Carposporophyte – formed by the union of haploid gametes in red algae; diploid (2n) stage of the life cycle that is carried by the haploid female gametophyte in the cystocarp; produces carpospores.

What is Tetraspores in biology?

Tetraspores are red algae spores produced by the tetrasporophytic (diploid) phase in the life history of algae in the Rhodophyta as a result of meiosis. The name is derived from the 4 spores that form after this meiosis, the division is of three kinds: cruciate, zonate and tetrahedral.

Why Polysiphonia is so called?

The genus Polysiphonia derives its name from the polysiphonous nature of its thallus. The central siphon is surrounded by 4–24 pericentral siphons. Polysiphonia is commonly found as an epiphyte on plants and lithophyte on rocks in brackish estuaries in the intertidal and sublittoral regions.

What is carpospore biology?

Definition. noun, plural: carpospores. The spore that develops from the conceptacles of a carposporophyte, characteristic of red algae.

How are carpospores formed?

A carpospore is a diploid spore produced by red algae. After fertilization, the alga's carpogonium subdivides into carpospores, and generally the largest type of spore (larger than bispores, which are larger again than tetraspores).

What is neutral spore?

Neutral spores are spores that are formed by mitotic cleavage without fertilization.

What is the type of life cycle in Polysiphonia?

In life cycle of Polysiphonia two diploid phases carposprophyte and tetra sporophyte alternate with one haploid gametophytic phase. The life cycle of Polysiphonia can be called as triphasic diplobiontic with isomorphic alternation of generation (Figs. 8, 9).

What is meant by Diplobiontic life cycle?

This is the life cycle in which the haploid phase is followed by two successive diploid generations. In plants like Polysiphonia the haploid plant (gametophyte) produces diploid zygote after gametic fusion. This is called the diplobiontic life cycle. ...

Which phase of the Polysiphonia life cycle is completely parasitic?

A complex series of fusions and developments follow as the diploid zygote develops to become the carposporophyte, this is a separate phase of the life-cycle and is entirely parasitic on the female, it is surrounded by the haploid pericarp of the parent female plant.

Which type of thallus is present in Batrachospermum?

The adult plant's thallus is soft, dense, and filamentous. It has a lot of branches and is gelatinous. A single row of broad cells makes up the central axis. Upon that axis, whorls of branches with limited growth evolve.

Why is Polysiphonia red?

Polysiphonia, a common genus of marine red algae, is red in color because of the pigment phycobilin, which masks the green color of the chlorophyll responsible for photosynthesis.

What is pericarp in red algae?

The cystocarp has an external layer called the pericarp that is formed from the female gametophyte's tissue (meaning it is haploid). Within the pericarp, the zygote has grown by mitosis into a carposporophyte making elongated carposporangia. Inside each carposporangium, diploid carpospores are produced by mitosis.

How is ploidy of Tetraspore in Polysiphonia?

Life Cycle of Polysiphonia:

Out of 4 tetraspores produced in tetrasporangia on diploid tetrasporophytic plant, two tetraspores develop haploid (gametophytic) male and other two haploid (gametophytic) female plants. ... Diploid carpospore on germination produces the diploid tetrasporophytic plant again.

How are tetraspores formed?

tetraspore Any one of four spores produced by meiosis in an independent diploid sporophyte (tetrasporophyte) in the life cycle of certain red algae. The tetraspores are produced within a tetrasporangium and germinate to produce the sexual haploid generation. The tetrasporophyte develops from a carpospore.

What is Polysiphonia Cystocarp?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A cystocarp is the fruiting structure produced in the red algae after fertilization, especially such a structure having a special protective envelope (as in Polysiphonia). The structure from which carpospores are released.

What is the meaning of Tetrasporophyte?

A tetrasporophyte is a certain type of sporophyte in red algae that exhibit isomorphic alternation of generation. The tetraspores (actually meiospores) produced by the tetrasporophyte were named before the demonstration of a sexual life cycle in the red algae.

What is the meaning of Polysiphonia?

: a large genus of red algae (family Rhodomelaceae) having usually a filamentous much-branched thallus variable in shape and size but in cross section showing a single axial cell surrounded by a sheath of tubular cells at least in the axis and main branches.

Is Polysiphonia Haplontic or Diplontic?

Answer: Haplo diplontic type of life cycle is exhibited by Ectocarpus, Polysiphonia and Kelps. Here, diploid saprophytic phase alternate with haploid gametophytic phase. In Fucus, the main plant body is saprophytic and it shows diplontic type of life cycle.

What is Haplobiontic and Diplobiontic life cycle?

Therefore, zygotic and gametic meiosis are collectively termed "haplobiontic" (single mitotic phase, not to be confused with haplontic). Sporic meiosis, on the other hand, has mitosis in two stages, both the diploid and haploid stages, termed "diplobiontic" (not to be confused with diplontic).

What is Diplobiontic?

Adjective. diplobiontic (not comparable) (botany) Describing a plant or fungus where both the haploid and diploid phases are represented by a multicellular phase. All embryophytes are diplobiontic.

What is a Gametic life cycle?

The gametic life cycle is the reproductive cycle found in animals and some protistans. The term gametic refers to the fact that gametes are the result of meiosis. During the gametic life cycle a reproductive cell produces haploid gametes (sex cells such as egg and sperm) that combine to produce a zygote.

Are all red algae Oogamous?

Type of the sexual reproduction found in red algae is only oogamous.

Is Polysiphonia unicellular or multicellular or Colonial?

Red algae (Polysiphonia) Red algae are mostly found in a marine environment. A number of species is unicellular, but most species are multicellular.

What are the different types of asexual spores seen in Polysiphonia?

(xi) The asexual reproduction takes place by mono-spores, neutral spores, carporpores or by tetra spores. (xii) The non-motile male gametes are called spermatia which are produced in spermatangia.
