Up to 25% of the energy of silage is found in the fermentation acids. ... Increasing energy intake of high capacity cows, from 134 to 174 MJ per cow per day by feeding more concentrate, increases milk production from 32.2 to 34.8 when organic matter digestibility of silage is 75.

Does silage affect milk quality?

Corn silage enhances quality milk production due to high digestibility, ease of handling, and palatability. However, Jordan (2015) found no significant difference in dry matter intake, milk yield or milk composition of corn silage and sorghum silage fed to 48 mid-lactation cows.

Does corn silage increase milk production?

Corn silage had no effect on milk production or milk composition. Cows fed corn silage did not have improved BW gain or body condition score. Each unit of corn silage consumed replaced 1.2 units of pasture, but total DMI was not different because of supplementation with corn silage.

What increases milk production in cows?

Consider milking recently fresh cows four or more times per day. Research has shown substantial increases in milk production when cows under 30 days in milk were milked 4 to 6 times per day. Cows gave more milk during the period of frequent milking and these increases persisted after milking frequency was decreased.

• Wastage my be more, if silage is not properly made.
• Poorly prepared silages are not accepted by animals.

What happens if silage is watery?

Moisture is critical when harvesting silage. Remember that if the silage is too wet there is a risk of butyric acid forming and nutrients being lost due to seepage. Silage that is over 70% moisture should not be harvested and should stand in the field for a few more days.

Why is silage not fed before milking?

Under competitive feeding situations, excessively coarse or lower fiber digestibility silages may limit DMI of lactating dairy cows due to eating time requirements that exceed available time at the feed bunk.

As a grain hybrid reaches silage maturity, its kernels dry rapidly and get very hard. ... While the kernels may have a high starch test weight, they remain whole or fracture into large pieces during silage harvest and cow chewing.
