What is franklinite used for?

THE MINERAL FRANKLINITE

Franklinite is one of the minerals found at Franklin, New Jersey, a world famous locality that has produced many formerly unknown and exotic mineral species. It is found in large enough quantity to serve as a ore of zinc and manganese, two important strategic and industrial metals.

How is franklinite formed?

As the rocks descended, the heat and pressure increased, gradually changing (metamorphosing) the limestone into marble, and the metal-rich layers into the zinc ore minerals (franklinite, willemite, zincite) we see today within the Franklin Marble at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum.

Where is franklinite found?

Franklinite is named after the locality of Franklin, New Jersey, where it is found. To date, this mineral is found only at Franklin and neighboring Ogdensburg, New Jersey. There are no other localities for Franklinite, but at these two localities it is quite abundant.

Is Franklinite magnetic?

franklinite (zinc iron oxide, ZnFe₂O₄), jacobsite (manganese iron oxide, MnFe₂O₄), and trevorite (nickel iron oxide, NiFe₂O₄). All are magnetic, although franklinite and jacobsite are only weakly so; magnetite, which frequently has distinct north and south poles, has been known for this property since about 500…

How common is pyrite?

It has a chemical composition of iron sulfide (FeS₂) and is the most common sulfide mineral. It forms at high and low temperatures and occurs, usually in small quantities, in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks worldwide. Pyrite is so common that many geologists would consider it to be a ubiquitous mineral.

Are garnets crystals?

Garnet is a bright red, fiery crystal of passion and is thought to be one of the oldest crystals used for spiritual protection throughout history. Its name comes from the Latin granatum meaning pomegranate, due to how the crystal represents the seeds of this delicious fruit.

What is the crystal structure of garnet?

Garnets generally produce symmetrical, cube-based crystals. The most common crystal shape among this group is the rhombic dodecahedron, a twelve-sided crystal with diamond shaped (rhombic) faces. The basic shape is a trademark for garnets, for no other crystal shape is so closely associated with a single mineral group.

What element is Garnet?
