The left innominate artery originated from a prominent divertic- ulum of Kommerell off the proximal descending aorta and bifurcated into the left subclavian and left common carotid arteries (Figure 1). The trachea was not compressed.

Is there a right and left innominate artery?

The brachiocephalic artery (or brachiocephalic trunk or innominate artery) is an artery of the mediastinum that supplies blood to the right arm and the head and neck. It is the first branch of the aortic arch. ... The left common carotid, and the left subclavian artery, come directly off the aortic arch.

How many innominate arteries are there?

Left and right innominate arteries. Four branches with no innominate artery. Double aortic arch. Left-sided arch with a left-sided innominate artery.

Why is there no left brachiocephalic artery?

Whereas in the left side, the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery arises directly from the arch of aorta. So, there is no left brachiocephalic artery. ... The axillary artery in each arm then gives rise to brachial artery.

Why is it called the innominate artery?

It is also known as the innominate artery or the brachiocephalic trunk. The name refers to the fact that blood flows through this very short artery to the arm (brachio) and the head (cephalic). It is an artery, meaning that it is a thick-walled blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.

THE BRACHIOCEPHALIC TRUNK

Is there a right and left brachiocephalic artery?

It is the first branch of the aortic arch, and soon after it emerges, the brachiocephalic artery divides into the right common carotid artery and the right subclavian artery. There is no brachiocephalic artery for the left side of the body.

Is there a left and a right subclavian artery?

The left subclavian artery is the fifth branch of the aorta and the third branch from the arch of the aorta. The right subclavian artery arises from the brachiocephalic artery and its branches. (Right subclavian is at upper left, and left subclavian is at upper right.) ... They receive blood from the aortic arch.

What is the function of the left subclavian artery?

The left subclavian artery receives oxygenated blood from the aortic arch (the top portion of the largest artery in the body that carries blood away from the heart). The right subclavian artery receives blood from the brachiocephalic branch.

Is there a left brachiocephalic vein?

The left brachiocephalic vein is formed posterior to the medial end of the left clavicle and descends diagonally to join the right brachiocephalic vein posterior to the right first costal cartilage. These veins become the superior vena cava.

What is the function of the left common carotid artery?

Together, the right and left common carotid arteries provide the principal blood supply to the head and neck. The left common carotid arises directly from the aorta (the huge artery that distributes blood from the heart to the body).

Where is the left innominate vein?

The left and right brachiocephalic veins (or innominate veins) are major veins in the upper chest, formed by the union of each corresponding internal jugular vein and subclavian vein. This is at the level of the sternoclavicular joint. The left brachiocephalic vein is nearly always longer than the right.

What are innominate arteries?

The innominate artery brings blood to your right arm, head, and neck. It's the first branch from the aortic arch that carries blood away from the heart. A blockage slowing blood flow in this artery can put your life at risk. You need quick, effective treatment.

What is aberrant innominate artery?

A retroesophageal innominate artery is a rare congenital anomaly theoretically occurring if there is a break in either aortic arch proximal to the origin of the common carotid artery. The resulting vessel is the last off the arch and gives origin to a subclavian and common carotid artery (Fig. 1).

Where is left carotid artery?

The Common Carotid artery is a large elastic artery which provides the main blood supply to the head and neck. The carotid arteries are the primary vessels supplying blood to the brain and face. The left common carotid artery (LCCA) arises in the thorax from the arch of the aorta.

Where does the left common carotid artery go?

Only the left common carotid artery has a substantial presence in the thorax. It originates directly from the aortic arch, and travels upward through the superior mediastinum to the level of the left sternoclavicular joint.

What is the brachial artery?

The brachial artery is the extension of the axillary artery starting at the lower margin of the teres major muscle and is the major artery of the upper extremity. The brachial artery courses along the ventral surface of the arm and gives rise to multiple smaller branching arteries before reaching the cubital fossa.

Which vein drains blood from the left side of the thorax and esophagus into the left brachiocephalic?

Each internal thoracic vein, also known as an internal mammary vein, drains the anterior surface of the chest wall and flows into the brachiocephalic vein. The remainder of the blood supply from the thorax drains into the azygos vein.

Are there two subclavian veins?

Location. The left subclavian vein and the right subclavian vein arise as a continuation of the vein that is under the arm, called the axillary vein; there is one axillary vein extending from under the arm on each side of the body.

Where is the brachial vein?

The brachial artery and vein can be found by palpating the medial intermuscular septum in the proximal and middle thirds of the arm. The vein is medial and posterior to the artery in this area.

What happens if the subclavian artery is blocked?

The symptoms that do occur are tied to the area that is blocked. You may experience arm pain or muscle fatigue when using your arms above your head, or doing any activity that demands more oxygen-rich blood flow to the arms. Other symptoms can include: Dizziness (vertigo) with arm activity.

Where does the left subclavian artery end?

The subclavian artery is the artery that passes with the roots of brachial plexus between the anterior and middle scalene muscles, through the scalene space, over the first rib in the groove for the subclavian artery. It ends at the lateral border of the first rib and continues as the axillary artery.

What is the treatment for left left subclavian artery stenosis?

Symptomatic subclavian artery occlusive disease should be treated with endovascular stenting and angioplasty as first line management. If it is not successful then open surgery should be considered. Bypassing the carotid to the subclavian or to the axillary artery are both good treatment modalities.

Can you feel the subclavian artery?

The subclavian arteries are usually palpable along the medial portion of the supraclavicular fossa. In patients receiving hemodialysis, a bruit may be heard on the side ipsilateral to a vascular access. Pressing on the branchial artery often extinguishes the bruit.

Where is the subclavian artery located?

The subclavian arteries lie just below the clavicles, providing blood supply to the bilateral upper extremities with contributions to the head and neck. The right subclavian artery derives from the brachiocephalic trunk, while the left subclavian artery originates directly from the aortic arch.

Where do you feel subclavian artery?

One of my favorite points of palpable anatomy is the subclavian artery that is (shockingly, given its name) located just beneath your clavicle. I can often be found hunched over a laptop in local coffee shops, staring blankly at my screen while grabbing the medial portion of my right clavicle.
