Abstract. Introduction: Neither the prevalence of periapical radiolucency (PARL), a surrogate for disease, nor the prevalence of non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT) in elders have been subjected to systematic review.

What causes radiolucency in teeth?

Most of periapical radiolucencies are the result of inflammation such as pulpal disease due to infection or trauma. Not all radiolucencies near the tooth root are due to infection. Odontogenic or non odontogenic lesions can over impose the apices of teeth.

How do you treat condensing osteitis?

1. a root canal to help treat inflammation and any infections around the affected tooth.
2. antibiotics for any existing infections.
3. extraction for the affected tooth if permanent damage to the pulp is suspected.

How is apical periodontitis treated?

1. Root canal. In some cases, a root canal can minimize the inflammation of your gums by removing the bacteria and infected tissue from the tooth's pulp.
2. Apicoectomy. If the infection develops or continues after the root canal, you might require an apicoectomy.

What is radiolucency in dentistry?

It is common to see dark areas, known as radiolucencies, on a dental x-ray. A radiolucency often represents a void or an area of tissue that is less dense. Some of these radiolucencies are normal, such as those that represent openings in the jaw bone that allow certain nerves to enter and exit the jaw.

How is radiolucency treated?

To show that teeth with large radiolucencies can be treated/retreated endodontically. To demonstrate that large amount of bone can be regenerated without any bone grafts. That it takes a committed patient and clinician to see cases such as this through to successful treatment.

What is Corticated radiolucency?

Well-defined corticated radiolucencies are often odontogenic cysts and benign tumours as they are generally slow growing and allow the bone surrounding them to remodel. If they become infected cortication may be lost and they may appear to be less well defined.

What is the main cause of apical periodontitis?

Periapical periodontitis or apical periodontitis (AP) is an acute or chronic inflammatory lesion around the apex of a tooth root, most commonly caused by bacterial invasion of the pulp of the tooth.

Is apical periodontitis reversible?

Diagnosis: reversible pulpitis; normal apical tissues.

If the pulp is exposed, treatment would be non-surgical endodontic treatment followed by a permanent restoration such as a crown.

What is apical periodontitis?

Apical periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of periradicular tissues caused by aetiological agents of endodontic origin. Persistent apical periodontitis occurs when root canal treatment of apical periodontitis has not adequately eliminated intraradicular infection.

What is another name for condensing osteitis?

Condensing osteitis (focal sclerosing osteomyelitis, focal sclerosing osteitis) presents as a localized area of bone sclerosis that forms in response to a low-grade inflammatory stimulus.

How does condensing osteitis occur?

Condensing osteitis is a periapical inflammatory disease that results from a reaction to a dental related infection. This causes more bone production rather than bone destruction in the area (most common site is near the root apices of premolars and molars).

What causes alveolar osteitis?

Classically, this occurs as a postoperative complication of tooth extraction. Alveolar osteitis usually occurs where the blood clot fails to form or is lost from the socket (i.e., the defect left in the gum when a tooth is taken out).

What is irreversible Pulpitis?

Irreversible pulpitis occurs when inflammation and other symptoms, such as pain, are severe, and the pulp cannot be saved. Irreversible pulpitis may lead to a type of infection called periapical abscess. This infection develops at the root of the tooth, where it causes a pocket of pus to form.

What is Interradicular radiolucency?

For example, the part of the jawbone that can be seen between the teeth on an x-ray is described as “interradicular”, and the presence of a dark shadow on an x-ray is described as a “radiolucency”.

What is radiopacity Dental?

Objectives: Radiopacity of dental materials enables clinician to radiographically diagnose secondary caries and marginal defects which are usually located on the proximal gingival margin.

What is the difference between chronic and acute apical periodontitis?

Chronic periapical inflammation represents a 'balance' between the bacteria in the tooth and the host response. Once this 'balance' is disturbed, an acute inflammatory reaction will develop (1) with severe symptoms.

What is apical infection?

Acute apical abscess is the most common form of dental abscess and is caused by infection of the root canal of the tooth. It is usually localized intraorally, but in some cases the apical abscess may spread and result in severe complications or even mortality.

How do you know if you have apical periodontitis?

By far, most cases of apical periodontitis are asymptomatic. Pain, tenderness to biting pressure, percussion or palpation as well as swellings are typical clinical expres- sions of symptomatic apical periodontitis (Fig. 7.2a,b). The symptoms may vary from mild to severe.

Is apical periodontitis an infection?

Microbial cause – intraradicular infection

Post-treatment apical periodontitis is certainly a microbiological problem, because infection is present in virtually all cases associated with this condition, even in teeth with apparently adequate root canal treatments.

What is asymptomatic apical periodontitis?

Introduction. Asymptomatic apical periodontitis (AAP) is defined as a chronic inflammation and destruction of apical periodontium caused in response to bacterial infection of the root canal system, which appears as an apical radiolucent area, and does not produce clinical symptoms (1).

What is secondary apical periodontitis?

Secondary apical periodontitis results from a persistent infection of incorrectly treated root canals. The aim of this study was to characterize the microbiota present in primary and secondary intraradicular infections associated with apical periodontitis using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.

What is AOT in dentistry?

Abstract. Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is a well-recognised slow growing benign tumor derived from complex system of dental lamina or its remnants. This lesion is categorised into three variants of which the more common variant is follicular type which is often mistaken for dentigerous cyst.

What is mandibular radiolucency?

Objectives. Radiolucent mandibular lesions seen on panoramic radiographs develop from both odontogenic and non-odontogenic structures. They represent a broad spectrum of lesions with a varying degree of malignant potential.

What does periapical radiolucency mean?

Periapical radiolucency is the radiographic sign of inflammatory bone lesions around the apex of the tooth.
