The innermost layer of the vein is the tunica intima. This layer consists of flat epithelial cells. These cells allow fluid to flow smoothly and are interspersed with valves that ensure the flow continues in one direction. This continuous layer of epithelial cells holds cells and fluid within the vessel lumen.

What is the function of the tunica intima of elastic arteries?

The thin outer layer of the tunica intima contains a small amount of areolar connective tissue that consists primarily of elastic fibers to provide the vessel with additional flexibility; it also contains some collagenous fibers to provide additional strength.

What makes up tunica intima?

The tunica intima consists of a layer of endothelial cells lining the lumen of the vessel, as well as a subendothelial layer made up of mostly loose connective tissue. ... Finally, the tunica adventitia is primarily composed of loose connective tissue made up of fibroblasts and associated collagen fibers.

Why does the tunica intima have a smooth surface?

The simple squamous epithelium provides a smooth surface for the blood to "slide past." The tunica intima is continuous with the endocardium, makes-up the capillaries and is collectively referred to as the endothelium. This is the middle layer. It is made of smooth muscle and elastic fibers.

What does tunica media control?

The tunica media is characterized by the presence of concentric layers of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and elastin-rich extracellular matrix. It is the final recipient of signals regulating the vascular tone and is separated from adventitia by the external elastic lamina.

Why is the tunica media responsible for vasoconstriction?

Tunica Media

It is generally the thickest layer in arteries, and it is much thicker in arteries than it is in veins. ... Specifically in arteries, vasoconstriction decreases blood flow as the smooth muscle in the walls of the tunica media contracts, making the lumen narrower and increasing blood pressure.

What is the composition and function of tunica media?

The middle layer, the tunica media, is primarily smooth muscle and is usually the thickest layer. It not only provides support for the vessel but also changes vessel diameter to regulate blood flow and blood pressure.

How is tunica intima different from the layers of your blood vessels?

description. The tunica intima, the innermost layer, consists of an inner surface of smooth endothelium covered by a surface of elastic tissues. The tunica media, or middle coat, is thicker in arteries, particularly in the large arteries, and consists of smooth muscle cells intermingled with elastic fibres.…

Does tunica intima have smooth muscle?

The tunica intima is composed of a flattened, smooth layer of cells, called endothelial cells, which line the lumen. The endothelial cells are supported by subendothelial stroma composed of low numbers of fibrocytes and smooth muscles, elastic fibers, and a small amount of collagen.

What is the function of the tunica externa?

Function. The tunica externa provides basic structural support to blood vessels. It prevents vessels from expanding too much from internal blood pressure, particularly arteries. It is also relevant in controlling vascular flow in the lungs.

How can the tunica intima be damaged?

Disorders of the cardiovascular system

Damage to the tunica intima of the cranial mesenteric artery and/or the aorta leads to damage which may either result in narrowing of the arterial lumen or to a localized (but often severe and extensive) arteritis surrounding variable numbers of larvae.

What are Subendothelial cells?

The subendothelial layer contains dense irregular fibroblasts intermixed with collagen and elastic fibers and occasional smooth muscle cells. Elastic fibers are abundant within the subendocardium of the atria. ... The subendothelial layer is composed of fibroblasts with abundant elastic and collagen fibers.

What are tiny connecting bridges between arterioles and venules?

Arterioles connect with even smaller blood vessels called capillaries. Through the thin walls of the capillaries, oxygen and nutrients pass from blood into tissues, and waste products pass from tissues into blood. From the capillaries, blood passes into venules, then into veins to return to the heart.

How does fibers arranged in aorta?

The pulmonary arteries, the aorta, and its branches together comprise the body's system of elastic arteries. In these large arteries, the amount of elastic tissue is considerable and the smooth muscle fiber cells are arranged in 5 to 7 layers in both circular and longitudinal directions.

What is the purpose of the elastic fibers in elastic arteries?

The main components of elastic fibers, elastin and fibrillin-containing microfibrils play a structural and mechanical role in the arteries and their essential function is to provide elasticity and resilience to the tissues.

What is the function of Arteriole?

Structure and Function

Arterioles are considered as the primary resistance vessels as they distribute blood flow into capillary beds. Arterioles provide approximately 80% of the total resistance to blood flow through the body.

How many layers does the tunica intima have?

It is made up of one layer of endothelial cells and is supported by an internal elastic lamina. The endothelial cells are in direct contact with the blood flow. The three layers of a blood vessel are an inner layer (the tunica intima), a middle layer (the tunica media), and an outer layer (the tunica externa).

Is the internal elastic lamina part of the tunica intima?

The internal elastic lamina or internal elastic lamella is a layer of elastic tissue that forms the outermost part of the tunica intima of blood vessels. It separates tunica intima from tunica media.

What does the tunica adventitia do?

circulatory system

The tunica adventitia, the outermost layer, is the strongest of the three layers. It is composed of collagenous and elastic fibres. (Collagen is a connective-tissue protein.) The tunica adventitia provides a limiting barrier, protecting the vessel from overexpansion.

How do veins prevent backflow?

As muscles move, they squeeze the veins that run through them. Veins contain a series of one-way valves. As the vein is squeezed, it pushes blood through the valves, which then close to prevent backflow.

Which vessel has only the tunica intima layer?

Capillaries have only a tunica intima layer. The tunica intima is a thin layer composed of a simple squamous epithelium known as endothelium and a small amount of connective tissue. The tunica media is a thicker area composed of variable amounts of smooth muscle and connective tissue.

What anatomical feature is unique to veins?

Just like the arterial system, three layers make up the vein walls. But unlike the arteries, the venous pressure is low. Veins are thin-walled and are less elastic. This feature permits the veins to hold a very high percentage of the blood in circulation.

How does the tunica media differ in arteries and veins?

The middle layer ( tunica media ) is thicker and contains more contractile tissue in arteries than in veins. It consists of circularly arranged elastic fibers, connective tissue, and smooth muscle cells.

Do venules have valves?

Venules. ... Valves are found usually in the area of anastomosis of small to large venules and also within larger venules unassociated with branching points. The free edges of the valves are always directed away from the smaller vessel and toward the larger, and serve to direct blood flow toward the deeper venous system.

Do arterioles have valves?

Arterioles face a smaller blood pressure, meaning they don't need to be as elastic. Arterioles account for most of the resistance in the pulmonary circulation because they are more rigid than larger arteries. ... They contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood.
