How was penicillin discovered?
In 1928 Dr Alexander Fleming returned from a holiday to find mould growing on a Petri dish of Staphylococcus bacteria. He noticed the mould seemed to be preventing the bacteria around it from growing. He soon identified that the mould produced a self-defence chemical that could kill bacteria.
Who actually discovered penicillin?
According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: 'Alexander Fleming had 'discovered' penicillin, essentially by accident, in 1928, but he and his colleagues found that the culture extract containing penicillin was unstable and the antibiotic was impossible to isolate in a pure state, and so they effectively ...
Why was penicillin discovery so important?
The discovery of penicillin was a major medical breakthrough. Penicillin was the first effective antibiotic that could be used to kill bacteria. This meant that cures for serious illnesses were possible even if the patient had the disease.
Why did Alexander Fleming discover penicillin?
An uncovered Petri dish near an open window became contaminated with mold. Fleming realized that the bacteria near the mold were dying. He isolated the mold and identified it as Penicillium genus, which he found to be effective against all Gram-positive pathogens.

How did penicillin change history?
The discovery of penicillin changed the world of medicine enormously. With its development, infections that were previously severe and often fatal, like bacterial endocarditis, bacterial meningitis and pneumococcal pneumonia, could be easily treated.

Fleming accidentally discovered penicillin in 1928, when he returned to the lab to find that a green mold had contaminated a petri dish that he'd forgotten to cover.
Where was penicillin first used?
The purified compound (penicillin F) was isolated in 1940 by a research team led by Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain at the University of Oxford. Fleming first used the purified penicillin to treat streptococcal meningitis in 1942.

Was the discovery of penicillin an accident?
Penicillin Discovered—by Accident
Somehow, in preparing the culture, a Penicillium mold spore had been accidentally introduced into the medium—perhaps coming in through a window, or more likely floating up a stairwell from the lab below where various molds were being cultured.
Who discovered amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin was discovered by scientists at Beecham Research Laboratories in 1972. The narrow spectrum of antimicrobial activity of the penicillins, led to the search for derivatives of penicillin which could treat a wider range of infections.
What was penicillin first extracted from?
After isolating the mold and identifying it as belonging to the Penicillium genus, Fleming obtained an extract from the mold, naming its active agent penicillin. He determined that penicillin had an antibacterial effect on staphylococci and other gram-positive pathogens. Fleming published his findings in 1929 (3).
