A suspending agent is a liquid in which a solid substance can be held in suspension. The drug is held in the suspension by a suspending agent, and does not settle at the bottom. If the tablet is dissolved in a suspending agent, this will help suspend any insoluble components in the liquid.

What are suspending agents with examples?

The most common suspending agents are aqueous biological polymers, including methylcellulose (MC), sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC). A range of viscosities of suspending agents is available with different molecular weights.

What is the effect of suspending agent on sedimentation volume?

As the concentration of the suspending agent increases sedimentation volume and viscosity of the suspensions increased. There was faster rate of sedimentation of dispersed particles in suspensions containing 0.5% and 1% w/v of suspending agent.

What are the types of suspending agents?

Suspending agents are grouped into three classes: synthetic, semi synthetic and the natural polysaccharides, in which class acacia, tragacanth and starch belong to the latter class (Mbang et al., 2004; Mahmud et al., 2010).

Why suspending agents are used?

 They help in lowering the sedimentation rate of particles in suspension. ...  They usually prevent caking at the base of an suspension . It could be resuspendend by agitation.  It is majorly used as an excipients to help active pharmaceutical ingredients stay suspended in formulation.

How are suspensions prepared?

Pharmaceutical suspensions are usually prepared either by direct incorporation/ dispersion method or by precipitation method. Suspensions can also be formulated using controlled flocculation method.

What is suspension sedimentation?

Sedimentation is the process of allowing particles in suspension in water to settle out of the suspension under the effect of gravity. The particles that settle out from the suspension become sediment, and in water treatment is known as sludge.

What is stability of suspension?

It is important to understand that suspensions are kinetically stable, but thermodynamically unstable, system. Physical stability is defined as the condition in which the particles remain uniformly distributed throughout the dispersion without any signs of sedimentation.

What is suspension in pharmacy?

A pharmaceutical suspension is a coarse dispersion of insoluble solid particles in a liquid medium. The particle diameter in a suspension is usually greater than 0.5 µm. ... Suspensions are an important class of pharmaceutical dosage forms.

What is the suspension and suspending agent?

: a substance (such as carrageenan, xanthan gum, or cellulose ether) that is added to fluids to promote particle suspension or dispersion and reduce sedimentation All these drinks can contain preservatives, and drinks other than juices can contain additives to colour, flavour and sweeten.

What factors affect suspension?

1. Dispersed phase content. The content of the dispersed phase φ is the most important physical parameter that affects the viscosity of dispersions. ...
2. Particle shape. ...
3. Particle size and size distribution. ...
4. Temperature.

What are suspending and emulsifying agent?

The key difference between suspending agent and emulsifying agent is that suspending agents are useful for the stabilization of suspensions, whereas emulsifying agents are useful in stabilizing emulsions. Suspensions and emulsions are two different substance.

What are 3 types of suspension?

There are three basic types of suspension components: linkages, springs, and shock absorbers. The linkages are the bars and brackets that support the wheels, springs and shock absorbers. Springs cushion the vehicle by dampening shock loads from bumps and holes in the road.

Can suspension be given IV?

Drugs in the form of suspensions or oily solutions cannot generally be given intravenously. In common with all parenteral injections, products should be sterile, free of pyrogens, buffered to physiological pH and isotonic.

What are the advantages of suspension?

The suspension system absorbs the impact of the imperfections on the road to not only stabilize the car but also the passengers inside. The control arms of your vehicle's suspension system allow your tires to smoothly go up and down in a controlled manner.

What is flocculation in suspensions?

Flocculation is a process whereby small particles in suspension are caused to aggregate, giving large clusters (flocs) that are much more easily separated than the original particles. The process is in widespread use in many industrial applications.

What is suspension range?

 Suspensions are the biphasic liquid dosage form of medicaments in which the finely divided solid particles.  The range of solid particles in suspension from 0.5 to 5.0 micron.

How is suspension load measured?

Streamflow is measured by making a discharge measurement. Suspended sediment, the kind of sediment that is moved in the water itself, is measured by collecting bottles of water and sending them to a lab to determine the concentration.

What are the 4 types of sedimentation process?

Type 1 – Dilutes, non-flocculent, free-settling (every particle settles independently.) Type 2 – Dilute, flocculent (particles can flocculate as they settle). Type 3 – Concentrated suspensions, zone settling, hindered settling (sludge thickening). Type 4 – Concentrated suspensions, compression (sludge thickening).

What causes suspended sediment?

Runoff from agricultural fields, urban areas, and construction sites can carry away soil, producing cloudy or muddy water. Soil in the water, called suspended sediment, blocks out the sunlight that bottom-dwelling plants in lakes and rivers need to survive.

Which suspending agent is used in the formulation of suspension?

Xanthan gum in drug delivery applications

XG is widely used as a suspending agent and stabilizer in suspension due to its safety properties in food and drug applications.

How does a suspending agents increases the viscosity of the liquid?

By reducing particle size, by increasing the viscosity, and by increasing the density of the external phase, we may retard settling. Suspending agents are physiologically inert substances which increase viscosity when added to suspensions.

What are ingredients used in suspension?

The most commonly used vehicle for the formulation of pharmaceutical suspensions is purified water. In a few instances, viscous nonaqueous solvents, such as propylene glycol and polyethylene glycols, are used as vehicles to impart stability to suspended drug particles.

What is suspension mixture?

A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture of a finely distributed solid in a liquid. The solid is not dissolved in the liquid, as is the case with a mixture of salt and water. Suspension. Examples of Suspensions.
