A protonema (plural: protonemata) is a thread-like chain of cells that forms the earliest stage of development of the gametophyte (the haploid phase) in the life cycle of mosses.

Is protonema a diploid?

A. Haploid and is found in mosses. Hint: The gametophyte form shows several developmental stages such as the spore, the protonema, and the gametophore, which produces the sex organs. ...

Are mosses haploid?

In mosses, the dominant stage is the haploid generation (the gametophyte). This means that the green, leafy gametophytic tissue is haploid (has only one set of chromosomes). The gametophyte refers to all organs and tissues that are a part of the haploid generation.

Are Moss leaves haploid or diploid?

In the moss, the diploid phase consists of a sporangium and stalk that grows out of the haploid female gametophyte. In the fern and flowering plant, the entire leaf-bearing plant is diploid.

Is a Seta haploid or diploid?

Diploid (2n) cells arising from the zygote continue to divide to form a small sporophyte (2n). The sporophyte consists of a stalk (called seta) and a capsule, remains attached to the gametophyte, living in depency with it. In the sporophyte meioses occur leading to the formation of haploid (n) spores.

Haploid vs Diploid cell and Cell division

Are Gemma cups diploid?

The gemma cups are cup-like structures containing gemmae. The gemmae are small discs of haploid tissue, and they directly give rise to new gametophytes.

Are Pteridophytes diploid?

Hint: Pteridophytes are vascular plants that have the main plant body differentiated into leaves, roots, and sometimes true stem, which is diploid. Their life cycle shows true alternation of generation having both phases i.e, gametophytic as well as sporophytic that are independent at maturity.

Are mosses unicellular or multicellular?

Although they share many superficial characteristics with algae, mosses are classified in the plant kingdom because they are multicellular organisms...

Are Sporophytes haploid or diploid?

In the sporophyte phase a diploid (having two sets of chromosomes) plant body grows and eventually produces spores through meiosis. These spores divide mitotically to produce haploid (having a single set of chromosomes) gamete-producing bodies called gametophytes.

Which of the following is diploid in the moss plant?

The correct answer is spore mother cell.

Is Calyptra haploid or diploid?

When the sporophyte emerges from the archegonium, it tears off the venter and creates a sort of cap on the sporangium, called a calyptra. This calyptra is haploid, as it originated from the female gametophyte tissue.

Is archegonium haploid or diploid?

The male and female sex organs, the antheridia and the archegonia respectively, are produced on the gametophytic plants. Haploid sperm are released from the antheridia and when a haploid sperm reaches a haploid egg in an archegonium the egg is fertilized to produce a diploid cell.

Are gametophyte haploid or diploid?

The multicellular diploid plant structure is called the sporophyte, which produces spores through meiotic (asexual) division. The multicellular haploid plant structure is called the gametophyte, which is formed from the spore and give rise to the haploid gametes.

Is protonema present in Pteridophytes?

Pteridophyte gametophyte has a protonemal and leafy stage.

What is Haplontic Diplontic and Haplodiplontic?

Diplontic: The multicellular stage is diploid. Haplontic: The multicellular stage is haploid. Haplodiplontic: There are two multicellular stages, one haploid and one diploid.

Is a gametophyte a diploid cell?

The precursor to the male angiosperm gametophyte is a diploid microspore mother cell located inside the anther. Once the microspore undergoes meiosis, 4 haploid cells are formed, each of which is a singled celled male gametophyte. The male gametophyte will develop via one or two rounds of mitosis inside the anther.

Are gymnosperms haploid or diploid?

The dominant phase of a gymnosperm is a diploid sporophyte. The haploid phase is represented by the male and female gametophytes, which is limited to a few cells. The gametophytes do not have an independent existence and remain confined to sporangia borne on sporophylls.

What is diploid and haploid?

Haploid is the quality of a cell or organism having a single set of chromosomes. ... Sexually reproducing organisms are diploid (having two sets of chromosomes, one from each parent). In humans, only their egg and sperm cells are haploid.

Are Prothallus haploid or diploid?

The prothallus is haploid, since it grew from a spore which had been formed by meiosis. It does not have any vascular tissue and uses small rhizoids to anchor it to the ground. On the underside of the prothallus the sex organs form. The female structure, called an archegonium, contains a single egg.

Are Plantae unicellular or multicellular?

Plantae. Plants are multicellular and most don't move, although gametes of some plants move using cilia or flagella. Organelles including nucleus, chloroplasts are present, and cell walls are present.

Are bryophytes differentiated?

Though not as complex as other plants, bryophytes live in humid and shaded places. ... The plant body is slightly differentiated, though they do not have true roots, stems, and leaves. They generally have something similar to roots called the rhizoids. The main body of the bryophytes is more thallus like and haploid.

Are bryophytes Gametophyte?

Bryophytes are gametophyte dominant, meaning that the more prominent, longer-lived plant is the haploid gametophyte. The diploid sporophytes appear only occasionally and remain attached to and nutritionally dependent on the gametophyte.

Which fern is Woody?

Unlike flowering plants, tree ferns do not form new woody tissue in their trunk as they grow. Rather, the trunk is supported by a fibrous mass of roots that expands as the tree fern grows.

Is the male Antheridiophore haploid or diploid?

antheridiophore - a structure which bears antheridia. zygote - single, diploid cell produced by the union of sperm and egg inside the archegonium. This will grow and develop into the sporophyte.
