Before we talk about welding through it, it's important to know exactly what mill scale is. The term hot-rolled steel comes from the manufacturing process. ... As the hot material encounters oxygen, an oxide layer—mill scale—forms on the surface.

Does hot rolled steel have scale?

Hot rolled steel means that the steel has been roll pressed at temperatures over 1,700F. When the metal is so hot, it's easier to work with because it's more malleable. ... Hot rolled steel has something called a “scale”.

What is mill scale on hot rolled steel?

Mill scale (often known simply as 'scale') refers to the thin, flaky texture that forms on the outer surface of hot-rolled iron oxides and metals. It is a by-product of manufacturing hot-rolled metal plates and sheets, occurring as the surface oxidizes during the heating, conditioning and hot rolling processes.

What kind of steel has mill scale?

Mill scale is found on all hot-rolled steel products unless processed in a protective atmosphere or descaled (e.g., for galvanizing). At hot rolling temperatures, an inner layer of wüstite, FeO, exists between the steel and magnetite.

Should I remove mill scale before welding?

Also with this process you have more arc spread (read: a higher arc tension) which makes the weld flow slightly better. Again, the weld remains too convex and there are many silicates on the weld. In all cases it remains necessary to remove the mill scale before welding.

Removing mill scale from hot rolled steel the easy way

Is it OK to paint over mill scale?

Removal of mill scale is virtually impossible by hand, and extremely tedious and time-consuming using power tool cleaning methods. ... Painting over mill scale, however tempting, is a futile exercise, as the presence of mill scale on the steel surface accelerates the corrosion of the underlying steel.

What is difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel?

It's important to note that the main difference between hot rolled and cold rolled steel is one of process. “Hot rolling” refers to processing done with heat. “Cold rolling” refers to processes done at or near room temperature. ... It may seem obvious, but some types of steel are better suited for certain applications.

What does mill scale look like?

Mill scale is bluish-black in color. It is usually less than 0.1 mm (0.0039 in) thick, and initially adheres to the steel surface and protects it from atmospheric corrosion provided no break occurs in this coating. ... Mill scale generated in rolling mills will be collected and sent to a sinter plant for recycling.

How long will hot rolled steel last outside?

Galvanized steel intended for prolonged outdoor use should be hot-dipped galvanized steel; which commonly lasts for about 70 years in many different environments.

Can you mig weld over mill scale?

You can usually get away with MIG welding through mill scale if your voltage and wire speed are set high enough. However, light duty hardwire MIG tends to be a more brittle weld; and doesn't penetrate mill scale very well.

Will sandblasting remove mill scale?

Sandblasting is the most widely used surface preparation for steel surfaces. Sandblasting removes rust, existing coatings, mill scale, dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants. ... Sandblasting does not remove all the salt from the substrate surface.

Can you TIG weld through mill scale?

You cannot use TIG welding to weld through mill scale and receive acceptable welding results, even if the mill scale is thin. TIG welding always needs a clean base metal.

Does mill scale affect welding?

During welding, mill scale hinders the flow of the liquid weld pool, often causing an undesirable weld appearance or contour. Mill scale also can impede penetration into the base material and cause a lack of fusion and weld inclusions.

Is mill scale magnetic?

Magnetic carrier additives are known to enhance the efficiency and performance of mixed fertilizers. Mill scale is one such magnetizing synergist that can be added to provide additional nourishment in fertilizers. It can also be used to remove silicon during the production of phosphate fertilizers.

Is mill scale toxic?

No Toxic Reproduction data available for Mill Scale as a mixture or its individual components. following a Single Exposure data was found for the components: Iron Oxide: May cause lung irritation. ... Silicon Dioxide: Single exposure to very high airborne levels may cause lung irritation in exposed humans.

Does stainless steel have mill scale?

Re: Removing Mill Scale from Stainless

Speaking of bar stock, Most of it is sold hot rolled, annealed and pickled. It doesn't generally have scale, but the surface is not smooth, and is often lightly pitted.

What is the blue coating on steel?

Millscale is a shiny, bluish iron oxide often present on the surface of the steel. It is produced by heat and pressure during manufacture. Millscale is often mistaken for a blue-toned shop primer or clean steel.

What temperature does scale form on steel?

During hot strip processing, tertiary scale forms on the steel sur- face after descaling or between each mill stand, at temperatures below 1000 °C.

Is hot rolled steel good for knife making?

It does not have the correct composition, and will never be a knife. merely a knife shaped object. If you want to forge it, make a bottle opener or something. but it cant be heat treated, so dont waste your time.

What are the advantages of hot rolled steel?

Hot rolling can greatly reduce energy consumption and costs. The metal plastic deformation is high during hot rolling, and the deformation resistance is low, which reduces the energy consumption of metal deformation. Hot rolling can improve the processing performance of metals and alloys.

Is cold rolled steel stronger than hot rolled?

Cold rolling produces steel with closer dimensional tolerances and a wider range of surface finishes than hot rolling. It is also up to 20% stronger than hot rolled through the use of strength hardening. When making more precise shapes, the process involves: Breakdown.

Can I paint hot rolled steel?

Hot rolled structural steel shapes are coated with a thin layer of iron oxide during the rolling process. ... Protective painting of steel depends on proper preparation work and, subsequently, on good coating adhesion.

Will a needle scaler remove mill scale?

A needlegun scaler, needle scaler or needle-gun is a tool used to remove rust, mill scale, and old paint from metal surfaces.

How do you prepare hot rolled steel for painting?

Dip in baking soda solution and rinse/ dry / prime. Baking soda is required, to keep the pieces from rusting immediately after rinsing. when assembly prior to welding, just grind off the edges to be welded (would do that anyway), or use weld through primer (never tried that).
