CNS myelin is produced by special cells called oligodendrocytes. PNS myelin is produced by Schwann cells. The two types of myelin are chemically different, but they both perform the same function — to promote efficient transmission of a nerve impulse along the axon.

Which cells secrete myelin in CNS?

Schwann cells make myelin in the peripheral nervous system (PNS: nerves) and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS: brain and spinal cord). In the PNS, one Schwann cell forms a single myelin sheath (Figure 1A).

Is myelin secreted?

Rather than being a secretion of the axon, myelin was found to be a thick wrapping of highly compacted layers of cell membrane spun around the axon by nonneuronal cells (glia).

Where does the myelin come from?

The myelin membranes originate from and are a part of the Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and the oligodendroglial cells in the central nervous system (CNS) (see Chap. 1). Each myelin-generating cell furnishes myelin for only one segment of any given axon.

How myelin sheaths are formed in the CNS?

Myelin is formed by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS). Each Schwann cell forms a single myelin sheath around an axon. ... Myelin itself forms by the spiral wrapping around an axon of an enormously expanded glial plasma membrane that then compacts.

2-Minute Neuroscience: Myelin

How does myelination differ in the CNS and PNS?

Myelination provides the electrical insulation of neurons. In CNS (central nervous system) oligodendrocyte is responsible for myelination of neuronal axons. These cells have processes that wrap around the axons to form myelin sheath. ... In PNS (peripheral nervous system) myelin sheath is formed by Schwann cell.

What function do astrocytes play in the CNS?

Astrocytes are the most numerous cell type within the central nervous system (CNS) and perform a variety of tasks, from axon guidance and synaptic support, to the control of the blood brain barrier and blood flow.

What produces myelin in the brain and spinal cord?

Myelin is made by two different types of support cells. In the central nervous system (CNS) — the brain and spinal cord — cells called oligodendrocytes wrap their branch-like extensions around axons to create a myelin sheath. In the nerves outside of the spinal cord, Schwann cells produce myelin.

How does the presence or absence of myelin sheaths in the CNS determine the color of this tissue?

The myelin sheaths around axons of the CNS give this tissue a white color; areas of the CNS that contain a high concentration of axons thus form the white matter (myelinated). The gray matter of the CNS is composed of high concentrations of cell bodies and dendrites, which lack myelin sheaths.

How do oligodendrocytes produce myelin?

Oligodendrocytes do this by creating the myelin sheath, a white and shiny fatty substance, which is composed by 80% of lipid and 20% of protein. ... In order to do so, the oligodendrocyte extends parts of its membrane to the axon and twists around it thereby forming a wrap of myelin sheaths around each axon.

Where does Saltatory conduction occur?

Saltatory conduction occurs widely in the myelinated nerve fibers of vertebrates, but was later discovered in a pair of medial myelinated giant fibers of Fenneropenaeus chinensis and Marsupenaeus japonicus shrimp, as well as in a median giant fiber of an earthworm.

What is the myelin sheath?

Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord. ... This myelin sheath allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells. If myelin is damaged, these impulses slow down. This can cause diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

Do Schwann cells secrete myelin?

Schwann cell, also called neurilemma cell, any of the cells in the peripheral nervous system that produce the myelin sheath around neuronal axons.

Are Schwann cells in the CNS or PNS?

Central nervous system (CNS) is composed of two major cell types: neuron and glia. ... Consistently, the CNS houses oligodendrocytes for myelin synthesis. On the other hand, Schwann cells are the myelinating cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS).

Are there Schwann cells in the CNS?

Schwann cells are excluded from the CNS during development by the glial limiting membrane, an area of astrocytic specialisation present at the nerve root transitional zone, and at blood vessels in the neuropil. ... Extensive Schwann cell CNS myelination may have therapeutic significance in human myelin disease.

Which type of glia cell produces myelin for cells in the brain?

Oligodendrocytes. Oligodendrocytes provide support to axons of neurons in the central nervous system, particularly those that travel long distances within the brain. They produce a fatty substance called myelin, which is wrapped around axons as a layer of insulation.

Which cells produce myelin in the brain and spinal cord quizlet?

Cells that provide support for the neurons to grow on and around, deliver nutrients to neurons, produce myelin to coat axons, clean up waste products and dead neurons, influence information processing, & during prenatal development, influence the generation of new neurons; two special types of glial cells called ...

Do glial cells produce myelin?

The glial cells that produce myelin in the central nervous system are called oligodendrocytes. In the peripheral nervous system, the myelin producing cells are called Schwann cells. ... The myelin insulates the nerve axon so that electrical signals can be passed along the axon quickly and reliably.

Do astrocytes form myelin?

Astrocytes Provide Lipids for Myelin Sheath Production.

What is microglia function?

Microglia cells are the immune cells of the central nervous system and consequently play important roles in brain infections and inflammation. ... In the mature brain, microglia can respond to changes in sensory activity and can influence neuronal activity acutely and over the long term.

Do astrocytes produce myelin?

Astrocytes Provide Lipids for Myelin Sheath Production

Still consistent with their implication in myelination, astrocytes were also proposed to supply lactate to oligodendrocytes. Lactate constitutes a source of energy and a precursor of lipid synthesis including cholesterol altogether necessary for myelin production.

What is myelin How does the myelination process differ in the CNS and PNS quizlet?

Myelin protects and electrically insulates fibers. It also increases the transmission speed of nerve impulses. In the PNS, myelin sheaths are formed by Schwann cells. In the CNS, oligodendrocytes form the myelin sheath.

What is the difference between myelin and myelin sheath?

Myelin is a lipid-rich substance that surrounds some axons within the central and peripheral nervous systems. The sheath is formed by wrapping multiple layers of the cellular membrane (mainly lipoprotein) of the myelin-producing cells.

What is the myelination process?

Myelination is characterized by the acquisition of the highly specialized myelin membrane around axons. It begins before birth within the caudal brain stem and progresses rostrally to the forebrain, with the most rapid and dramatic period of human central myelination within the first 2 years of postnatal life.
