Polycondensation is the term used to describe polymers formed as a result of reactions involving the condensation of organic materials in which small molecules are split out. ... Polymers typically formed by the polycondensation reaction mechanism include polyesters, nylons, and polyurethanes.

What is polycondensation process?

Polycondensation is the process of forming polymers by the combination of different monomers. The process is frequently accompanied by the release of various subsidiary low-molecular products (water, alcohol, salt). ... different functional groups which may react among each other and thus form polymers (amino acids);

What is polycondensation used for?

Polycondensation or step-growth polymerization is often used for the processing of adhesives, coatings, engineered plastics, fibers, films and many high-performance polymers.

What is meant by polymer meaning?

: a chemical compound or mixture of compounds formed by polymerization and consisting essentially of repeating structural units.

What is the meaning of polymer answer?

A polymer is any of a class of natural or synthetic substances composed of very large molecules, called macromolecules, which are multiples of simpler chemical units called monomers. Polymers make up many of the materials in living organisms and are the basis of many minerals and man-made materials.

What is polymer Class 8?

A polymer is a very big molecule formed by the combination of a large number of small molecules. The small molecules which join together to form a polymer is called monomer.

What is polymer and example?

Polymer is a substance made up of a large number of smaller molecules that link together to form larger molecules. An example of a synthetic polymer is plastic. An example of a natural polymer is rubber. ... Any of various chemical compounds made of smaller, identical molecules (called monomers) linked together.

What is polymers in materials science?

A polymer (the name means "many parts") is long chain molecule made up many repeating units, called monomers. Polymers can be natural (organic) or synthetic.

What is a monomer example?

Examples of the monomers are glucose, vinyl chloride, amino acids, and ethylene. Every monomer can link up to form a variety of polymers in different ways. For example, in glucose, glycosidic bonds that bind sugar monomers to form polymers such as glycogen, starch, and cellulose.

What is a monomer easy definition?

monomer, a molecule of any of a class of compounds, mostly organic, that can react with other molecules to form very large molecules, or polymers. The essential feature of a monomer is polyfunctionality, the capacity to form chemical bonds to at least two other monomer molecules.

What is polymerisation and polycondensation?

is that polycondensation is (chemistry) any condensation reaction, of a monomer having two functional groups, which leads to the formation of a polymer (a polycondensate) while polymerization is (chemistry) the chemical process, normally with the aid of a catalyst, to form a polymer by bonding together multiple ...

How is plastic made by polycondensation?

When Monomers with at least two functional groups react to form a polymer and produce a byproduct, it is called polycondensation. The polycondensation can work only properly if the byproduct is taken away continuously. Plastic: Polyester and Polyamides for example are produced by polycondensation. ...

What is interfacial polycondensation?

Interfacial polycondensation is a rapid, irreversible polymerization at the interface between water containing one difunctional intermediate and an inert immiscible organic solvent containing a complementary difunctional reactant.

What is monomeric unit?

A group of atoms, derived from a molecule of a given monomer (def. 1), that comprises any one species of constitutional unit of a polymer. From: monomeric unit in Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology » Subjects: Science and technology — Chemistry.

What is melt polycondensation?

Melt polycondensation is an important synthetic methodology that is largely used for the manufacture of thermoplastic engineering polymers such as polyesters, polyamides, and polycarbonates.

What is Polythene made of?

Polyethylene plastic: a Carbon-Hydrogen molecule. Polyethylene is made up of ethylene molecules with 2 carbon and 4 hydrogen atoms.

What is a monomer Class 8?

monomer: Small molecule that forms covalent bonds with other small molecules to produce a large molecule called a polymer. polymer: Large molecule that consists of many smaller molecules, called monomers, joined together by covalent bonds.

What is in a monomer?

Monomers are atoms or small molecules that bond together to form more complex structures such as polymers. There are four main types of monomer, including sugars, amino acids, fatty acids, and nucleotides.

What is a monomer in chemistry?

Monomers are small molecules, mostly organic, that can join with other similar molecules to form very large molecules, or polymers. All monomers have the capacity to form chemical bonds to at least two other monomer molecules.

Are polymers plastics?

Plastics are a group of materials, either synthetic or naturally occurring, that may be shaped when soft and then hardened to retain the given shape. Plastics are polymers. A polymer is a substance made of many repeating units.

What is polymer engineering?

Polymer engineering can best be described as the processes involved in converting polymers into useful products or items. It seeks to enhance and increase the best properties (both physical and chemical) of polymers and their resultant products like thermosets and thermoplastics.

What are the 4 types of polymers?

Synthetic polymers are human-made polymers. They can be classified into four main categories: thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, and synthetic fibers.

What are polymers 12?

A polymer is a large molecule of high molecular mass formed by the repetitive bonding of many small molecules called monomers. The process by which the monomers are transformed into polymers is called polymerisation. As polymers are single big size molecules, they are also called macromolecules. 2.

What is polymer in simple words?

A polymer is a molecule, made from joining together many small molecules called monomers. The word "polymer" can be broken down into "poly" (meaning "many" in Greek) and "mer" (meaning "unit"). ... Proteins have polypeptide molecules, which are natural polymers made from various amino acid monomer units.

What is polymer give two examples?

Examples of synthetic polymers include nylon, polyethylene, polyester, Teflon, and epoxy. Natural polymers occur in nature and can be extracted. They are often water-based. Examples of naturally occurring polymers are silk, wool, DNA, cellulose and proteins.
