(kō-ag″yŭ-lom″ĕt-ĕr) [ coagul(ate) + -meter] A device that measures the time it takes for a sample of blood to clot. It is often used in point-of-care testing, esp. in monitoring and adjusting warfarin dosages for anticoagulated patients.

What is a coagulometer?

A blood coagulometer is an analyzer used to test the coagulation efficiency of blood so as to diagnose and assess bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or to monitor patients who are taking anticoagulant medicines such as aspirin, heparin, or warfarin.

How does a Coagulometer work?

Its operation principle is based on the clotting method using a monitoring ball and magnetic transducers. The coagulometer consists of a recording unit and a unit of a thermostatic switch and a ball dosing apparatus. The device may operate off-line or may be connected to a personal computer.

How do you use a Coagulometer?

The central micro channel is designed to suck the blood in as soon as the drop touches the center of the plate. Approach your finger gently and carefully towards the plate to apply your blood drop onto it. It is important not to press your finger on the plate and to apply the blood drop in one single action.

What is aPTT used for?

The partial thromboplastin time (PTT; also known as activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT)) is a screening test that helps evaluate a person's ability to appropriately form blood clots. It measures the number of seconds it takes for a clot to form in a sample of blood after substances (reagents) are added.

What is fibrinogen?

A protein involved in forming blood clots in the body. It is made in the liver and forms fibrin. Fibrin is the main protein in a blood clot that helps stop bleeding and heal wounds.

What is normal INR value?

In healthy people an INR of 1.1 or below is considered normal. An INR range of 2.0 to 3.0 is generally an effective therapeutic range for people taking warfarin for disorders such as atrial fibrillation or a blood clot in the leg or lung.

How do I check my INR?

For INR testing, only a small amount of blood – one small to large blood drop – needs to be applied to a test strip. After a patient collects a blood sample and produces a result using the POC device, the patient calls the doctor's office or anticoagulation clinic with their results.

Is INR 4.5 high?

INR 4.5–10.0 Bleeding risk High.

What happens if my INR is low?

PT/INR too low- A low INR means indicates the patient's anticoagulation dose is too low and their blood is clotting too quickly putting them at risk for a blood clot. Symptoms of a low INR- Patients may not always know if their INR levels are too low until they experience symptoms of a clot, either DVT, PE or CVA.

What is fibrinogen in plasma?

Fibrinogen, or factor I, is a blood plasma protein that's made in the liver. Fibrinogen is one of 13 coagulation factors responsible for normal blood clotting.

What is fibrinogen quizlet?

Fibrinogen. plasma protein that is converted to fibrin in the clotting process. Found in the liver.

What type of protein is fibrinogen?

Fibrinogen is a thrombin-coagulable glycoprotein occurring in the blood of vertebrates. The primary structure of the alpha, beta, and gamma polypeptide chains of human fibrinogen is known from amino acid and nucleic acid sequencing. The intact molecule has a trinodular, dimeric structure and is functionally bivalent.

What causes high PTT?

Abnormal values

A longer-than-normal PTT or APTT can be caused by liver disease, kidney disease (such as nephrotic syndrome), or treatment with blood thinners. A longer-than-normal PTT may be caused by conditions such as antiphospholipid antibody syndrome or lupus anticoagulant syndrome.

What happens if PTT is high?

An abnormal (too long) PTT result may also be due to: Bleeding disorders , a group of conditions in which there is a problem with the body's blood clotting process. Disorder in which the proteins that control blood clotting become over active ( disseminated intravascular coagulation ) Liver disease.

What causes high INR?

A high INR level can happen when you take warfarin (Coumadin). Warfarin helps prevent blood clots. To do this, it slows the amount of time it takes for your blood to clot. This raises your INR level.

What is the function of fibrinogen quizlet?

Fibrinogen is the plasma protein that functions in blood clotting. Fibrinogen is an inactive form of the protein fibrin, which makes up a fibrous network in a mature blood clot.

Why is fibrinogen converted to fibrin?

When blood clotting is activated, fibrinogen circulating in the blood is converted to fibrin, which in turn helps to form a stable blood clot at the site of vascular disruption. Coagulation inhibitor proteins help to prevent abnormal coagulation (hypercoagulability) and to resolve clots after they are formed.

Which converts fibrinogen to fibrin?

Thrombin is a naturally occurring enzyme that converts fibrinogen into fibrin, which is an integral step in clot formation. In vivo thrombin is formed from prothrombin as a result of activation of both the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of the coagulation cascade.

What is plasma without fibrinogen?

Blood serum is blood plasma without fibrinogen or the other clotting factors (that is, whole blood minus both the cells and the clotting factors).

How is Dysfibrinogenemia diagnosed?

Traditionally, dysfibrinogenemia is diagnosed by abnormal tests of fibrin clot formation; the thrombin time and reptilase time are the screening tests, and the fibrinogen clotting activity-antigen ratio is the confirmatory test.

Is fibrinogen a plasma protein?

Fibrinogen is the major plasma protein coagulation factor. Low plasma fibrinogen concentrations are therefore associated with an increased risk of bleeding due to impaired primary and secondary haemostasis.

What foods can increase your INR?

The most common foods that have high vitamin K are green leafy vegetables such as kale, collard greens, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, and lettuce. Other foods that could affect warfarin may include beef liver or other animal liver products.

How do I raise my INR?

A nice "rule of thumb" for dose adjustments near the target range (generally works for INRs from the high 1s to low 4s): If you want to change the INR by 0.5-1 unit, increase or decrease the weekly dose by a daily dose. Example: Your patient has been taking warfarin 5mg daily for more than 2 weeks and INR is 1.8.
