The biceps or biceps brachii (Latin: musculus biceps brachii, "two-headed muscle of the arm") is a large muscle that lies on the front of the upper arm between the shoulder and the elbow. Both heads of the muscle arise on the scapula and join to form a single muscle belly which is attached to the upper forearm.

What is a biceps brachii muscle definition?

The Biceps brachii (Biceps; Biceps flexor cubiti) is a long fusiform muscle, placed on the front of the arm, and arising by two heads, from which circumstance it has received its name. The short head arises by a thick flattened tendon from the apex of the coracoid process, in common with the Coracobrachialis.

What is the origin and insertion of biceps brachii?

The biceps brachii muscle is one of the chief muscles of the arm. The origin at the scapula and the insertion into the radius of the biceps brachii means it can act on both the shoulder joint and the elbow joint, which is why this muscle participates in a few movements of the arm.

What does brachii mean?

a Latin word meaning "of the arm," used in medical names and descriptions.

How was the biceps brachii named?

The biceps brachii muscle is the one that gave all muscles their name: it comes from the Latin musculus, "little mouse", because the appearance of the flexed biceps resembles the back of a mouse. The same phenomenon occurred in Greek, in which μῦς, mȳs, means both "mouse" and "muscle".

Is the biceps brachii Biarticular?

The biceps brachii is a bi-articular muscle affecting motion at the shoulder and elbow. ... The results indicated that both shoulder and elbow joint angles influence the shoulder joint elevation moment produced by the biceps brachii.

Where is the bicep brachii?

The biceps brachii (commonly know as the biceps) locates in the anterior compartment of the arm. It works across three joints, and is able to generate movements in glenohumeral, elbow and radio-ulnar joints.

Is the biceps brachii anterior or posterior?

The biceps brachii is on the anterior side of the humerus and is the prime mover (agonist) responsible for flexing the forearm. It has two origins (hence the “biceps” part of its name), both of which attach to the scapula bone.

What is the tricep brachii?

The triceps brachii is the muscle that runs down the back of the humerus, which is the long bone of the upper arm, and ends at the top of the ulna, which is the long bone of the forearm.

What is the origin of the brachialis?

The brachialis originates from the anterior surface of the distal half of the humerus, near the insertion of the deltoid muscle, which it embraces by two angular processes. Its origin extends below to within 2.5 cm of the margin of the articular surface of the humerus at the elbow joint.

How many origin does biceps have?

The biceps brachii has two heads, or origins, which is where the 'bi' in biceps comes from. Both heads originate on the scapula, which is the technical name for the shoulder blade.

Is biceps brachii a skeletal muscle?

The biceps brachii is a skeletal muscle, and as such is an organ made mostly of skeletal muscle and connective tissues.

Is the biceps brachii a Bipennate muscle?

The biceps tendon is a bipennate muscle comprising a short and a long head. The long head originates from the supraglenoid tubercle and the short head from the coracoid process.

Which nerve Innervates the biceps brachii?

The biceps brachii muscle receives its innervation from the C5 and C6 fibers of the musculocutaneous nerve. The brachialis muscle originates on the distal portion of the anterior humerus, and inserts on both the coronoid process and tuberosity of the ulna.

Is the biceps brachii an extensor or a flexor?

Contracting your biceps exhibits flexion, i.e. it brings your forearm closer to your upper arm and decreasing the angle between the two. So, your biceps is described as a "flexor" muscle.

What are the 2 bicep muscles?

In human beings, there are the biceps brachii and biceps femoris. The biceps brachii is a prominent muscle on the front side of the upper arm.

What is the insertion of the biceps Brachii quizlet?

inferior fibers; depress scapula. Deltoid origin. lateral third of clavicle; acromion process; spine of scapula. deltoid insertion. deltoid tuberosity of humerus.

Is the biceps brachii long head Biarticular?

Abstract. The triceps brachii (TB), the sole muscle of the posterior humerus, acts an extensor of the elbow and shoulder. As a biarticular muscle, the angles of the elbow and shoulder influence its' ability to generate joint moments.

Is the Brachialis Biarticular?

The pronator quadratus is the deepest muscle of the distal forearm. p. 69-70 8 Page 9 This type of injury occurs in the tendon of muscles that originate off of the lateral epicondyle during repeated wrist extension.

When can the biceps brachii also act as a Supinator?

Note that biceps brachii cannot act as a supinator when the forearm is fully extended, so the most powerful supination occurs when the elbow joint is flexed to 90 degrees.

What is the term for the biceps Brachii during forearm flexion?

prime mover (agonist) term for the biceps brachii during forearm flexion. synergist. term that describes the relation of brachioradialis to biceps brachii during forearm flexion. antagonist.

How many origins does the triceps brachii have?

Even though the triceps brachii has three separate muscle heads and three separate points of origin, this muscle only has a single point of insertion. The muscle fibers from all three heads converge together and insert onto the olecranon process, the round prominence at the back and top of the ulna.
