Since the engine is burning pre-mix oil we have to be careful here, because blueish-white smoke is a normal occurrence of two-stroke engine operation. However, excessive smoke after warm up can be an indicator of a couple problems.

Why is my 2 stroke so Smokey?

There are a few reasons a 2 stroke can smoke more than normal: The fuel mixture is too rich. The oil/fuel mixture is too heavy on oil. The power valve (if you have one) is dirty.

How do I know if my 2 stroke is bad end?

Re: Bottom end 2 stroke

Any vertical movement in the crank bearings is bad, you can check this by removing the flywheel cover and pushing up/down on the flywheel. Also bad is any vertical movement at the rod/crank pin, but this will require removing the cylinder to inspect.

Does a 2 stroke fire every stroke?

A 2-stroke engine fires once every rotation of the crankshaft (every second stroke of the piston) when the piston has compressed the fuel/air mixture. ... The T47 is also unusual in that (similar to a 4-stroke engine) it incorporates exhaust valves to control the emission of the burnt gases.

Which is better 2-stroke or 4 stroke?

Because 2-stroke engines are designed to run at a higher RPM, they also tend to wear out faster; a 4-stroke engine is generally more durable. That being said, 2-stroke engines are more powerful. Two-stroke engines are a much simpler design, making them easier to fix.

2 strokes don't smoke!!

What is faster a two-stroke or four-stroke?

A stroke is a motion of a piston, meaning a two-stroke dirt bike has 2 different motions of the piston, while a four-stroke has 4. 2 Strokes are generally more unstable and accelerate faster, while a 4 stroke is more consistent and has a higher top speed.

How often should you change the top end on a 2 stroke?

This is why it's difficult to determine the number of hours you should go before rebuilding the top-end. Going by the book, a 125 should be inspected and/or replaced every 5-10 hours of racing.

What makes a 2 stroke hard to start?

(1) That you've flooded the engine by trying to start it, or that the lower end is loaded up (because you left the gas petcock on). (2) That there is no spark (thus, the plug is wet because the plug never ignited the fuel).

When should you do a bottom end rebuild on a 2 stroke?

The bottom end of a two-stroke can usually take around 70-80 hours before rebuilding, however, it all comes down to the way the bike is being used. It's always advised that when you rebuild the bottom end to also rebuild the top end.

How do you tell if a 2 stroke has a bad head gasket?

Feel around the head/cylinder joint for streams of escaping exhaust gasses. If you find places where a highly pressurized stream of hot gas is escaping it means the head gasket is leaking. Do not put your hand too close to the engine as it will quickly become hot.

Can you ride a 2 stroke slow?

You can ride your 2-stroke mildly as well, just keep the right gear for the speed and revs not to high but relatively high. Generally 2-strokes don't like low revs. When riding longer strights you have to keep swinging with throttle as 2-strokes don't perform very well on steady gas.

How much does it cost to rebuild a 2 stroke engine?

How Much Does It Cost To Rebuild A Top-End 2 Stroke? The cost of rebuilding a 2 stroke dirt bike top end can vary from under $50 to $500+. It depends on what parts need to be replaced and if you're doing the rebuild yourself or paying someone else to do the work.

Is it easy to rebuild a 2 stroke engine?

Periodically, if you own a two-stroke, there will come a point where you need to rebuild the top end of your engine. ... While two-stroke engines are relatively simple mechanical devices, rebuilding them requires knowledge of how they work, attention to detail, and a systematic approach.

How much does it cost to rebuild a 2 stroke dirt bike bottom end?

When you are using OEM parts, which includes all new bearings throughout the engine, a cylinder head, new valvetrain, new crank, new piston, new cam chain and tensioner, and a freshly honed cylinder, the cost comes to $1300 to $1500.

What does white smoke on a 2 stroke mean?

Since the engine is burning pre-mix oil we have to be careful here, because blueish-white smoke is a normal occurrence of two-stroke engine operation. ... White smoke exiting the exhaust pipe after the engine has warmed may be a sign that coolant is burning in the combustion chamber.

Why does my 2 stroke keeps flooding?

Two-stroke engines are small internal combustion engines that are most commonly found on lawnmowers, chainsaws and weed whackers. ... The engine may flood because of overpriming or because the choke has been left open too far, causing an excess amount of fuel to reach the combustion chamber.

What causes a 2 stroke to lose compression?

The most likely reason why a two-stroke engine has lost compression is an issue with the piston or piston rings. The piston is the part of the engine that creates the compression needed to run. If there is a crack in the piston, air can escape and cause a lack of compression.

What are the symptoms of bad piston rings?

When drivers notice excessive oil consumption, white or gray exhaust smoke, poor acceleration, and/or overall loss of power or poor engine performance, they may be seeing signs of worn piston rings.

Are 2 strokes more maintenance?

While two-stroke engines run more simplistically, their need for maintenance is usually much higher. However, two-stroke parts are notoriously cheaper than four-stroke. ... Two-strokes also require more frequent shifting, but riders can get a faster top speed with more power.

Are 2 strokes more reliable?

With differences in speed, maintenance, and consistency of the two-stroke, it is a more reliable dirt bike than a four-stroke. Overall, each bike has its pros and cons, but two-strokes are quicker, easier to repair parts, and is also incredibly light.

Are 2 strokes coming back?

We can't be the ones to answer that, but one thing is for sure, 2-strokes are making their comeback. They're now present across all forms of riding and racing, which include Enduro, NHHA, Motocross (hobby, amateur, and professional levels), local enthusiasts, and Amateur MX.

Is it worth rebuilding a 4 stroke?

A 4 stroke that is difficult to start may be a sign that it needs to be rebuilt. This could be caused by valves that are worn or out of adjustment. It could also be a worn top-end that is low on compression. However, just because it's hard to start doesn't mean it needs to be rebuilt.
