Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) involves inserting a catheter into a blood vessel in your upper leg or chest and passing it towards your aortic valve. The catheter is then used to guide and fix a replacement valve over the top of the old one.

How long does the TAVI procedure take?

The procedure usually takes one to two hours. Your heart team will close the puncture site with a device that seals the blood vessel. Will I feel any pain? You may feel uncomfortable at the procedure site after the TAVI procedure, but this will wear off in a few days.

How painful is TAVR?

It is common to have pain at the catheter insertion site (often in the leg) for several days following a TAVR. Pain tends to gradually resolve as you recover and heal. Controlling pain is important because it helps you complete rehabilitation and increase your activities.

What is the difference between TAVR and TAVI?

TAVI stands for transcatheter aortic valve implantation. The procedure and its approaches are the same as TAVR. Your doctor may use the terms interchangeably when discussing your treatment options.

Is TAVR considered major surgery?

However, TAVR is still a major procedure that has risks. Most TAVR procedures are performed with sedation without the need for general anesthesia. The most common risks associated with TAVR include: Damage to your blood vessels.

Is TAVI better than open heart surgery?

Nonetheless, reintervention with TAVR was associated with lower mortality than surgery. Patients who had TAVR performed using a transfemoral approach (from the groin to the heart) and open-heart surgery patients both had better outcomes than patients who underwent TAVR performed through an incision in the chest area.

What is life expectancy after aortic valve replacement?

This data suggests that a 42-year-old patient undergoing aortic valve replacement (AVR) with a tissue valve is expected to live to 58 years of age. In contrast, a 42-year-old in the general population is expected to live to 78 years of age.

How long are you in the hospital after TAVI?

It's likely that you'll have to remain in hospital for up to five days following a TAVI procedure. Initially, you'll be under close observation and then, once the medical team are happy you're well enough, you'll be transferred to the ward.

Who is not a candidate for TAVR?

You have aortic stenosis that is severe in nature and is causing symptoms. You are not a candidate for surgical aortic valve replacement or you're at high risk for surgery and likely would benefit from TAVR therapy. Your aortic valve and blood vessels are of appropriate size for the TAVR procedure.

Do you feel better after heart valve replacement?

You'll likely begin to feel better almost right away. Your condition will improve gradually, and you'll notice that each day you'll feel a little bit better. However, you'll have to make some lifestyle adjustments to get the most out of your new or repaired heart valve.

Do you have to take blood thinners after TAVR?

TAVR patients should stay on blood-thinning medication for 6 months after the procedure and aspirin for the rest of their lives, or as their doctor recommends. Patients who do not take blood-thinning medication may be at increased risk of developing a dangerous blood clot. This may result in a stroke.

Why does the patient need the head of the bed elevated immediately after TAVR?

FDA-approved valves for TAVR

If the femoral artery was accessed during the procedure, keep the head of the bed elevated 30 degrees or less to minimize bending at the groin and avoid disrupting the closure device at the puncture site.

How soon can you drive after TAVR?

Driving: You must not drive for 4 weeks after the date of your procedure. If your family doctor or your heart doctor has told you in the past that you could not drive, you must check with him/her before you drive again. The first time you drive, you must have someone with you.

How will I feel after a TAVI?

You may feel uncomfortable at the procedure site after the TAVI procedure, but this will wear off in a few days and you will be given painkillers as necessary by the nurses looking after you. You may be given paracetamol when you leave hospital. If you require additional pain medications, you should see your GP.

What are the risks of having a TAVI?

Although TAVI has a high success rate with few surgical complications, it still carries risks. Common procedure complications include vascular injuries, bleeding, stroke, atrioventricular conduction system injuries, AKI, and aortic regurgitation.

Is TAVI done under general anesthesia?

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI) has become the standard of care for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. Since its introduction, the majority of TAVI procedures have been performed under general anesthesia.

How long do TAVR valves last?

And because TAVR candidates have traditionally been a sicker cohort, we do not have substantial data on the effectiveness of TAVR beyond five years or so after placement. Medical literature suggests the lifespan of the tissue valves used in surgical aortic valve replacement is typically about 10 to 20 years.

What is the average age of TAVR patients?

A majority of patients, 4,101, received TAVR. The most common reason for selecting TAVR was age -- the average age for TAVR patients was 82 versus 76 in the SAVR group -- followed by frailty, Werner said. TAVR patients were also more likely to be female. Roughly 75% of the TAVR procedures were transfemoral.

What is the mortality rate for TAVR?

Overall, the all-cause mortality rate for TAVR patients was 2.2%, and 29% of those patients died out of the hospital. Out-of-hospital 30-day mortality was more likely among older patients, patients with a longer length of stay and patients with more medical comorbidities.

What is the success rate of TAVI procedure?

The observed survival rate for the TAVI cohort at 30 days, 1-year and 5-years is 95.7%, 86.9% and 46.2%, respectively (supplement Table 5). The survival rate for TAVI patients is lower than that of the general.

Can you have an MRI with a TAVI?

We would advise that no MRI scan is carried out for the first six weeks after the procedure unless recommended by your cardiologist.

Who is suitable for a TAVI?

This puts less strain on the body and may mean TAVI is more suitable for people who are too frail to have a conventional valve replacement. Research suggests the procedure may be as effective as surgery for people in whom surgery would be difficult or risky, and it may result in a faster recovery.

Does aortic valve replacement shorten your life?

Patients who have undergone surgical replacement of the heart's aortic valve have a shorter life expectancy than the normal population, the loss in life expectancy being particularly marked in the young.

Can I take Viagra after aortic valve replacement?

Using Viagra after open heart surgery

According to the American College of Cardiology, a person should be able to use Viagra or other PDE5 inhibitors when they have recovered from either a coronary artery bypass or angioplasty.

What should you avoid with a bicuspid aortic valve?

Most people with BAV can safely exercise without significant restrictions. Strenuous isometric exercise (e.g., weight-lifting, climbing steep inclines, chin-ups), should be avoided if there is severe valve disease, or moderate to severe aortic ectasia.
