An aquifer is a body of porous rock or sediment saturated with groundwater. Groundwater enters an aquifer as precipitation seeps through the soil. It can move through the aquifer and resurface through springs and wells.

What causes aquifers to form?

Similar to a below-ground sponge, aquifers are the natural accumulation of runoff and precipitation. Below the surface, this runoff then percolates into crevices between rocks, silt and other material.

Where do aquifers usually form?

Groundwater can be found in a range of different types of rock, but the most productive aquifers are found in porous, permeable rock such as sandstone, or the open cavities and caves of limestone aquifers.

How is groundwater and aquifer formed naturally?

Groundwater is naturally replenished by surface water from precipitation, streams, and rivers when this recharge reaches the water table.

What is an aquifer layer made of?

An aquifer is an underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures or unconsolidated materials (gravel, sand, or silt). Groundwater from aquifers can be extracted using a water well.

How Do Aquifers Work?

Are aquifers formed quickly?

Aquifers are filled slowly. For this reason, aquifers can dry up when people drain them faster than they can be refilled—a process called aquifer depletion.

What is aquifer and types?

An aquifer is a body of rock and/or sediment that holds groundwater. ... There are two general types of aquifers: confined and unconfined. Confined aquifers have a layer of impenetrable rock or clay above them, while unconfined aquifers lie below a permeable layer of soil.

Can you build on top of an aquifer?

Basal uplift can occur once the weight of all of the water and soil has been excavated from on top of an aquifer. ... But, overcoming the challenges of building over the Hatfield Valley Aquifer actually took a decade.

What is a water table aquifer?

A water table describes the boundary between water-saturated ground and unsaturated ground. Below the water table, rocks and soil are full of water. Pockets of water existing below the water table are called aquifers. An area's water table can fluctuate as water seeps downward from the surface.

How are aquifers replenished?

Most aquifers are naturally recharged by rainfall or other surface water that infiltrates into the ground. ... The stored water is available for use in dry years when surface water supplies may be low.

What is an example of aquifer?

A good example is the water of the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, which extends through several countries in an area that is now the Sahara. The water is being used extensively for water supply and irrigation purposes. Radioisotope dating techniques have shown that this water is many thousands of years old.

What is an aquifer and why is it important?

Aquifers are bodies of saturated rock and sediment through which water can move, and they provide 99% of our groundwater. Humans rely on aquifers for most of our drinking water.

Are there fish in the aquifer?

Among vertebrates, only fish and salamanders have successfully colonized subterranean aquatic habitats; they are found typically in highly porous and permeable karstic aquifers (those formed from the dissolution of carbonate rocks such as limestone).

Can aquifers be formed in consolidated rock?

Aquifers can be either consolidated rock (such as sandstone) or unconsolidated (such as the sands and gravels that make up the High Plains aquifer.

How long does it take an aquifer to refill?

Depending on its permeability, aquifers can gain water at a rate of 50 feet per year to 50 inches per century. They have both recharge and discharge zones. A recharge zone usually occurs at a high elevation where rain, snowmelt, lake or river water seeps into the ground to replenish the aquifer.

Is there always water underground?

Some water underlies the Earth's surface almost everywhere, beneath hills, mountains, plains, and deserts. It is not always accessible, or fresh enough for use without treatment, and it's sometimes difficult to locate or to measure and describe.

What is a consequence of too much water being removed from an aquifer?

Some consequences of aquifer depletion include: Lower lake levels or—in extreme cases—intermittent or totally dry perennial streams. These effects can harm aquatic and riparian plants and animals that depend on regular surface flows. Land subsidence and sinkhole formation in areas of heavy withdrawal.

What is the surface of the water called?

Surface water is any body of water above ground, including streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, reservoirs, and creeks. The ocean, despite being saltwater, is also considered surface water. ... Water that seeps deep into the ground is called groundwater.

What is aquifer answer?

An aquifer according to word web dictionary refers to any underground layer of water-bearing rock or geological formation that yields sufficiently groundwater for wells and springs.

How do aquifers form for kids?

Underground water fills small holes and cracks within the rocks, sand, and stones that make up the aquifer. These small openings provide spaces for the water to slowly move through, much like a sponge allows water to pass through it. ... For an aquifer to form, the rocks and materials in the ground must be permeable.

How Can groundwater be replenished again?

Groundwater replenishment happens through direct recharge and in-lieu recharge. Water used for direct recharge most often comes from flood flows, water conservation, recycled water, desalination and water transfers. ... Managed aquifer recharge occurs through injection wells or the use of ponds and infiltration basins.

How Can groundwater be replenished?

Groundwater supplies are replenished, or recharged, by rain and snow melt that seeps down into the cracks and crevices beneath the land's surface. ... Groundwater can also be extracted through a well drilled into the aquifer. A well is a pipe in the ground that fills with groundwater.

How long does well take to refill?

It depends on whether or not the well taps into a completely pumped out aquifer. If the well runs dry in the summer after the rains stop, it will take three months for it to get back to normal.
