How does lichtenberg burning work?
Robert Young Lichtenberg burning works by passing electricity at very high voltage between two electrodes while they are in contact with a piece of wood. ... The electricity seeks the path of least resistance while generating heat along the wood surface and between the electrodes, burning the wood as it goes.
How is fractal burning done?
Fractal burning is a relatively new technique which creates patterns in wood that resemble branching or fractal patterns by applying electrical current from a high-voltage source across wood items that may have been soaked with a chemical solution.
What is needed for fractal burning?
The fractal burning process typically uses a high-voltage transformer, often repurposed from a microwave oven, to flow current across wood items that have been soaked with a chemical solution.
How many volts does it take to burn wood?
To burn the wood, you will need to generate at least 2000 volts, and a battery charger can only deliver up to 12 volts. This is why a transformer is needed, and this also makes it very dangerous since that amount of voltage can deliver enough amount of electric current to kill a person.
How long do Lichtenbergs last?
Lichtenberg figures appear approximately 1 hour after exposure to lightning and decreases over time, tending to disappear within 24–48 hours.
Lichtenberg Fractal Wood Burning Tests
24 related questions foundWhat wood works best for fractal burning?
Almost any wood can be used, though lighter woods will show off the Lichtenberg patterns more clearly than darker woods. After testing many types, I found two that performed the best: fine grain fiber board and plywood with a very thin facing veneer. Fiber board on the bottom, plywood above.
What is a Lichtenberg device?
Lichtenberg figures are branching tree-like patterns that are created by the passage of high voltage discharge along the surface, or through, electrically insulating materials (dielectrics). ... A fractal pattern is a mathematical construction so designed that it looks the same at any scale.
What is a microwave transformer?
The microwave oven transformer has three windings, one of which is a primary winding, and AC 220V mains voltage is applied to this winding; a plurality of silicon steel sheets of a certain thickness are inserted between the primary and secondary windings, so that a high magnetic resistance is formed in the transformer.
What is a Lichtenberg generator?
ESA Warns of Unsafe Use of Electrical Equipment to Assemble Lichtenberg Generators. ... These generators are used to create art and abstract objects by burning fractal patterns into various materials such as wood and acrylic.

How do you make a fractal pattern?
The steps to making your own fractal are as follows:- Draw a large version of a shape.
- Choose a rule that you'll repeat over and over.
- Apply this rule to your image or shape over and over.
- Keep going until you can't draw the details.
Can you burn wood with a heat gun?
Heat up your gun for a minute or two and then start with your edges and go over entire surface using your heat gun. I focused a lot on the edge of he wood as this would be a natural place for weathering. You will begin to see dark burned marks on your surface. Depending on the wood it may show up differently.
How many people have died from Fractal wood burning?
In evaluating online news reports, we found 25 unique individuals with death or injury attributed to fractal wood burning from July 2016 to January 2020. Five sustained substantial injuries, while 20 reportedly died. Ages ranged from 17 years old to the 60s.
Can Lichtenberg figures be permanent?
The fern-like patterns, known as Lichtenberg figures, occur when an electricity surge causes blood vessels to burst. In most cases, the marks are not permanent and can even disappear in just a couple of days.
Can you survive being struck by lightning?
Of every 10 people struck, nine will survive. But they could suffer a variety of short- and long-term effects: cardiac arrest, confusion, seizures, dizziness, muscle aches, deafness, headaches, memory deficits, distractibility, personality changes and chronic pain, among others.
What can I use to make a Lichtenberg machine?
Lichtenberg figures are formed when high voltage electricity passes along the surface of an insulated material. You can use a microwave transformer to build a machine that will produce Lichtenberg figures.
How many volts are in a car battery?
Measure and Analyze
When the probes touch the terminals while the car is off and the battery is resting, the multimeter display should show a reading of 12.2 to 12.6 volts (full charge). This voltage range means the battery is in good condition for starting the vehicle.
