Is the vallecula part of the hypopharynx?
Andrew Rivera The hypopharynx extends from the level of the hyoid bone and valleculae to the cricopharyngeus (or inferior margin of the cricoid cartilage on imaging studies). Its three major anatomic subsites include the Piriform Sinus - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
What is hypopharynx anatomy?
The laryngopharynx, also referred to as the hypopharynx, is the most caudal portion of the pharynx and is a crucial connection point through which food, water, and air pass. Specifically, it refers to the point at which the pharynx divides anteriorly into the larynx and posteriorly into the esophagus.
What is the hypopharynx?
The hypopharynx is the bottom part of the pharynx (throat). The pharynx is a hollow tube about 5 inches long that starts behind the nose, goes down the neck, and ends at the top of the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (the tube that goes from the throat to the stomach).
Where does the hypopharynx begin?
The hypopharynx and larynx both begin at the lower margin of the oropharynx and end at the lower margin of the cricoid cartilage. The hypopharynx is part of the digestive tract, carrying food and liquids to the esophagus.
Is the larynx part of the hypopharynx?
The hypopharynx is the lower part of the throat (pharynx) that lies right behind your larynx. The hypopharynx is the entrance into the esophagus (the tube that connects your throat to your stomach).

The oropharynx is the portion of the pharynx that is posterior to the oral cavity. The most inferior portion of the pharynx is the laryngopharynx that extends from the hyoid bone down to the lower margin of the larynx. The upper part of the pharynx (throat) lets only air pass through.
What separates pharynx from larynx?
The pharynx extends from the caudal end of the nasal cavity/oral cavity to the larynx and is divided by the soft palate to form the nasopharynx dorsally and the oropharynx ventrally. Starting at the base of the epiglottis and extending caudad to the arch of the cricoid cartilage is the laryngopharynx.
Where is the oropharynx located?
Your oropharynx is the middle part of your throat (pharynx) just beyond your mouth. Your oropharynx includes the back part of your tongue (base of tongue), your tonsils, your soft palate (back part of the roof of your mouth), and the sides and walls of your throat.
What is oropharynx and hypopharynx?
The hypopharynx (rare plural: hypopharynges or hypopharynxes) or laryngopharynx forms the most inferior portion of the pharynx, being the continuation of the oropharynx superiorly and both the larynx and esophagus inferiorly. It also forms part of the upper respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract.
What is the oropharynx function?
The oropharynx serves both the respiratory and digestive systems. The oropharynx is the critical region that joins the oral cavity and nasopharynx with the larynx and hypopharynx.
What is the larynx and hypopharynx?
The larynx is the voice box and helps us speak and also protects the windpipe and lungs during swallowing. The larynx contains the vocal cords. The hypopharynx is the part of the throat (pharynx) that beside and behind the larynx.
Where is the Vallecula Epiglottica located?
Anatomical Parts
The epiglottic vallecula is a depression just behind the root of the tongue between the medial and lateral glosso-epiglottic folds in the throat. These depressions serve as "spit traps"; saliva is temporarily held in the valleculae to prevent initiation of the swallowing reflex.
Is the base of the tongue hypopharynx?
The base of tongue and hypopharynx are two physiological regions of the pharynx found between the soft palate and pharyngoesophageal segment where coordinated mechanisms responsible for airway protection and bolus clearance are located, namely, retraction of the tongue base, longitudinal pharyngeal constriction, ...
What are the parts of hypopharynx?
The hypopharynx (the inferior portion of the pharynx) is subdivided into three sites: (1) the pyriform sinuses (the paired recesses lateral to the larynx), (2) the posterior pharyngeal wall, and (3) the postcricoid region.
What is included in the oropharynx?
The oropharynx includes the soft palate, side and back wall of the throat, tonsils, and the back third of the tongue.
What structures are in the oropharynx?
The four subsites contained within the oropharynx are the base of the tongue, the palatine tonsils and tonsillar pillars, the soft palate, and the pharyngeal wall.
Is the uvula part of the oropharynx?
The oropharynx is the space in the back of the mouth, sometimes called the back of the throat. The base of the tongue, parts of the tonsil, the back of the soft palate, and the uvula are all located in the oropharynx. The oropharynx is often just called the pharynx.
What separates oral cavity from oropharynx?
The palate is the horseshoe-shaped, domed roof of the oral cavity. It is divided into a hard portion and a soft portion. The hard palate belongs to the oral cavity and separates it from the nasal cavities. The soft palate belongs to the oropharynx and separates it from the nasopharynx.
Which muscle forms part of the posterior wall of the oropharynx?
The muscles that form the posterior wall of the oropharynx are the overlapping superior and middle pharyngeal constrictors and their overlying mucous membrane. The glossopharyngeal nerve and the stylopharyngeus muscle enter the pharynx at the border between the superior and middle constrictors.
What is the oropharynx also known as?
In human respiratory system: The pharynx. …and is therefore called the oral pharynx or oropharynx. It is delimited from the nasopharynx by the soft palate, which roofs the posterior part of the oral cavity.
What separates nasopharynx and oropharynx?
The nose leads into the nasopharynx and the mouth leads into the oropharynx. The epiglottis separates the oropharynx into the laryngopharynx. The pharynx is divided into the nasopharynx, oropharynx and laryngopharynx.
Which comes first larynx or pharynx?
