have well-developed, internal conducting systems that carry nutrients through the plant.

Where is Strobili found in Lycopodium?

Usually the leaves near the apical portion of the branches bear sporangia and are called sporophylls. Depending upon the species the sporophylls may or may not be differentiated from the ordinary leaves. These sporophylls usually form a condense structure at the apex of the branches which are known as strobili.
