Takeoff roll (ground roll) is the portion of the takeoff procedure during which the airplane is accelerated from a standstill to an airspeed that provides sufficient lift for it to become airborne. ... The initial climb begins when the airplane leaves the surface and a climb pitch attitude has been established.

What happens during takeoff?

Takeoff is the phase of flight in which an aerospace vehicle leaves the ground and becomes airborne. For aircraft traveling vertically, this is known as liftoff. For aircraft that take off horizontally, this usually involves starting with a transition from moving along the ground on a runway.

What do pilots say when taking off?

There is an announcement like: "Flight attendants, prepare for take-off please." "Cabin crew, please take your seats for take-off." Within a minute after take-off, an announcement might be made reminding passengers to keep their seat belts fastened.

What does a pilot do during takeoff?

He may be asked to 'line up and wait', which means he can taxi to the start of the runway, and position the aircraft ready to move down the runway, or commence the 'takeoff roll', as it is called. He must not actually commence the takeoff roll until ATC tells him 'cleared for takeoff'.

What is the process of takeoff?

Takeoff is the phase of flight in which an aircraft goes through a transition from moving along the ground (taxiing) to flying in the air, usually starting on a runway. For balloons, helicopters and some specialized fixed-wing aircraft (VTOL aircraft such as the Harrier), no runway is needed.

Airbus A330 turbine blade fails with explosive force during takeoff roll.

What is a standing takeoff?

A true static takeoff is when you hold the brakes, apply takeoff thrust (even if you stop at an intermediate position to verify things are working properly, you'll still hold the brakes until you get the thrust all the way up), then release the brakes (gently, to avoid being slammed back into your seat) and off you go.

Is it takeoff or take off?

Take off, sometimes spelled as "take-off" or "takeoff," is a part of cost estimating in the construction industry. Estimators use construction drawings and count or measure the quantities of materials, systems, parts, etc. to calculate the cost estimate.

Why do planes turn left after takeoff?

During takeoff, air accelerated behind the prop (known as the slipstream) follows a corkscrew pattern. As it wraps itself around the fuselage of your plane, it hits the left side of your aircraft's tail, creating a yawing motion, and making the aircraft yaw left.

What should flaps be at takeoff?

Aircraft use takeoff flap settings that are usually between 5-15 degrees (most jets use leading edge slats as well). That's quite a bit different than landing, when aircraft typically use 25-40 degrees of flaps.

How fast is a 737 going when it lands?

An empty Boeing 737 weighs 75,000 pounds, has a wingspan of 112 feet, typically lands at 178 miles per hour, and requires a minimum landing runway distance of 1,710 meters, about 19 football fields.

What do pilot say before landing?

To indicate the landing clearance or final approach, the Captain will either make the following announcement and/or blink the No Smoking sign. “Flight attendants, prepare for landing please.” “Cabin crew, please take your seats for landing.” It may be followed by an announcement by a flight attendant.

Do pilots Say Ready for takeoff?

12.2. 4.10 says that pilots only need to say "ready" to inform ATC that they're ready for departure: "Tower, N12345 is holding at 18, ready". It doesn't address uncontrolled fields, but the usual call I was taught was "N12345 is departing runway 18".

Why do pilots say tree instead of three?

Aviators often speak “pilot English” to avoid miscommunications over radio transmission. “Tree” for instance, means three, “fife” is the number five and “niner” means nine, says Tom Zecha, a manager at AOPA. The variations stemmed from a desire to avoid confusion between similar-sounding numbers, he says.

Why is takeoff so scary?

Answer: The sensation of slowing down is really one of slowing the rate of acceleration; this is due to reducing the thrust after takeoff to the climb setting. The sensation of “dropping” comes from the retraction of the flaps and slats. The rate of climb is reduced, causing it to feel like a descent.

What does takeoff on a plane feel like?

During takeoff you may hear a clunk when the plane's nose tilts up and you lift off. That's the landing gear shock absorber extending to its limit. ... Shortly after takeoff you may feel a sinking sensation, that happens when the flaps are retracted, allowing the plane to accelerate.

Can a plane takeoff without flaps?

Yes take-off without flaps is possible. The Airbus A300 and Boeing 767 are approved for such take-offs and it is being done regularly. It results in a better climb gradient, especially with one engine out.

Why pilots say rotate on take off?

Pilots say rotate to indicate that the airplane has reached its rotation speed, which is the speed at which the airplane can take off safely without stalling. ... Rotation before reaching Vr can result in a tailstrike, meaning that the tail of the airplane hits the ground and gets damaged.

Why do I get dizzy when plane takes off?

Motion sickness in flight - otherwise known as airsickness - is a real problem for many people. The most common symptoms of this condition are nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and dizziness. This condition is caused by the movements and oscillations of the plane whilst it is in flight.

Why can't you feel how fast a plane is going?

Short answer: Because we're moving at the same velocity as the Earth, in the same way that passengers inside an airplane don't feel movement because they're moving with the same velocity as the plane. People on a smooth flight don't feel the plane's movement.

What is takeoff?

1a : to start off or away often suddenly : set out, depart took off for her trip. b : to leave the surface : begin flight.

What is takeoff in construction?

In construction, a “takeoff” is the process of determining how much of each material is needed to complete a job. It is also sometimes called a quantity takeoff or material takeoff and sometimes you'll see it hyphenated as “take-off”.

What is takeoff in business?

Takeoff is the point in the development of something, such as an economy or a business, when it begins to be successful.

What is rolling takeoff?

Takeoff roll (ground roll) is the portion of the takeoff procedure during which the airplane is accelerated from a standstill to an airspeed that provides sufficient lift for it to become airborne.
