If you run a shrouded fan on the front of the IC, the shroud will reduce airflow to the IC at speed. If you run a un-shrouded fan, you lose a lot of airflow through the fan. If you have a half-size rad, run a fan on it and a fan on the back of the IC where there is no rad behind.

Do I need a fan on my intercooler?

Placing a fan on will help to reduce heat soak which top mount intercoolers are plagued with. This is where better quality cores come into their own as they can get rid of heat soak quicker. Remember the cooler is just a heat exchanger, if air flow is poor the exchange is low just like any other cooling system.

What do intercooler fans do?

An intercooler, or "charge-air cooler", is an air-to-air or air-to-liquid heat exchange device used on turbocharged and supercharged (forced induction) internal combustion engines to improve their volumetric efficiency by increasing intake air-charge density through isochoric cooling.

Do intercooler add horsepower?

It also makes the compressed air denser as it enters the intake manifold, which causes a richer air-to-fuel mix in the engine's cylinders. The result is increased power output. So, the answer to the question is yes! An intercooler does help to increase horsepower.

What does upgrading your intercooler do?

Upgrading the intercooler on your turbocharged car means more horsepower, consistent performance, and safer operating temperatures.

Do you need a tune for a front mount intercooler?

Registered. yes, a fmic will change your MAF scaling and your a/f ratio's. It definitely needs to be tuned.

Do you need to tune after bigger intercooler?

Upgrading the intercooler doesn't require a tune.

Can I run an Fmic without a tune?

You can definitely run an intercooler without being tuned for it though, like others have said, you can really optimize performance by running a Stage 2 tune. If you already have an AP3 then adding the FMIC means you are essentially stage two so you should be able to just grab the Cobb OTS Stg2 tunes and be golden.

How much HP does intercooler Add Focus ST?

This performance intercooler showed an increase of up to 25 HP (19 kW) and 9 lb-ft (12 N-m) of torque compared to OE during back to back dyno comparisons in a wind tunnel which generates air velocity that matches vehicle speed.

How much HP gain from intercooler?

The usual rule of thumb is to allow 6 to 7 square inches of internal intercooler flow area for every 100 hp of engine output, but this can increase by up to 40 percent with really dense internal fins.

Does a bigger intercooler increase turbo lag?

It should be noted, however, that too large of an intercooler can actually do more harm than good. If you have an extremely massive intercooler, you will cause more turbocharger lag and more drag inside the whole system.

Does intercooler increase mpg?

An intercooler itself does not increase power or efficiency. It cools the compressed air allowing more fuel to be injected without high exhaust temperatures. At speeds and throttle levels were you would be getting ~25+mpg it would be making 3-6psi of boost.

How much difference does an intercooler make diesel?

An intercooler on a turbo deisel will add anywhere from 10-15% additional power due to more air getting in. More air equals more efficient burn. More efficient burn, means more efficient motor.

Is an intercooler worth it?

If your car's engine is naturally aspirated, there's absolutely no need for an intercooler. Aspirated engines already cool the air as it's fed into the engine by the radiator ducts. The temperature is already low to begin with and any extra cooling by the intercooler isn't significant.

How efficient is an intercooler?

Q: What ranges of efficiency can be expected from an intercooler? A typical air-to-air intercooler for a street application achieves between 60% and 70% efficiency, an excellent/optimum design for road racing can approach close to 90% efficiency, but requires an adequate “budget!”

Do intercoolers add lag?

the increase in piping and intercooler due increase lag and add preasure drop. as for increase in power, yes, lower temps mean more dense air and more power.

Can you have a cold air intake and intercooler?

You can have both. Cold air Intake is just routing the air filter outside the engine bay. Intercooler is a heat exchanger btwn the turbo outlet and the throttle Body.

How much HP does a downpipe add?

It's generally accepted that installing a downpipe will add just 10 to 20 horsepower, but that gain is noticeable when the engine is revved up.

Can I run a turbo without an intercooler?

Running a turbo without an intercooler will cause hot air to enter the combustion chamber and prematurely detonate. ... Running a turbo without an intercooler will cause extremely hot air to enter the engine – because there's no intercooler that cools them down before entering the engine.

Can you run two intercoolers?

As Rob says the extra intercooler will cause a larger pressure drop. The turbo then has to work harder to get the same boost at the manifold and therfore increasing the charge temp that the intercooers need to cool. You wont gain anything really unless the 2 intercooler have a lower pressure drop than the single one.

How do you clean an intercooler?

Spray the outside and inlets of the intercooler with degreaser to prepare any gunk or debris for removal. After that, you can use acetone or kerosene to rinse out the intercooler. Place in a container and pour the liquid through the inlet, shimmy it slightly and then let it sit for about 15 minutes.

What is full bolt ons for Focus ST?

Full bolt on would be intake, turbo back exhaust and an intercooler. Without a tune for the parts the factory settings will just compensate and not let you make any more power than the factory torque target allows.

How much power can a stock Focus ST handle?

When Are Beefier Internals Required? The Focus ST makes around 250 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque in its stock configuration. With a larger turbo and some bolt-on performance items, 360 whp can be reached easily, but as you push the limits upgraded internals are needed.
