The main causes of deforestation in Ethiopia are the high population growth, low agricultural productivity, the poor economic performance of the country, shifting agriculture, livestock production and fuel in drier areas.

What are the main causes of deforestation in Ethiopia?

The main causes of deforestation in Ethiopia are shifting agriculture, livestock production and fuel in drier areas. Deforestation is the process of removing the forest ecosystem by cutting the trees and changing the shape of the land to suit different uses.

What are the causes of disappearing forest?

The most common pressures causing deforestation and severe forest degradation are agriculture, unsustainable forest management, mining, infrastructure projects and increased fire incidence and intensity.

What are the major cause of soil erosion in Ethiopia?

Rapid population growth, cultivation on steep slopes, clearing of vegetation, and overgrazing are the main factors that accelerate soil erosion in Ethiopia. ... This indicates that soil erosion is a very serous threat to food security of people and requires urgent management intervention.

What are the major problems of natural resource management in Ethiopia?

There exist widespread problem related to intensive cultivation, overgrazing, deforestation, soil erosion, water scarcity, livestock fodder, and fuelwood crisis (Hurni et al.

What are the causes effects and solutions of natural resource degradation in Ethiopia?

The major causes of land degradation in Ethiopia are the rapid population increase, severe soil loss, deforestation, low vegetative cover and unbalanced crop and livestock production. Inappropriate land-use systems and land-tenure policies enhance desertification and loss of agrobiodiversity.

What are the causes of depletion of resources?

• Overpopulation. ...
• Overconsumption and waste. ...
• Deforestation and the Destruction of Ecosystems leading to loss of biodiversity.
• Mining of Minerals and Oil.
• Technological and Industrial Development.
• Erosion.
• Pollution and Contamination of resources.

What are the main causes for the degradation of natural vegetation?

Destruction of natural vegetation is primarily caused by deforestation. Other major causes are wildfire and overexploitation. Deforestation not only occurs as a result of firewood extraction by the local population but also as a result of the creation of arable as well as pastoral land.

What is the cause and consequence of soil degradation in Ethiopia?

The results from different literatures indicate that the major factors that cause land degradation in Ethiopia are: clearing woodland for agriculture , repeated cultivation, removal of residuals and dungs, single cropping, extraction of wood, , population growth, deforestation, soil erosion, low technology, inadequate ...

What are the natural causes of soil erosion?

Running water is the leading cause of soil erosion, because water is abundant and has a lot of power. Wind is also a leading cause of soil erosion because wind can pick up soil and blow it far away. Activities that remove vegetation, disturb the ground, or allow the ground to dry are activities that increase erosion.

What are the causes and consequences of forest degradation?

Deforestation is one of the major causes to the environmental degradation which is affected by the agents like small farmers, ranches, loggers and plantation companies. There is a broad consensus that expansion of cropped areas and pastures are a major source of deforestation.

What are the 5 causes of deforestation?

• Industrial Agriculture. Look no further than your dinner plate, because industrial agriculture accounts for around 85% of deforestation worldwide. ...
• Timber Logging. ...
• Mining. ...
• Expansion and Infrastructure. ...
• Climate Change.

What are the causes and effects of deforestation?

The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people.

How is deforestation affecting Ethiopia?

Deforestation in Ethiopia takes place in both forests and farm woodlands and is recognized as the most severe environmental problem there. Deforestation and land degradation are impairing the capacity of forests and the land to contribute to food security and to provide other benefits such as fuel wood and fodder.

What are the causes of deforestation PDF?

The most important direct causes of deforestation include logging, the conversion of forested lands for agriculture and cattle-raising, urbanization, mining and oil exploitation, acid rain and fire. In other countries, clear-cut logging practices have been the main reason for forest loss.

Are there forests in Ethiopia?

Today, only about 5% of Ethiopia is covered in forest, compared to around 45% about a century ago. Although it's mostly the trees between the forests that have disappeared, the sacred forests are indirectly affected, too.

What are the causes of natural vegetation and wildlife degradation?

Destruction of natural vegetation is primarily caused by deforestation. Other major causes are wildfire and overexploitation. Deforestation not only occurs as a result of firewood extraction by the local population but also as a result of the creation of arable as well as pastoral land.

What causes land degradation?

Land degradation is caused by multiple forces, including extreme weather conditions, particularly drought. It is also caused by human activities that pollute or degrade the quality of soils and land utility. ... Desertification is a form of land degradation by which fertile land becomes desert.

What are the major problems of soil in Ethiopia?

Soil erosion is a serious problem in Ethiopia. Particularly in the northern provinces, which have been settled with sedentary agriculture for millennia, population density has caused major damage to the soil's physical base, to its organic and chemical nutrients, and to the natural vegetation cover.

What are the causes of watershed deterioration?

Watershed degradation results from the interaction of physiographic features, climate and poor land use (indiscriminate deforestation, inappropriate cultivation, disturbance of soils and slopes by mining, the movement of animals, road construction, and badly controlled diversion, storage, transportation and use of ...

What are the causes of destruction of natural resources?

• Overpopulation. The total global population is more than seven billion people. ...
• Poor Farming Practices. ...
• Logging. ...
• Overconsumption of Natural Resources. ...
• Pollution. ...
• Industrial and Technological Development.

What are the effects of shortage of natural resources?

Consequences: Soil erosion, Global Warming caused by the rise of greenhouse gases- Extinction of species and loss of biodiversity. Flooding and drought.

What is degradation of natural resources?

Resource degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil, the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife. It is defined as any change or disturbance to the environment that is perceived to be deleterious or undesirable.

What is the main cause of land degradation in Africa?

Agriculture and deforestation are dominant drivers of land degradation, especially through inefficient use of agricultural resources, soil loss in cultivated lands, and expansion of cultivated land.

What is degradation of natural vegetation?

While there was no internationally accepted definition of vegetation degradation, it can generally. be defined as “the decline process of potential vegetation production in landscape variability under. natural or artificial disturbances” [1]. Compared to intact plants, degraded vegetation was often lower.
