Global Climate Change. comes from precipitation. Too little precipitation can result in dry soil, shallow streams, and shortages of municipal water supplies. ... For example, too much rain or snowmelt (water from melted snow) at one time can lead to flooding.

What is precipitation and how does it affect weather?

Precipitation is any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the Earth. It comes in many forms, like rain, sleet, and snow. Along with evaporation and condensation, precipitation is one of the three major parts of the global water cycle.

What are effects of precipitation?

Excessive precipitation can also degrade water quality, harming human health and ecosystems. Stormwater runoff, which often includes pollutants like heavy metals, pesticides, nitrogen, and phosphorus, can end up in lakes, streams, and bays, damaging aquatic ecosystems and lowering water quality for human uses.

How does relief precipitation affect climate?

The shape of the land ('relief')

Mountains receive more rainfall than low lying areas because as air is forced over the higher ground it cools, causing moist air to condense and fall out as rainfall. ... This happens because as altitude increases, air becomes thinner and is less able to absorb and retain heat.

What factors affect the climate?

• Elevation or Altitude effect climate. Normally, climatic conditions become colder as altitude increases. ...
• Prevailing global wind patterns. ...
• Topography. ...
• Effects of Geography. ...
• Surface of the Earth. ...
• Climate change over time.

Weather: How Does High and Low Pressure Affect Precipitation?

How relief affects weather and climate?

Relief can influence the amount of precipitation an area receives. When air is forced to rise over a mountain range, it cools and the moisture within it condenses. Clouds form and produce rain. This type of rainfall is called orographic rainfall or relief rainfall.

How does rain affect the environment?

The Effect of Rainfall on Soil and Plants

Excessive rainfall can damage plants and compact the soil. When soil becomes compacted, erosion eventually occurs. Additionally, too much rain leads to reduced soil oxygen, and this can lead to root loss that stifles a plant's growth.

How does precipitation affect the topology of the earth?

In the case of air flowing over the mountains, precipitation is concentrated on the windward facing side and a rain-shadow occurs on the lee side. ... If air cannot flow over the mountains, more complicated flow patterns and precipitation distributions can result. As air approaches the topography, it slows down.

What is precipitation explain the effects of precipitation?

Precipitation means water falls in the Solid or liquid state from the clouds to the earth surface. Snow, hailstorms, rainfall are the major forms of precipitation . ... Floods may occur because of heavy rainfall causing loss of life and property. But if the precipitation does not take place, then conditions of drought arise.

Is precipitation good or bad?

Rainfall and other precipitation washes nutrients from human activities like agriculture and fossil fuel combustion into rivers and lakes. When these nutrients overload waterways, a process called eutrophication, the results can be dangerous.

What does precipitation in weather mean?

These are different types of precipitation, but what does 'precipitation' mean? When we talk about precipitation, we are talking about water that is falling out of the sky, this could be rain, drizzle, snow, sleet, hail or something rarer!

What is precipitation used for in weather?

Precipitation is a major component of the water cycle, and is responsible for depositing fresh water on the planet. Approximately 505,000 cubic kilometres (121,000 cu mi) of water falls as precipitation each year: 398,000 cubic kilometres (95,000 cu mi) over oceans and 107,000 cubic kilometres (26,000 cu mi) over land.

In what ways does precipitation occurs on the Earth?

1) Precipitation occurs when water vapor in the atmosphere condenses into either liquid or solid forms. Precipitation is water released from clouds in the form of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or hail. It is the primary connection in the water cycle that provides for the delivery of atmospheric water to the Earth.

What are the causes of precipitation?

Precipitation occurs when water droplets or crystals condense out of air saturated with water vapor and fall from the sky to the ground. It may occur when evaporation causes the amount of water vapor in the air to increase or when air cools and its capacity to hold water decreases. Precipitation comes from clouds.

How does flat topography affect climate?

Topography Affects Rain and Snowfall

As air rises, it also cools. Cooler air is capable of holding less water vapor than warmer air. ... This creates an effect known as a rainshadow on their leeward (protected) sides, where the air contains very little moisture.

How is climate affected by topography?

The topography of an area can influence the weather and climate. ... Mountainous areas tend to have more extreme weather because it acts as a barrier to air movements and moisture. One side of mountain can be dry while the other side is full of vegetation. Mountains can cause a physical barrier to rain clouds.

How latitude affects the climate?

Latitude or distance from the equator – Temperatures drop the further an area is from the equator due to the curvature of the earth. ... As a result, more energy is lost and temperatures are cooler.

Where does more precipitation occur?

The global distribution of precipitation is influenced by the general circulation of the atmosphere, proximity to large bodies of water, and topography. Precipitation is most abundant where air rises, and least abundant where it sinks. It also tends to be greater near oceans and lakes, and in higher elevations.

What are the factors affecting weather and climate?

The five factors that determine the weather of any land area are: the amount of solar energy received because of latitude; the area's elevation or proximity to mountains; nearness to large bodies of water and relative temperatures of land and water; the number of such storm systems as cyclones, hurricanes, and ...

What are the 5 major factors that affect climate?

• Latitude. It depends on how close or how far it is to the equator. ...
• Ocean currents. Certain ocean currents have different temperatures. ...
• Wind and air masses. Heated ground causes air to rise which results in lower air pressure. ...
• Elevation. The higher up you are, the colder and drier it will be. ...
• Relief.

What are the examples of precipitation?

Some examples of precipitation are rain, hail, sleet, and snow. Condensation is when cool air turns water vapor back into liquid and makes clouds.

When precipitation comes down to the earth in the liquid form it is called?

Water vapor condenses into tens of millions of tiny droplets that form clouds. Clouds lose their water as rain or snow, that is known as precipitation. While precipitation comes down to the earth inside the liquid shape, it's miles called rain.

What is precipitation in geography class 7?

Complete answer: Precipitation is the process in which water from the atmosphere falls back on earth in liquid or frozen form. Precipitation can occur in the form of rain, sleet and snow. -Water in the oceans, seas, rivers and other water bodies evaporate due to heat of the sun.

Does precipitation mean Chance of rain?

The official definition of the probability of precipitation by the National Weather Service is the chance of precipitation (rain, snow, etc.) occurring at any one spot in the area covered by the forecast. ... For example, if we're 100% confident that 30% of the Valley will get rainfall, then there's a 30% chance for rain.
