The tropopause is the atmospheric boundary that demarcates the troposphere from the stratosphere; which are two of the five layers of the atmosphere of Earth.

What happens at the tropopause?

The troposphere is the region where nearly all water vapour exists and essentially all weather occurs. …of the troposphere, called the tropopause, corresponds to the level in which the pattern of decreasing temperature with height ceases. It is replaced by a layer that is essentially isothermal (of equal temperature).

What means tropopause?

tropopause. / (ˈtrɒpəˌpɔːz) / noun. meteorol the plane of discontinuity between the troposphere and the stratosphere, characterized by a sharp change in the lapse rate and varying in altitude from about 18 km (11 miles) above the equator to 6 km (4 miles) at the Poles.

Why is there a tropopause?

The tropopause minimum acts as a barrier^ between the troposphere and stratosphere because mixing and heat transport by convection can only occur when temperature decreases with height. The troposphere - with convection allowed - is turbulent and well mixed.

Where is tropopause located?

The tropopause occurs at approximately 20,000 feet over the poles and at approximately 60,000 feet above the equator. The International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) assumes that the average height of the tropopause is 36,000 feet.

What is the pressure of the tropopause?

The tropopause has an average height of about 10 km (it is higher in equatorial regions and lower in polar regions). This height corresponds to about 7 miles, or at approximately the 200 mb (20.0 kPa) pressure level.

Do planes fly in the tropopause?

Passengers planes mostly fly in the lower stratosphere layer and also in the top level of tropopause because these are less turbulent layers and provide a smoother ride. The layer that exists between the troposphere and the stratosphere is termed as the tropopause.

Why does weather stop at the tropopause?

Rising from the planetary surface of the Earth, the tropopause is the atmospheric level where the air ceases to become cool with increased altitude, and becomes dry, devoid of water vapor.

Why is the tropopause higher at the equator?

The troposphere is thicker over the equator than the poles because the equator is warmer. Heat differential on the planet's surface causes convection currents to flow from the equator to the poles. ... Thus the simple reason is thermal expansion of the atmosphere at the equator and thermal contraction near the poles.

Why do clouds stop at the tropopause?

Surface air is warmed by the Sun-heated ground surface and rises; if sufficient atmospheric moisture is present, water droplets will condense as the air mass encounters cooler air at higher altitudes. ... The tropopause halts further upward motion of the cloud mass.

Why is the tropopause higher over tropical areas?

This site says that the tropopause is at a higher altitude at the equator because: Gravitational force from a point is higher closer to it and reduces with increasing distance from it. Because the Earth itself is broader at equator, the equator experiences less gravity allowing air to reach bigger heights.

What is troposphere and tropopause?

The troposphere is the lowest and thickest layer of the atmosphere. ... The tropopause is the boundary layer between the troposphere and the stratosphere . The thickness of the troposphere depends upon a number of atmospheric variables at latitude .

How thick is tropopause?

The troposphere is between 5 and 9 miles (8 and 14 kilometers) thick depending on where you are on Earth. It's thinnest at the North and South Pole. This layer has the air we breathe and the clouds in the sky. The air is densest in this lowest layer.

What crucial protective function does tropopause serve?

The tropopause height is higher in summer and lower in winter. The height is also higher at the equator and lower at higher latitudes. The tropopause acts as a barrier to resist the exchange of air between the troposphere and the stratosphere.

What happens to the temperature at the tropopause?

As the density of the gases in this layer decrease with height, the air becomes thinner. Therefore, the temperature in the troposphere also decreases with height in response. As one climbs higher, the temperature drops from an average around 62°F (17°C) to -60°F (-51°C) at the tropopause.

Why is temperature constant at tropopause?

tropopause The boundary separating a lower layer of the atmosphere (troposphere), in which air temperature generally decreases with height, from the layer above (stratosphere), in which temperature remains constant or increases with height.

What is the ISA tropopause temperature?

The temperature remains at a constant value of -56.5°C (216.65°K) from the tropopause up to 20,000 m (65,600 ft). This ISA model is used as a reference to compare real atmospheric conditions and the corresponding engine/aircraft performance.

What is the most likely temperature at the tropical tropopause?

Tropical Regions. The tropical tropopause (located at approximately 380 K) is located in the upwards branch of the Brewer–Dobson circulation (Figure 1) at a pressure of approximately 100 hPa and a temperature of approximately −70 to −80°C.

Do we live in thermosphere?

Humans live in the lowest layer called the troposphere. It is also the layer where all weather conditions occur. The layers above it are called the stratosphere, the mesosphere, and the thermosphere.

How important is the tropopause when considering climate on the earth?

The study of the troposphere is very important because we breathe the air in this layer of air. ... Tropospheric processes, such as the water or hydrologic cycle (the formation of clouds and rain) and the greenhouse effect, have a great influence on meteorology and the climate.

Can you breathe at 35000 feet?

Whether you are flying aboard a small Cessna or a jumbo-sized Airbus A380, you can breathe freely inside the cabin without wearing a mask or respirator. Even at a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet, you shouldn't have trouble breathing.

Why do passenger planes fly close to the tropopause?

You'll probably discover that it flies somewhere in the troposphere, which is important for two reasons: the air is thin enough to minimize drag, yet it's also thick enough to produce an adequate amount of lift. For these reasons, commercial jets almost always fly in the troposphere.

Do pilots sleep while flying?

Do pilots sleep on their job? Yes, they do. And however alarming it may seem, they are actually encouraged to do so. It's good to take a short nap during flights, but there are strict rules that control this practice.

Which is called the tropopause limit?

The tropopause is traditionally defined by meteorologists as the lowest level at which the rate of decrease of temperature with respect to height (normally about 6 K km⁻¹ in the troposphere) decreases to 2 K km⁻¹, and the average from this level to any level within the next 2 km does not exceed 2 K km⁻¹.

What happens to pressure in the tropopause?

Chuck W. Atmospheric pressure in the troposphere drops by about 1 inch of mercury for every thousand feet of altitude above sea level. Gravity of the earth holds our atmosphere close to the surface, so the density (and pressure) of air gets gradually lower as you go to higher altitude.
