Ozone and nitric oxide (NO) can irritate the nose and throat and their high concentration causes a headache, chest pain, dryness of the throat, cough and difficulty in breathing. Photochemical smog leads to cracking of rubber and extensive damage to plant life.

What are the causes and effects of photochemical smog?

Photochemical smog happens when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react together in the presence of sunlight as a catalyst and form ozone at lower levels. ... The acidic nature of the smog can also cause environmental damage and structural decay in dwellings.

What are the effects of smog on the environment?

Ozone can damage lung tissue, and it is especially dangerous to people with respiratory illnesses like asthma. Ozone can also cause itchy, burning eyes. Smog is unhealthy to humans and animals, and it can kill plants. Smog is also ugly.

What are the main effects of smog?

Smog can irritate the eyes and throat and also damage the lungs, especially those of children, senior citizens, and people who work or exercise outdoors. It's even worse for people who have asthma or allergies: these extra pollutants can intensify their symptoms and trigger asthma attacks.

What is photochemical smog and what are its effects Class 9?

Photochemical smog refers to a type of smog which is formed when the ultraviolet light from the sun reacts with nitrogen oxides present in the atmosphere. This smog can cause a lot of adverse effects on humans and other living organisms.

Photochemical Smog (Animation)

What are the harmful effects of photochemical smog mention any two?

Both PAN and ozone are eye irritants, while nitric oxide (formed from NO₂) causes nose and throat irritation. At higher concentrations, photochemical smog leads to chest pain, headaches, throat dryness, and various respiratory ailments.

What are the harmful effect of photochemical smog and write a note on acid rain?

The harmful effects of smog are: Ozone, peroxyacyl nitrates and PAN occur in the eyes and into the respiratory system. Smog has oxidizing nature. Oxygen contains metals like nitrogen dioxide and ozone causing corrosion of metals, stone, rubber and painted surfaces.

What is a photochemical smog?

Photochemical smog is a mixture of pollutants that are formed when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) react to sunlight, creating a brown haze above cities. It tends to occur more often in summer, because that is when we have the most sunlight.

What is smog causes and effects?

Smog refers to a noxious mixture of gases and particles that often appears as a haze in the air. It has been linked to a number of adverse effects on health and the environment. The two primary pollutants in smog are ground-level ozone ( O₃ ) and particulate matter ( PM ).

What are the 10 effects of pollution?

• Environment Degradation. The environment is the first casualty for the increase in pollution weather in air or water. ...
• Human Health. ...
• Global Warming. ...
• Ozone Layer Depletion. ...
• Infertile Land.

What is the difference between smog and photochemical smog?

Sulfurous smog, also known as London smog, develops due to high concentration of sulfur oxides in the air. ... Photochemical smog is produced when sunlight reacts with oxides of nitrogen and at least one volatile organic compound (VOC) in the atmosphere.

What are the harmful effects of smog Class 8?

The carbon particles, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide of smoke combine with the condensed water vapour called fog to form smog. Smog causes cough and aggravates (makes worse) asthma and other lung diseases, especially in children.

What is smog its harmful effects Class 8?

What are its harmful effects? Solution: A thick fog- like layer in the atmosphere which is made up of smoke is called smog. ... Smog causes respiratory problems like cough and asthma and also accidents due to the invisible road due to smog.

What is photochemical effect?

Definition. The result or consequence of a chemical reaction caused by light or ultraviolet radiation.

What is smog state its damaging effects?

Damaging effect: Smog is noxious and irritating. It reduces visibility, induces respiratory troubles and can cause death by suffocation. Photochemical smog: Damages the tissues of certain plants and even decreases the yield of citrus fruits and grapes.

What is greenhouse effect How is smog formed?

Smog is formed by the combination of smoke and fog. It can be caused both by natural means and man-made activities. In general, smog is generally formed by the accumulation of more greenhouse gases including nitrogen and sulfur oxides.

What effect does smog have on our cities?

Smog is a problem in a number of cities and continues to harm human health. Ground-level ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide carbon monoxide are especially harmful for senior citizens, children, and people with heart and lung conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma.

What environmental factors affect the formation of photochemical smog?

In addition, climatic factors such as rainfall, wind, daily temperature range, and topography have a key role in forming and continuing photochemical smog (9). Smog forming sources, ozone, air pollution, public health, air pollution in Canada and international efforts for decreasing air pollution have been considered.

Does photochemical smog contain ozone?

Photochemical smog is a brownish-gray haze caused by the action of solar ultraviolet radiation on atmosphere polluted with hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen. It contains anthropogenic air pollutants, mainly ozone, nitric acid, and organic compounds, which are trapped near the ground by temperature inversion.

How is ozone formed in photochemical smog?

VOCs + NOx = Ozone. These volatile organic compounds react to form ozone only in the presence of sunlight. ... This blue light is producing the UV light that is required to create ozone. And this ozone again reacts with volatile organic compounds to produce photochemical smog.

What are the negative environmental and health impacts of smog?

Smog can irritate your eyes, nose and throat. Or it can worsen existing heart and lung problems or perhaps cause lung cancer with regular long-term exposure. It also results in early death. ... The people most at risk are those who suffer from heart and lung problems.

What is the harmful effect?

Something that is harmful has a bad effect on something else, especially on a person's health.

What are the harmful effects of photochemical smog how can they be Minimised?

(i) The most straight forward way is to minimize the release of oxides of nitrogen and hydrocarbons to the atmosphere. Usually catalytic converters are used in automobiles which convert harmful gases into harmless gases and thus prevent the release of nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons to the atmosphere.

What is smog give two harmful effects of smog?

Smog can cause or aggravate health problems such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other respiratory problems as well as eye irritation and reduced resistance to colds and lung infections. The ozone in smog also inhibits plant growth and can cause widespread damage to crops and forests.
