Hydrogen ions, or protons, will diffuse from an area of high proton concentration to an area of lower proton concentration, and an electrochemical concentration gradient of protons across a membrane can be harnessed to make ATP. ... ATP synthase is the enzyme that makes ATP by chemiosmosis.

Where do protons diffuse in chemiosmosis?

Chemiosmosis involves the pumping of protons through special channels in the membranes of mitochondria from the inner to the outer compartment. The pumping establishes a proton (H⁺) gradient. After the gradient is established, protons diffuse down the gradient through a transport protein called ATP synthase.

What happens during chemiosmosis?

During chemiosmosis, the free energy from the series of reactions that make up the electron transport chain is used to pump hydrogen ions across the membrane, establishing an electrochemical gradient. ... The production of ATP using the process of chemiosmosis in mitochondria is called oxidative phosphorylation.

Does chemiosmosis diffuse?

Chemiosmosis is the process of diffusion of ions (usually H⁺ ions, also known as protons) across a selectively permeable membrane. As in osmosis, chemiosmosis leads to a concentration gradient of the diffusing ion across the membrane.

How do protons move in chemiosmosis?

Chemiosmosis in prokaryotic cells

The hydrogen ions (protons) move across the biological membrane via the ATP synthase (a transport protein) when a proton gradient forms on the other side of the membrane. ... As they flow through, energy is released and used to convert ADP to ATP through phosphorylation.

Gradients (ATP Synthases)

Where do protons build up during photosynthesis chemiosmosis?

During photosynthetic electron transport, protons accumulate at high concentration inside the thylakoid space. The concentration gradient between the inside and outside of the thylakoids is the energy source used by the ATP synthase.

What is the relationship between chemiosmosis and the proton-motive force?

The exergonic movement of protons (called a proton-motive force) across the membrane during chemiosmosis provides the direct energy needed for the endergonic process of ATP synthesis.

Does Chemiosmosis occur in anaerobic respiration?

Chemiosmosis occurs in mitochondria during cellular respiration and in chloroplasts during photosynthesis. Both of these processes generate ATP.

What is the difference between Chemiosmosis and oxidative phosphorylation?

oxidative phosphorylation: A metabolic pathway that uses energy released by the oxidation of nutrients to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). chemiosmosis: The movement of ions across a selectively permeable membrane, down their electrochemical gradient.

What is the connection of ETC to Chemiosmosis?

The electron transport chain forms a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane, which drives the synthesis of ATP via chemiosmosis.

What does chemiosmosis involve quizlet?

Chemiosmosis involves the pumping of protons through special channels in the membranes of mitochondria from the inner to the outer compartment. The pumping establishes a proton gradient. After the gradient is established, protons diffuse down the gradient through a transport protein called ATP synthase.

How does chemiosmosis function in bioenergetics?

How does chemiosmosis function in bioenergetics? Chemiosmosis is the movement of hydrogen ions across a selectively permiable membrane. this generates ATP when ithe ions are moved during cellular respiration or photosynthesis. Chemiosmosis is essential in ATP production in eukariotic and some prokaryotic cells.

What does chemiosmosis in photosynthesis involve?

A photon strikes photosystem II to initiate photosynthesis. ... The ions flow through ATP synthase from the thylakoid space into the stroma in a process called chemiosmosis to form molecules of ATP, which are used for the formation of sugar molecules in the second stage of photosynthesis.

Where does oxidative phosphorylation occur?

Oxidative phosphorylation takes place in the inner mitochondrial membrane, in contrast with most of the reactions of the citric acid cycle and fatty acid oxidation, which take place in the matrix.

What is oxidative phosphorylation also known as?

Oxidative phosphorylation is also known as the electron transport chain. It includes the reactions that result in the synthesis of ATP from ADP + Pi. Heat can also be generated when ATP production is uncoupled from the respiratory chain.

What is oxidative phosphorylation Class 11?

Complete answer: Metabolic pathway in which cells use enzymes to oxidize nutrients, thereby releasing the chemical energy stored within in order to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is called oxidative phosphorylation. This process takes place inside the mitochondria of the cell.

What occurs during oxidative phosphorylation?

Oxidative phosphorylation is the process in which ATP is formed as a result of the transfer of electrons from NADH or FADH ₂ to O ₂ by a series of electron carriers. This process, which takes place in mitochondria, is the major source of ATP in aerobic organisms (Figure 18.1).

What is the final electron acceptor in chemiosmosis?

At the end of the electron transport system, two protons, two electrons, and half of an oxygen molecule combine to form water. Since oxygen is the final electron acceptor, the process is called aerobic respiration.

What conditions are necessary for the process of chemiosmosis in the electron transport chain?

The 4 basic postulates of chemiosmosis are (1) that the membrane-located ATPase reversibly couples the translocation of protons across the membrane to the flow of anhydro-bond equivalents between water and the couple ATP/(ADP + Pi); (2) that the membrane-located respiratory chain catalyzes the flow of reducing ...

Which of the following is associated with chemiosmosis?

This process is related to osmosis, the diffusion of water across a membrane, which is why it is called "chemiosmosis". ATP synthase is the enzyme that makes ATP by chemiosmosis. It allows protons to pass through the membrane and uses the free energy difference to phosphorylate adenosine diphosphate (ADP), making ATP.

Does chemiosmosis occur in photosynthesis or cellular respiration?

Yes, chemiosmosis occurs in photosynthesis and respiration. During photosynthesis, chemiosmosis occurs in the chloroplasts, whereas during respiration, chemiosmosis occurs in the mitochondria.

Which of the following is true regarding chemiosmosis?

Which of the following is true regarding chemiosmosis? The energy from a proton gradient is used to make ATP. Chemiosmosis regenerates electron carriers like NADH and FAHD2. ... As H+ ions flow down their gradient, they pass through an enzyme called ATP synthase, which uses the flow of protons to make ATP.

What does the proton motive force power?

The proton motive force occurs when the cell membrane becomes energized due to electron transport reactions by the electron carriers embedded in it. Basically, this causes the cell to act like a tiny battery. Its energy can either be used right away to do work, like power flagella, or be stored for later in ATP.

What is the proton motive force?

Proton motive force refers to the proton gradient that is established across the inner mitochondrial membrane during electron transfer through Complexes I, II, and IV.

What is the proton motive force quizlet?

Proton-motive force. The energy-rich, unequal distribution of protons established across the membrane.
