Typical cervical vertebrae have several features distinct from those typical of thoracic or lumbar vertebrae. The most notable distinction is the presence of one foramen, in each transverse process.

What foramen is present in cervical vertebrae?

The transverse foramen, through which the vertebral artery passes, is characteristic of the cervical vertebrae, except for the last, in which it is usually absent.

Do cervical vertebrae have vertebral foramen?

The vertebral foramen begins at cervical vertebra #1 (C1 or atlas) and continues inferior to lumbar vertebra #5 (L5). The vertebral foramen houses the spinal cord and its meninges.

How many vertebrae have vertebral foramen?

The intervertebral foramen (also called neural foramen, and often abbreviated as IV foramen or IVF), is a foramen between two spinal vertebrae. Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae all have intervertebral foramina.

How many vertebral foramen are there?

There are two neural foramina between each pair of vertebrae—one on each side.

How many cervical discs are there?

There are 6 intervertebral discs in the highly-mobile cervical spine. These cervical discs tend to be thinner than the lumbar discs in the lower back but thicker than the thoracic discs in the less-mobile upper back.

How many vertebrae are in the neck?

The spine has three normal curves: cervical, thoracic and lumbar. There are seven cervical vertebrae in the neck, 12 thoracic vertebrae in the torso and five lumbar vertebrae in the lower back.

How many cervical vertebrae have transverse foramen?

The transverse processes are short and house the foramen transversarium, which, in the upper six vertebrae, gives passage to the vertebral artery and vein, as well as a plexus of sympathetic nerves. Each process consists of an anterior and a posterior part.

Which vertebrae has transverse foramina?

Cervical vertebrae possess transverse foramina to allow for the vertebral arteries to pass through on their way to the foramen magnum to end in the circle of Willis. These are the smallest, lightest vertebrae and the vertebral foramina are triangular in shape.

Can you have 8 cervical vertebrae?

There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves (8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal). Because there are only seven cervical vertebrae, the first seven cervical nerves exit above the same numbered cervical vertebrae.

How many vertebrae make up the cervical region of the vertebral column?

Regions of the Vertebral Column

In the neck, there are seven cervical vertebrae, each designated with the letter “C” followed by its number. Superiorly, the C1 vertebra articulates (forms a joint) with the occipital condyles of the skull. Inferiorly, C1 articulates with the C2 vertebra, and so on.

What is the location of the cervical vertebrae?

Anatomical terms of bone

In tetrapods, cervical vertebrae (singular: vertebra) are the vertebrae of the neck, immediately below the skull.

Where is the cervical vertebrae?

The neck is part of a long flexible column, known as the spinal column or backbone, which extends through most of the body. The cervical spine (neck region) consists of seven bones (C1-C7 vertebrae), which are separated from one another by intervertebral discs.

What are the 26 vertebrae?

The spine, also known as the vertebral column or spinal column, is a column of 26 bones in an adult body — 24 separate vertebrae interspaced with cartilage, and then additionally the sacrum and coccyx.

What are the disc numbers of the spine?

There are 23 discs in the human spine: 6 in the cervical region (neck), 12 in the thoracic region (middle back), and 5 in the lumbar region (lower back). IVDs allow the spine to be flexible without sacrificing a great deal of strength.

How many vertebrae are in the thoracic spine?

Twelve vertebrae, numbered T1 through T12 from top to bottom, make up the thoracic spine. When viewed from the side, a normal forward curvature called kyphosis (or kyphotic curve) is seen. Its attachment to the rib cage affords the thoracic region of the spinal column greater stability and strength.

How many discs are in the thoracic spine?

There are 24 intervertebral discs in the spine. Of those, 12 are located in the thoracic spine. Each thoracic disc sits between two vertebrae to provide cushioning and shock absorption while preventing the vertebrae from grinding against each other.

Where is C6 7 located?

The C6-C7 disc is 6th cervical disc near the lower part of the neck, near the top of the shoulders. The nerve root that would be affected by the C6-C7 disc herniation controls the arms, the shoulders, the heart, the lungs, and more.

Where is C5 6 and C6 7 located?

The C5-C6 spinal motion segment (located in the lower cervical spine just above the C7 vertebra) provides flexibility and support to much of the neck and the head above.

What are the 8 pairs of cervical nerves?

Each pair of spinal nerves roughly correspond to a segment of the vertebral column: 8 cervical spinal nerve pairs (C1–C8), 12 thoracic pairs (T1–T12), 5 lumbar pairs (L1–L5), 5 sacral pairs (S1–S5), and 1 coccygeal pair.

Where is C3 4 located?

The C3, C4, and C5 vertebrae form the midsection of the cervical spine, near the base of the neck. A cervical vertebrae injury is the most severe of all spinal cord injuries because the higher up in the spine an injury occurs, the more damage that is caused to the central nervous system.

What is C4 5 in the spine?

The C4 and C5 vertebrae are the primary members of the mid-cervical spine. These two members are the most mobile in the mid-neck, and they support most of the forward and backward movements of this section of the neck. Therefore, they are prone to motion-related injury and disorders like disc herniation.

How many vertebrae are in each section?

Each section is made up of individual bones, called vertebrae. There are 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, and 5 lumbar vertebrae.

What passes through the transverse foramina of the cervical vertebrae?

The vertebral artery and venous system pass through the transverse foramen, which is located medial to the tubercles of the transverse process and lateral to the vertebral body.

What are the 5 regions of the vertebral column how many bones are in each region?

Answer: The adult vertebral column consists of 24 vertebrae, plus the sacrum and coccyx. The vertebrae are subdivided into cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions. There are seven cervical vertebrae (C1–C7), 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1–T12), and five lumbar vertebrae (L1–L5).
