Most commonly, peracids are generated by treating the corresponding carboxylic acid with hydrogen peroxide: RCO₂H + H₂O₂ ⇌ RCO₃H + H₂O. A related reaction involves treatment of the carboxylic anhydride: (RCO)₂O + H₂O₂ → RCO₃H + RCO₂H.

How do you cook Peracids?

Peracetic acid is produced industrially by the autoxidation of acetaldehyde: O₂ + CH₃CHO → CH₃CO₃H. It forms upon treatment of acetic acid with hydrogen peroxide with a strong acid catalyst: H₂O₂ + CH₃CO₂H ⇌ CH₃CO₃H + H₂O.

Peracetic acid is very aggressive to soft metals such as iron, copper, zinc and brass. All these metals corrode quickly and release transition metal ions into solution. Transition metals catalyze the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) that the product also contains. Oxygen gas is produced.

Is peracetic acid harmful?

Peracetic Acid Dangers

Peracetic acid in low concentrations can irritate skin and eyes, as well as cause throat and breathing difficulties. However, in concentrated form, it can cause serious eye and skin damage.

What reacts with peracetic acid?

When peracetic acid dissolves in water, it disintegrates to hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid, which will fall apart to water, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Peracetic acid degradation products are non-toxic and can easily dissolve in water.

Can peracetic acid eat through glass?

These acids are capable of dissolving almost anything – wax, rocks, metals (even platinum), and yes, even glass.

What does salt and peroxide make?

The mixture of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide produces a strong oxidizer called sodium peroxide and can result in an exothermic mist from the onset of high temperatures and heat from the decomposition of incompatible mixtures causing a severe thermal hazard.
