Protactinium (formerly protoactinium) is a chemical element with the symbol Pa and atomic number 91. It is a dense, silvery-gray actinide metal which readily reacts with oxygen, water vapor and inorganic acids.

What type of element is protactinium?

protactinium (Pa), radioactive chemical element of the actinoid series of the periodic table, rarer than radium; its atomic number is 91. It occurs in all uranium ores to the extent of 0.34 part per million of uranium.

Is protactinium a transition metal?

Protactinium is an actinide element and sits between thorium and uranium on the periodic table. However, protactinium also closely resembles niobium and tantalum, both of which are transition metals used in a range of chemical and metallurgical applications.

Is neptunium a metal nonmetal or metalloid?

Neptunium is a chemical element with the symbol Np and atomic number 93. A radioactive actinide metal, neptunium is the first transuranic element.

Is francium a metal?

francium (Fr), heaviest chemical element of Group 1 (Ia) in the periodic table, the alkali metal group.

What is PROTACTINIUM?

Can you buy francium?

Fast Facts: The Most Expensive Natural Elements

The most expensive natural element is francium, but it decays so quickly it can't be collected to be sold. If you could buy it, you'd pay billions of dollars for 100 grams. The most expensive natural element that is stable enough to purchase is lutetium.

Why francium is the most metallic?

Francium is an alkali metal in group 1/IA. All alkali metals have one valence electron. As you go down the group, the number of electron energy levels increases – lithium has two, sodium has three, etc..., as indicated by the period number. The result is that the outermost electron gets further from the nucleus.

Is neptunium a synthetic element?

Neptunium, element 93 on the periodic table of elements, was the first transuranium element to be produced synthetically and the first actinide series transuranium element to be discovered. Its discovery came after several false findings of the element, including Enrico Fermi's attempt to bombard uranium with neutrons.

What type of radiation is emitted by protactinium?

In the first stage in the protactinium generator, uranium (U) decays into thorium (Th) and alpha (α) radiation is emitted.

When protactinium decays What element is formed?

When protactinium undergoes alpha decay, protactinium ejects an alpha particle made of two protons and two neutrons. This changes the atom to a new atom of actinium.

What products are made from neptunium?

Neptunium-237 can be bombarded with neutrons to create plutonium-238, which is then used to create nuclear batteries to power satellites (Fig. 3) and spacecraft for very long durations of time. Another use of neptunium is in high-energy neutron detection equipment for scientific purposes.

What is the use of neptunium?

The main use of neptunium-237 is in devices for detecting high-energy neutrons. Neptunium is dangerous. As well as radioactive, it's also pyrophoric, capable of spontaneously catching fire at room temperature. Neptunium was discovered in 1940 by Edwin McMillan and Philip H.

What is the meaning of neptunium?

: a radioactive metallic element that is chemically similar to uranium and is obtained in nuclear reactors especially as a by-product in the production of plutonium — see Chemical Elements Table.

Which element is the most metallic?

Metallic character increases down the group . Thus Bi is most metallic.

Why francium is not the most reactive metal?

Put simply, the size and mass of francium means that its electrons are travelling at very high speeds. At these speeds the electrons become closer to the nucleus than expected, and they are consequently harder to remove.

What is francium made of?

Natural francium is the result of an alpha disintegration of actinium. It occurs naturally in uranium minerals, but the Earth's crust probably contains less than 1 ounce of francium at any time. Francium can be made artificially if thorium is bombarded with protons.
