Rheumatic fever. A complication of strep throat, rheumatic fever can damage the mitral valve. Rheumatic fever is the most common cause of mitral valve stenosis. It can damage the mitral valve by causing the flaps to thicken or fuse.

Why does rheumatic fever cause mitral stenosis?

When your mitral valve isn't functioning correctly, blood and pressure build up, the left atrium enlarges, and fluid enters the lungs. The most common cause of mitral valve stenosis is rheumatic fever — a complication of strep throat. This infection can scar the mitral valve, causing it to narrow.

How does rheumatic fever affect the mitral valve?

Although rheumatic fever can affect any heart valve, it most commonly affects the mitral valve which lies between the two chambers of the left side of the heart. The damage can cause valve stenosis, valve regurgitation and/or damage to the heart muscle.

Does rheumatoid arthritis cause mitral stenosis?

Regurgitation is the most common form of valve disease, although stenosis has been reported (21, 24-26). The mitral valve was selectively involved in our RA patients, and mitral valve disease was significantly more common in the RA group than in the control group.

Can rheumatic fever cause mitral regurgitation?

Rheumatic fever — a complication of untreated strep throat — can damage the mitral valve, leading to mitral valve regurgitation early or later in life.

Does rheumatic fever cause heart murmur?

A recent history of strep infection or rheumatic fever is key to the diagnosis of rheumatic heart disease. Symptoms of rheumatic fever vary and typically begin 1 to 6 weeks after a bout of strep throat. People with rheumatic heart disease may have a murmur or rub that may be heard during a routine physical exam.

Can rheumatic fever cause aortic stenosis?

Rheumatic fever can lead to scarring of the tissue in the aortic valve, causing the valve to become constricted and narrowed. This scarring can also increase the likelihood of calcium deposits building up along the valve — a major risk factor for aortic valve stenosis in adulthood.

Does rheumatoid arthritis affect the heart valves?

The valvular lesions caused by rheumatoid arthritis have been known for a long time. The valves may be affected by unspecific inflammatory changes or, specifically, by rheumatoid granulomas identical with subcutaneous nodules that lead to the malfunctioning of the aortic or the mitral valve.

Can rheumatoid arthritis cause cardiomyopathy?

The coexistence of rheumatoid arthritis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy could be connected with the human lymphocyte antigen DR4, which is common in both conditions. Further studies are necessary to assess whether a true association of the above diseases exists.

Can rheumatoid arthritis affect your heart?

People with RA are almost twice as likely to develop heart disease as those without the condition. Having RA makes you more likely to experience a serious cardiovascular event like a heart attack or stroke. You're not destined to have heart troubles just because your joints are inflamed.

Does rheumatic fever cause heart problems?

Serious Complications Include Long-term Heart Damage

If rheumatic fever is not treated promptly, long-term heart damage (called rheumatic heart disease) may occur. Rheumatic heart disease weakens the valves between the chambers of the heart. Severe rheumatic heart disease can require heart surgery and result in death.

Which valves does rheumatic heart disease affect?

Rheumatic (pronounced roo-MAT-ik) heart disease is a condition in which rheumatic fever damaged the heart. Typically, this long-term damage happens to the mitral valve, aortic valve or both. This damage may cause a valve to “leak” or become narrow over time.

How does mitral valve stenosis cause atrial fibrillation?

For example, mitral valve stenosis results in an obstruction to blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle causing the pressure to increase in the left atrium. As a result, the heart enlarges, and atrial fibrillation can occur.

What does rheumatic fever do to your heart?

Rheumatic fever can cause permanent damage to the heart, including damaged heart valves and heart failure. Treatments can reduce damage from inflammation, lessen pain and other symptoms, and prevent the recurrence of rheumatic fever.

Why does mitral valve stenosis cause hemoptysis?

The symptoms of patients presenting with mitral stenosis are secondary to decreased blood flow over the valve with subsequent congestion and increased pressures in the pulmonary circulation [18]. Hemoptysis, though less common, is due to increased pressures causing rupture of pulmonary vessels [18].

How does RA affect the heart and lungs?

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition which can cause inflammation to develop in other parts of your body, such as the: lungs – inflammation of the lungs or lung lining can lead to pleurisy or pulmonary fibrosis, which can cause chest pain, a persistent cough and shortness of breath.

Is rheumatic fever and rheumatoid arthritis related?

Although the symptoms of rheumatic fever are similar to those of RA, the two diseases are not related. Rheumatic fever is a severe inflammatory disease that develops from complications of strep throat. Rheumatic fever mostly affects children between the ages of 5 and 15.

Does rheumatoid arthritis affect the heart and lungs?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) doesn't affect just your joints. It can also damage the tissue surrounding the joints, as well as your eyes, heart, and, most important, lungs. Lung complications from rheumatoid arthritis can be serious and even cause death.

Can RA cause tachycardia?

2017;38:1717-1727. Sudden cardiac death is typically associated with the development of a malignant ventricular tachycardia, leading first to ventricular fibrillation and then to asystole. Compared with the general population, patients with RA have a higher incidence of sudden cardiac death.

Can RA cause aortic regurgitation?

Aortic incompetence secondary to connective tissue diseases including rheumatoid arthritis has a relatively accelerated course rapidly leading to severe left ventricular failure. Our patients are typical of this accelerated natural history.

What type of murmur is mitral stenosis?

The diastolic murmur of mitral stenosis is of low pitch, rumbling in character, and best heard at the apex with the patient in the left lateral position. It commences after the opening snap of the mitral valve, and the duration of the murmur correlates with the severity of the stenosis.

What murmur does rheumatic fever cause?

The Carey Coombs Murmur occurs during acute rheumatic fever. Mitral valvulitis can occur causing thickening of the leaflets. A murmur is created by increased blood flow across the thickened mitral valve. This can be distinguished from rheumatic mitral valve stenosis by the absence of an opening snap.

What causes mitral valve stenosis?

Nearly all cases of mitral valve stenosis are caused by rheumatic fever, which can follow an untreated strep throat infection. But many people who have mitral valve stenosis don't realize that they had rheumatic fever. Other less common causes include: A congenital (from birth) heart defect.

Why does mitral stenosis cause right ventricular hypertrophy?

Mitral stenosis impedes left atrial emptying, increases left atrial and pulmonary venous pressure, and thus causes pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension results in right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH), implying that the disease is long lasting and needs interventional treatment.

How does mitral stenosis cause left ventricular failure?

If atrial fibrillation develops, the atrial kick is lost. Thus, in severe mitral stenosis, the left ventricular filling is dependent on the atrial kick. With the loss of the atrial kick, there is a decrease in cardiac output and sudden development of congestive heart failure.
