Prophage induction In the lytic cycle, the virus commandeers the cell's reproductive machinery. The cell may fill with new viruses until it lyses or bursts, or it may release the new viruses one at a time in an exocytotic process.

Is prophage in the lytic cycle?

Under certain conditions, including various stresses causing DNA damages, the prophage is excised and initiates a lytic cycle. Some phages also adopt a pseudotemperate lifestyle, i.e., they generally do not integrate the chromosome of their host and replicate as linear or circular plasmids within the cytoplasm.

Is prophage lytic or lysogenic?

The lysogenic cycle: The phage infects a bacterium and inserts its DNA into the bacterial chromosome, allowing the phage DNA (now called a prophage) to be copied and passed on along with the cell's own DNA.

What does the lytic cycle include?

The lytic cycle involves the reproduction of viruses using a host cell to manufacture more viruses; the viruses then burst out of the cell. The lysogenic cycle involves the incorporation of the viral genome into the host cell genome, infecting it from within.

What is a lytic phage?

Phage lytic enzymes are enzymes produced by bacterial viruses, either as part of their virion to facilitate bacterial infection through local peptidoglycan degradation, or as soluble proteins to induce massive cell lysis at the end of the lytic replication cycle.

Lytic v. Lysogenic Cycles of Bacteriophages

What is the function of the capsid?

A primary function of the capsid is to protect the viral genome from environmental conditions and ultimately to deliver the genome to the interior of a homologous host cell.

How is the lytic cycle different from the lysogenic cycle?

The difference between lysogenic and lytic cycles is that, in lysogenic cycles, the spread of the viral DNA occurs through the usual prokaryotic reproduction, whereas a lytic cycle is more immediate in that it results in many copies of the virus being created very quickly and the cell is destroyed.

What factor may induce a prophage to enter the lytic cycle?

What factor may induce a prophage to enter the lytic cycle? Ultraviolet radiation is known to cause the induction of prophage into the lytic cycle. During the lysogenic cycle, it is possible for integrated phage genes to change the characteristics of the host cell.

What is the fate of the prophage during the lysogenic stage?

What is the fate of the prophage during the lysogenic stage? It is released from the cell by lysing the cell. It is copied every time the host DNA replicates. It is packaged into viral proteins and maintained until the host is exposed to an environmental stress.

Which of the following is characteristic of lytic cycle?

The lytic cycle results in the destruction of the infected cell and its membrane. ... In the lytic cycle, the viral DNA exists as a separate free floating molecule within the bacterial cell, and replicates separately from the host bacterial DNA, whereas in the lysogenic cycle, the viral DNA is located within the host DNA.

During which virus cycle are prophage genes regulated by a repressor coded for by the prophage?

During the lysogenic cycle, prophage genes are regulated by a repressor coded for by the prophage. The prophage is replicated each time the cell divides. 11.

Are lytic and lysogenic cycles only for bacteriophages?

Bacteriophages have a lytic or lysogenic cycle. The lytic cycle leads to the death of the host, whereas the lysogenic cycle leads to integration of phage into the host genome. Bacteriophages inject DNA into the host cell, whereas animal viruses enter by endocytosis or membrane fusion.

What is prophage Class 11?

Complete answer: A prophage could be a bacteriophage genome which is embedded and integrated into the circular bacterial DNA chromosome. This is often an inactive frame of a phage in which the viral qualities are displayed within the bacterium without causing disruption of the bacterial cell.

Where would you look to find a prophage?

A prophage is a phage genome inserted into a specific site on a bacterial chromosome. A provirus is a viral genome permanently inserted into a host genome. Animal cells would most likely carry a provirus.

What is prophage in botany class 11?

A prophage is a bacteriophage genome which is inserted and integrated into the circular bacterial DNA chromosome. This is a latent form of a phage in which the viral genes are present in the bacterium without causing disruption of the bacterial cell.

How is the lytic cycle different from the lysogenic state with respect to the infected host cell?

How is the lytic cycle different from the lysogenic cycle with respect to the infected host cell? ... The host cell dies during the lytic stage. What is the fate of the prophage during the lysogenic stage? It is copied every time the host DNA replicates.

What determines whether or not the lytic cycle or lysogenic cycle is entered?

What determines whether or not the lytic cycle or lysogenic cycle is entered? If the host cell bursts, it is the lytic cycle. If the virus inter grates a becomes a chromosome, it can duplicate and be released into the daughter cells, this is the lysogenic cycle.

Is another name for lysogenic phages that have a lysogenic replication cycle?

Temperate phages is another name for lysogenic phages that have a lysogenic replication cycle. 4.

Which of the following describes a viral capsid?

The capsid is a proteinaceous shell, that forms the covering around the genetic material that is, DNA or RNA of the virus, and thus protects the nucleoid of the virus from chemical and biological agents and also helps the genome to enter into the host cell. A capsid is composed of many subunits called the capsomeres.

What are the stages of lytic cycle?

The stages of the lytic cycle are as follows: Attachment – the virus attaches itself to the host cell. Injection – the virus inserts its genetic material into the host cell. Integration – the genetic material tells the cell what to do.

What is a capsid in science?

: the protein shell of a virus particle surrounding its nucleic acid.

What is the difference between the lytic cycle and the lysogenic cycle quizlet?

What is the main difference between a lytic and lysogenic cycle? In the lytic cycle, the viral genome does not incorporate into the host genome. In the lysogenic cycle, the viral genome incorporates into the host genome and stays there throughout replication until the lytic cycle is triggered.

What is the biggest difference between the lytic and lysogenic cycle?

The main difference between lytic cycle and lysogenic cycle is that lytic cycle destroys the host cell whereas lysogenic cycle does not destroy the host cell. Viral DNA destroys the host cell DNA and arrests the cell functions in the lytic cycle.

Which of the following is a major difference between a Lysogenic and a lytic cycle in bacteriophages?

Which of the following is a major difference between a lysogenic and a lytic cycle in bacteriophages? Viral DNA becomes a physical part of the bacterial chromosome only in a lysogenic cycle. The bacteriophage attaches to bacterial surface receptor proteins only in a lysogenic cycle.
