A nebula is an enormous cloud of dust and gas occupying the space between stars and acting as a nursery for new stars. ... For example, in the Carina Nebula, hot, young stars erode and sculpt the clouds into this fantasy landscape by sending out thick stellar winds and scorching ultraviolet radiation.

What is the purpose of a nebula?

Planetary nebulae are important objects in astronomy because they play a crucial role in the chemical evolution of the galaxy, returning material to the interstellar medium which has been enriched in heavy elements and other products of nucleosynthesis (such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and calcium).

How do nebula affect us?

Explanation: The closest nebula is the Orion Nebula at more than 1300 light years from Earth. It is so remote that nothing that happens there can influence the Earth. The only influence is to have beautiful colors and shapes and to let us dream one day to go there and explore them.

Do nebulae form galaxies?

A nebula is a cloud of dust and gas, usually tens to hundreds of light years across. ... Nebulae are one of the many things that galaxies are made of, along with stars, black holes, cosmic dust, dark matter and much more.

Why do nebulae glow?

Within this type of nebula, a star energizes the atoms in the cloud with ultraviolet radiation. As these atoms fall back to lower energy states, they emit radiation. The process is similar to that of a neon light. This causes the nebula to glow.

Can you breathe in a nebula?

No. There would be nowhere near enough oxygen to breathe. A nebula is extremely thin. It only looks thick on a photograph because you are looking through several light years of it.

Why do nebulas shrink?

As a ball of dust and gas contracts under its own gravity, it begins to shrink and its core begins collapsing faster and faster. This causes the core to heat up and to rotate. ... Even still, these objects may glow dimly because the force of gravity causes them to continue shrinking, which releases energy in the process.

What is Quasar short for?

Definition: Quasi Stellar radio sources, abbreviated QUASARS, are the most dynamic and far-off objects in a collective known as active galactic nuclei (AGN).

What is a dying star called?

Some types of stars expire with titanic explosions, called supernovae. When a star like the Sun dies, it casts its outer layers into space, leaving its hot, dense core to cool over the eons. ... A supernova can shine as brightly as an entire galaxy of billions of "normal" stars.

Do nebulae have planets?

The term "planetary nebula" is a misnomer because they are unrelated to planets. The term originates from the planet-like round shape of these nebulae observed by astronomers through early telescopes. ... All planetary nebulae form at the end of the life of a star of intermediate mass, about 1-8 solar masses.

Is Earth inside a nebula?

The Earth was formed from the nebula that produced the Solar System. It is almost universally accepted that the Sun, the planets and their satellites, the asteroids, and the comets of the Oort 'cloud' grew from a cloud of gas and dust that contracted under its own gravity.

What do nebulae really look like?

Nebulae are astoundingly large accumulations of dust and gas, sometimes spanning tens to thousands of light-years across. Moreover, most of Hubble's nebulae images depict a saturated collection of colorful clouds.

Is nebula A celestial object?

An astronomical object or celestial object is a naturally occurring physical entity, association, or structure that exists in the observable universe. ... Examples of astronomical objects include planetary systems, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies, while asteroids, moons, planets, and stars are astronomical bodies.

Is nebula free with Curiositystream?

Do I get access to Nebula? Unfortunately, this deal is only for new, paying Curiosity Stream subscribers who sign up through a qualifying YouTube promotion.

Why are nebulae called star nurseries?

How Do Stars Form in Nebulas? Stars are born in clouds of gas and dust. One such stellar nursery is the Orion Nebula, an enormous cloud of gas and dust many light-years across. Turbulence from deep within these clouds creates high density regions called knots.

Are stars bigger than nebula?

From largest to smallest they are: Universe, galaxy, solar system, star, planet, moon and asteroid.

What would happen if the sun exploded?

The Sun will get hotter and brighter, and it will start to expand. During this process, it will lose its outer layers to the cosmos, leading to the creation of other stars and planets in the same way that the violent burst of the Big Bang created Earth.

Can a star explode?

Learn more about what happens when stars explode. Some stars burn out instead of fading. These stars end their evolutions in massive cosmic explosions known as supernovae. When supernovae explode, they jettison matter into space at some 9,000 to 25,000 miles (15,000 to 40,000 kilometers) per second.

How black holes are formed?

How Do Black Holes Form? Primordial black holes are thought to have formed in the early universe, soon after the big bang. Stellar black holes form when the center of a very massive star collapses in upon itself. This collapse also causes a supernova, or an exploding star, that blasts part of the star into space.

What is a white black hole?

White holes were long thought to be a figment of general relativity born from the same equations as their collapsed star brethren, black holes. ... Physicists describe a white hole as a black hole's "time reversal," a video of a black hole played backwards, much as a bouncing ball is the time reversal of a falling ball.

Does black hole have gravity?

Black holes are points in space that are so dense they create deep gravity sinks. Beyond a certain region, not even light can escape the powerful tug of a black hole's gravity.

Is the center of a galaxy a black hole?

Observational evidence indicates that almost every large galaxy has a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center. The Milky Way has a supermassive black hole in its Galactic Center, which corresponds to the location of Sagittarius A*.

What would ignite stars?

Gravity causes gas to compress and causes particles to move at high speed. So Gravity causes friction between the gas particles, so the star ignites.

What is a newborn star called?

Very young stars, also called protostars, form in clouds of gas and dust in space. The first step in the formation of a star is when these dense clouds collapse due to gravity. As the cloud collapses, it begins to spin -- forming a flattened disk around the protostar.

Why do nebulas spin faster?

Why does a nebula spin faster as it contracts? A nebula spins faster as it contracts because of the conservation of angular momentum.
