A velocity stack', 'trumpet, or air horn, is a trumpet-shaped device of differing lengths which is fitted to the air entry of an engine's intake system, carburetor or fuel injection. It is unrelated to the noise maker or signaling air horn.

Does velocity stacks increase horsepower?

According to dsmtuners.com, They swapped a 4-inch turbo intake with a Velocity stack on one of their customer cars that made 490 wheel horsepower. After a dyno run the car made 517 WHP, that's an improvement of close to 31 bhp with no real changes!

Are velocity stacks bad for your engine?

Re: For people that say velocity stacks are bad for your engine.... The real danger is not that the dirt/dust gets into your oil. The problem is getting it into your combustion chamber where it will wear your rings out prematurely.

What is engine velocity stack?

Velocity stacks are also called intake trumpets, which gives you a bit better idea what they are. They're little trumpet-shaped air intakes for your engine. The trumpet shape smooths the flow of air into the intake, allowing the most air possible to flow through the given volume of the intake.

What do velocity stacks do for a motorcycle?

Think of a velocity stack as the flute of a trumpet. It attaches to the intake side of the carb or throttle body and maximizes Bernoulli's principle to increase air speed (velocity) through the venturi.

Velocity Stacks - What they do and how to make them... a.k.a. Air horns, ram pipes, air trumpets....

Do velocity stacks need filters?

Re: Velocity Stacks & filtering? A filter in a stack will seriously upset airflow, and defeats the purpose of a stack. In fact, those grills to stop the rabbits getting sucked into your carbs are already a very bad idea on velocity stacks.

What is a carburetor trumpet?

A velocity stack', 'trumpet, or air horn, is a trumpet-shaped device of differing lengths which is fitted to the air entry of an engine's intake system, carburetor or fuel injection.

Is a velocity stack safe?

The velocity stack won't hurt your engine unless you run it without a filter as you then let in contaminants that can accelerate internal wear. Eventually you shorten the life of your engine.

How do you calculate velocity stack?

Once you have found the most practical dimensions, all you do is measure the current intake runner length and subtract this from the length advised in the calculator - the bit left over is the length of the velocity stack.

How do you increase air intake velocity?

One way to increase the air velocity is to use a smaller diameter intake runner. Since roughly the same volume of air enters the cylinder each cycle, if you pump that air through a smaller diameter pipe it will have to go faster.

What is a short ram air intake?

The short ram air intake is a form of aftermarket air intake for automobiles with internal combustion engines. It replaces the OEM air intake with a short metal pipe and a conical air filter inside the engine bay. ... To counter intake heat problems, many short ram intakes include some form of heat shield.

What is the throttle body?

In a traditional spark ignition gasoline engine, the throttle body is the part of the air intake system that controls the amount of air that flows into an engine's combustion chamber. It consists of a housing unit that contains a throttle plate (butterfly valve) that rotates on a shaft.

What does a cone filter do?

A cone filter is mainly used in performance vehicles. It is part of an induction kit that is equipped with the pipework. It needs to be installed somewhere where it can suck in cold air. It is a cone shaped device that can be found close to the air flow in the front of the car.

What is velocity stack filter?

FILTER ADAPTER; 4-1/2" VELOCITY STACK. Spectre's air filter inlet adapters and velocity stacks are designed to allow you to attach a larger 6 inch diameter flange air filter onto a smaller diameter air intake tube. The velocity stacks are available with different neck sizes, to match 2.5 inch to 4.5 inch tubes.

What does a carburetor air horn do?

Air horns do two things: 1. smooth air flow so the turbulence caused by the sharp edge of the carb throat (or injection throat) has less effect. Large entry diameter of horns and smooth radius helps here, long or short.

Is velocity a speed?

Speed is the time rate at which an object is moving along a path, while velocity is the rate and direction of an object's movement. ... For example, 50 km/hr (31 mph) describes the speed at which a car is traveling along a road, while 50 km/hr west describes the velocity at which it is traveling.

What is stack injection?

V8 Stack Injection describes any ITB or multi-throttle intake system, which not only look and sound great, but also offer the very best in engine response. ... By opting for a V8 Stack Injection System, you can transform your engine into an absolute beast!

Do velocity stacks work on Turbo?

yes they do work however you will see larger results with larger turbo's. on one of our cusotmers cars, we tuned his car to 490whp on his 2.0 setup. while on the dyno, we swapped in a same 4" turbo intake but with a velocity stack and it jumped to 517whp with no real changes.

How do individual throttle bodies work?

With individual throttle bodies (ITBs), each cylinder gets its own butterfly valve regulating air intake, rather than all cylinders sharing one valve. When you apply throttle to an engine with a single throttle body, air has to travel further to reach each cylinder, slowing response somewhat.

What do trumpets do for a car?

It was found that shorter intake trumpets have an influence on a higher engine-rated power when operating at higher engine rotational speeds. Longer trumpets increase engine-rated torque at lower engine rotational speeds but decrease engine power at higher speeds.

How much HP does a throttle body add?

In addition to increasing acceleration performance, larger throttle bodies can also boost overall horsepower. This gives the engine increased power and torque, which may be helpful in situations such as towing. Commonly, adding an aftermarket throttle body can increase engine power by 15 hp to 25 hp.

Why does the throttle body get dirty?

Here's how the throttle body gets dirty. When an engine shuts down, hot exhaust gases and unburned fuel float to the top of the engine. As the vapors bake from the engine heat, they form black sooty carbon deposits inside the throttle body. Follow the plastic duct from the air filter housing up to the throttle body.
