Which structure contains the nuclei of the oculomotor nerve?
The oculomotor nuclei are located in the mesencephalon at the level of the superior colliculi. These paired midline structures are located ventrolateral to the aqueduct of Sylvius and are bordered laterally by the median longitudinal fasciculi.
Where does the oculomotor nerve originate?
The oculomotor nerve originates from 2 nuclei in the midbrain[1]: Oculomotor nucleus. Accessory parasympathetic nucleus (Edinger-Westphal nucleus)
Where is the Edinger-Westphal nucleus found?
The EWpg is what is thought of as the classic ONC—sending parasympathetic nerve fibers towards the eye. It is located in the midbrain immediately dorsal to the oculomotor nucleus near the level of the superior colliculus, which is why it is often included in the overarching term oculomotor complex.
What does the Edinger-Westphal nucleus do?
The Edinger–Westphal nuclei provide preganglionic input to the ciliary ganglion mediating the pupillary light reflex and accommodation responses of the lens (i.e., the ciliary body).

30 related questions foundWhat is Pretectal nucleus?
The olivary pretectal nucleus is a primary visual centre sensitive to luminance changes. It is involved in the pupillary light reflex, the consensual pupillary light reflex and related reflexes, such as the lid closure reflex whereby pupillary constriction takes place.
Where is the inferior Salivatory nucleus found?
The inferior salivatory nucleus is a small nucleus in the upper medulla that innervates the otic ganglion with GVE fibers of the glossopharyngeal nerve. The otic ganglion provides parasympathetic innervation to the parotid gland.
Where is the superior Salivatory nucleus located?
The cell bodies of these fibers are located in the superior salivatory nucleus. This nucleus is located in the caudal part of the pons near the facial motor nucleus.
What is EW nucleus?
The Edinger-Westphal nucleus is a small parasympathetic motor nucleus in the midbrain and one of the two nuclei for the oculomotor nerve. It is one of the cranial nerve nuclei.
Is the oculomotor nerve sympathetic or parasympathetic?
In addition, as discussed in the section on autonomic innervation, the oculomotor nerve carries the parasympathetic preganglionic axons that synapses in the ciliary ganglion, and whose postganglionic axons innervate the pupillary sphincter and ciliary muscles of the eye.
How many oculomotor nucleus are there?
There are two nuclei for the oculomotor nerve: The oculomotor nucleus originates at the level of the superior colliculus.
What is the Glossopharyngeal?
The glossopharyngeal nerve is the 9th cranial nerve (CN IX). It is one of the four cranial nerves that has sensory, motor, and parasympathetic functions. It originates from the medulla oblongata and terminates in the pharynx.
What function is associated with the oculomotor nerve quizlet?
What are the functions of the oculomotor nerve? Nerve III controls muscles that turn eyeball up,down, and medially as well as controlling the iris, lens, and the upper eyelid.
What is the function of the oculomotor nerve?
The oculomotor nerve is the third cranial nerve (CN III). It allows movement of the eye muscles, constriction of the pupil, focusing the eyes and the position of the upper eyelid. Cranial nerve III works with other cranial nerves to control eye movements and support sensory functioning.
Where is hypoglossal nucleus?
The hypoglossal nucleus lies caudal in the floor of the fourth ventricle, part of the calamus scriptorius. Its fibers traverse the medulla from back to front, thus circling around and in front of the inferior olivary nucleus and emerging from the medulla in the preolivary sulcus, between the pyramid and inferior olive.
What kind of fibers originates from the superior Salivatory nucleus?
The lacrimal, sublingual, and submandibular preganglionic parasympathetic fibers of the facial nerve originate in the nearby superior salivary nucleus.
How many nuclei does facial nerve have?
The facial nerve is comprised of three nuclei: The main motor nucleus. The parasympathetic nuclei. The sensory nucleus.
What is the nucleus ambiguus made of?
The nucleus ambiguus is a group of large motor neurons, situated deep in the medullary reticular formation. The nucleus ambiguus contains the cell bodies of nerves that innervate the muscles of the soft palate, pharynx, and larynx which are strongly associated with speech and swallowing.
What is visceral efferent?
General visceral efferent fibers (GVE) or visceral efferents or autonomic efferents, are the efferent nerve fibers of the autonomic nervous system (also known as the visceral efferent nervous system that provide motor innervation to smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands (contrast with special visceral efferent (SVE ...
What organs receive fibers from ciliary ganglion?
Nerve fibers leave the brain and enter the ganglia. These fibers synapse (a junction between nerves where they communicate) with neurons going to the eye. Nerves from the ciliary ganglion innervate the muscles that constrict the pupil, a hole in the iris that lets light enter the eye.
What does Pretectal mean?
Medical Definition of pretectal
: occurring in or being the transitional zone of the brain stem between the midbrain and the diencephalon that is situated rostral to the superior colliculus and is associated especially with the analysis and distribution of light impulses.
What is the tectum of the midbrain?
Anatomically, the tectum is that portion of the mesencephalon, or midbrain, sitting between the hindbrain and the forebrain. The name is the Latin word for roof and reflects the view of early anatomists that the tectum formed a roof over the fluid-filled cerebral aqueduct and the tegmentum.
Is the superior colliculus part of the thalamus?
The superior colliculi are just below the thalamus and above the two inferior colliculi. The superior colliculus is often referred to as the tectum or optic tectum in non-human vertebrates.
