Phosphorus is a mineral found in your bones. Along with calcium, phosphorus is needed to build strong healthy bones, as well as, keeping other parts of your body healthy.

Is phosphorus A mineral or nutrient?

Phosphorus, an essential mineral, is naturally present in many foods and available as a dietary supplement. Phosphorus is a component of bones, teeth, DNA, and RNA [1]. In the form of phospholipids, phosphorus is also a component of cell membrane structure and of the body's key energy source, ATP.

Is phosphorus a major mineral?

Phosphorus is one of the major minerals, which our bodies need in relatively larger amounts to keep healthy. We can find phosphorus in a variety of foods, particularly those rich in protein.

Is phosphorus a mineral or electrolyte?

Phosphorus is an element that plays an important role in the body. In the body, almost all phosphorus is combined with oxygen, forming phosphate. Phosphate is one of the body's electrolytes.

What is phosphorus mineral?

What is phosphorus? Phosphorus is a mineral found in your bones. Along with calcium, phosphorus is needed to build strong healthy bones, as well as, keeping other parts of your body healthy.

biochem of phosphorus

Is phosphorus a compound?

Phosphorus is a chemical element with the symbol P and atomic number 15. Elemental phosphorus exists in two major forms, white phosphorus and red phosphorus, but because it is highly reactive, phosphorus is never found as a free element on Earth.

Is Phosphorus a multivitamin?

Phosphorus is available in a few multivitamin/mineral supplements and some other dietary supplements. Phosphorus in dietary supplements is often in the form of dipotassium phosphate, disodium phosphate, phosphatidylcholine, or phosphatidylserine.

Is Phosphorus a metal or a nonmetal?

Phosphorus (P, Z=15). Phosphorus is a nonmetallic element that exists in several allotropic forms (see below). It is found in the Earth's crust at a concentration of 1000 ppm, making it the 11th most abundant element.

Is Phosphorus a gas?

phosphorus (P), nonmetallic chemical element of the nitrogen family (Group 15 [Va] of the periodic table) that at room temperature is a colourless, semitransparent, soft, waxy solid that glows in the dark.

Is phosphorus a carbohydrate?

This view represents these molecules simply as “hydrated” carbon atom chains in which water molecules attach to each carbon atom, leading to the term “carbohydrates.” Although all carbohydrates contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, there are some that also contain nitrogen, phosphorus, and/or sulfur.

Is sodium a mineral?

Sodium is another important mineral. In most Americans' diets, sodium primarily comes from salt (sodium chloride).

Is phosphorus a protein?

Proteins may be defined as compounds of high molar mass consisting largely or entirely of chains of amino acids. ... In addition to carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, all proteins contain nitrogen and sulfur atoms, and many also contain phosphorus atoms and traces of other elements.

What are examples of minerals?

Minerals are those elements on the earth and in foods that our bodies need to develop and function normally. Those essential for health include calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, chromium, copper, fluoride, molybdenum, manganese, and selenium.

What are types of mineral?

There are two kinds of minerals: macrominerals and trace minerals. You need larger amounts of macrominerals. They include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride and sulfur. You only need small amounts of trace minerals.

Is zinc a mineral?

Zinc is an essential mineral that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Zinc is also found in many cold lozenges and some over-the-counter drugs sold as cold remedies.

Why is phosphorus a nonmetal?

It is classified as a nonmetal. Phosphorus atoms have 15 electrons and 15 protons with 5 valence electrons in the outer shell. Phosphorus is a highly reactive element and, as a result, is never found on Earth as a free element. ... White phosphorus is very reactive and unstable.

What type of material is phosphorus?

Phosphorus is a non-metal that sits just below nitrogen in group 15 of the periodic table. This element exists in several forms, of which white and red are the best known. White phosphorus is definitely the more exciting of the two.

Is bromine a metal?

Smelly element No. 35, bromine, is a fairly abundant element but has a rare property: it is the only nonmetal to exist in liquid form at room temperature, and one of only two elements (the other being mercury) that is liquid at room temperature and pressure.

Which food is high in phosphorus?

Phosphorus is found in high amounts in protein foods such as milk and milk products and meat and alternatives, such as beans, lentils and nuts. Grains, especially whole grains provide phosphorus. Phosporus is found in smaller amounts in vegetables and fruit.

What is the role of phosphorus in the body?

Function. The main function of phosphorus is in the formation of bones and teeth. It plays an important role in how the body uses carbohydrates and fats. It is also needed for the body to make protein for the growth, maintenance, and repair of cells and tissues.

Is phosphorus ionic or covalent?

Most phosphorus compounds exhibit covalent properties. Ionic compounds, such as sodium phosphide (Na3P), are few because the formation of P³⁻ ions from P atoms requires a considerable amount of energy.

Is phosphorus an inorganic compound?

Inorganic phosphorus is essential for every known form of life. Phosphorus forms many compounds such as metal phosphates, phosphides, oxides, halides, and oxyacids. As phosphates, they play a major role in biological molecules. The phosphorus containing compounds are mainly used as fertilizers.

What is phosphorus element or compound?

Phosphorus is a chemical element with symbol P and atomic number 15. Classified as a nonmetal, Phosphorus is a solid at room temperature.
