Septic Shock Syndrome Septic shock in humans is caused primarily by endotoxins released during severe Gram-negative bacterial infections and carries a staggering 30–50% mortality rate (Danner et al., 1991).

Is endotoxic and septic shock same?

Endotoxin, or more accurately termed bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is recognized as the most potent microbial mediator implicated in the pathogenesis of sepsis and septic shock.

What is another name for septic shock?

Terms that are often used in place of sepsis are bacteremia, septicemia, and blood poisoning.

Can sepsis cause hemorrhagic shock?

Acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are common manifestations of MODS or MOFS. However, other conditions besides sepsis can cause MODS, including trauma, burns, and severe hemorrhagic shock.

What is the meaning of endotoxin shock?

Endotoxic shock results from a severe, generalized inflammatory response induced by bloodstream infection with gram-negative bacteria.

Sepsis and Septic Shock, Animation.

What causes endotoxic shock?

Any type of bacteria can cause septic shock. Fungi and (rarely) viruses may also cause the condition. Toxins released by the bacteria or fungi may cause tissue damage. This may lead to low blood pressure and poor organ function.

What is septic shock vs sepsis?

Sepsis is a clinical syndrome of life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated response to infection. In septic shock, there is critical reduction in tissue perfusion; acute failure of multiple organs, including the lungs, kidneys, and liver, can occur.

What is hemorrhagic shock?

Hemorrhagic shock is a form of hypovolemic shock in which severe blood loss leads to inadequate oxygen delivery at the cellular level. If hemorrhage continues unchecked, death quickly follows.

What type of shock is septic shock?

Septic shock is the most common form of distributive shock and is characterized by considerable mortality (treated, around 30%; untreated, probably >80%). In the United States, this is the leading cause of noncardiac death in intensive care units (ICUs).

Can you recover from septic shock?

Most people recover from mild sepsis, but the mortality rate for septic shock is about 40%. Also, an episode of severe sepsis places you at higher risk of future infections.

Is septic shock fatal?

Septic shock is a severe and potentially fatal condition that occurs when sepsis leads to life threatening low blood pressure. Sepsis develops when the body has an overwhelming response to infection.

Does septic shock cause brain damage?

Brain dysfunction is a frequent and severe complication of septic shock, as it occurs in up to 60% of patients [1, 2] and is associated with increased mortality [3] and long-term cognitive impairment [4, 5].

Why does LPS cause septic shock?

LPS can induce massive production of cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6, by immune and nonimmune cells, thereby leading to inflammatory tissue injuries and finally multiorgan failure, the clinical hallmarks of septic shock (3–5).

What is septic shock?

There's a significant drop in blood pressure that can lead to respiratory or heart failure, stroke, dysfunction of other organs, and possibly death.

What toxin causes septic shock?

Septic shock is a serious case of sepsis, where the body goes into shock (life-threatening low blood pressure). TSS is a special form of septic shock caused by the toxins of the Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria. Toxic shock syndrome can occur when women use tampons, especially "super-absorbent" ones.

What are the different types of hemorrhagic shock?

Hypovolemic shock, the most common type, results from a loss of circulating blood volume from clinical etiologies, such as penetrating and blunt trauma, gastrointestinal bleeding, and obstetrical bleeding.

How do you classify hemorrhagic shock?

1. Class 1: Volume loss up to 15% of total blood volume, approximately 750 mL. ...
2. Class 2: Volume loss from 15% to 30% of total blood volume, from 750 mL to 1500 mL. ...
3. Class 3: Volume loss from 30% to 40% of total blood volume, from 1500 mL to 2000 mL. ...
4. Class 4: Volume loss over 40% of total blood volume.

Is hemorrhagic shock and hypovolemic shock the same thing?

Hypovolemic shock occurs as a result of either blood loss or extracellular fluid loss. Hemorrhagic shock is hypovolemic shock from blood loss. Traumatic injury is by far the most common cause of hemorrhagic shock.

What happens if you go into septic shock?

Complications of septic shock can include: inability of the lungs to take in enough oxygen (respiratory failure) the heart not being able to pump enough blood around the body (heart failure) kidney failure or injury.

How long does it take to fully recover from septic shock?

In mild sepsis, complete recovery is possible at a quicker rate. On average, the recovery period from this condition takes about three to ten days, depending on the appropriate treatment response, including medication.

How does sepsis become septic shock?

In a typical infection, your immune system releases cytokines to dilate blood vessels at the infection site. This response allows more blood to bring infection-fighting white blood cells to the area. Sepsis worsens into septic shock when blood pressure plummets as a result.

What is EGDT in relation to sepsis?

Background. EGDT (Early Goal Directed Therapy) or some portion of EGDT has been shown to decrease mortality secondary to sepsis and septic shock. Objective. Our study aims to assess the effect of adopting this approach in the emergency department on in-hospital mortality secondary to sepsis/septic shock in Lebanon.

What are the two types of sepsis?

There are three stages of sepsis: sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock. Sepsis can happen while you're still in the hospital recovering from a procedure, but this isn't always the case. It's important to seek immediate medical attention if you have any of the below symptoms.

What bacteria is the most common cause of septic shock?

However, over the past 25 years it has been shown that gram-positive bacteria are the most common cause of sepsis [103]. Some of the most frequently isolated bacteria in sepsis are Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Streptococcus pyogenes (S.
