COVID-19Common question

Transmission of COVID-19 from inhalation of virus in the air can occur at distances greater than six feet. Particles from an infected person can move throughout an entire room or indoor space. The particles can also linger in the air after a person has left the room – they can remain airborne for hours in some cases.

How long can COVID-19 linger in the air?

The smallest very fine droplets, and aerosol particles formed when these fine droplets rapidly dry, are small enough that they can remain suspended in the air for minutes to hours.

Does COVID-19 live in the air?

Research shows that the virus can live in the air for up to 3 hours. It can get into your lungs if someone who has it breathes out and you breathe that air in.

How long can COVID-19 survive on surfaces?

Data from surface survival studies indicate that a 99% reduction in infectious SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses can be expected under typical indoor environmental conditions within 3 days (72 hours) on common non-porous surfaces like stainless steel, plastic, and glass .

How does COVID-19 airborne transmission occur?

There is evidence that under certain conditions, people with COVID-19 seem to have infected others who were more than 6 feet away. This is called airborne transmission. These transmissions occurred in indoor spaces with inadequate ventilation. In general, being outdoors and in spaces with good ventilation reduces the risk of exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19.

How are close contact and airborne transmission of COVID-19 similar?

For both forms of COVID-19 disease transmission – close contact and airborne – it's respiratory droplets containing the virus that spread illness. Everyone produces respiratory droplets, which are tiny, moist particles that are expelled from the nose or mouth when you cough, sneeze, talk, shout, sing or exhale deeply.

What is the main way of transmission of COVID-19?

The principal mode by which people are infected with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) is through exposure to respiratory droplets carrying infectious virus.

Can the coronavirus be transmitted through surfaces?

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

How long does COVID-19 survive on clothes?

Research suggests that COVID-19 doesn’t survive for long on clothing, compared to hard surfaces, and exposing the virus to heat may shorten its life. A study published in found that at room temperature, COVID-19 was detectable on fabric for up to two days, compared to seven days for plastic and metal.

How soon can surfaces that have been exposed to COVID-19 be handled?

Isolate papers or any soft (porous) surfaces for a minimum of 24 hours before handling. After 24 hours, remove soft materials from the area and clean the hard (non-porous) surfaces per the cleaning and disinfection recommendations.

How long does COVID-19 stay active at room temperature?

A study published in found that at room temperature, COVID-19 was detectable on fabric for up to two days, compared to seven days for plastic and metal.

Can COVID-19 spread through breathing and talking?

The study reported that even breathing or talking could possibly release tiny particles (Bioaerosols) carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID 19. The team explained that the virus can stay suspended in the air in the ultrafine mist that is produced when infected people exhale.

How should I wash my cloth COVID-19 mask?

Using a washing machine

Include your mask with your regular laundry. Use regular laundry detergent and the appropriate settings according to the fabric label.

By hand

Wash your mask with tap water and laundry detergent or soap. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove detergent or soap.

Can COVID-19 survive on food or packaging?

Like other viruses, it is possible that the virus that causes COVID-19 can survive on surfaces or objects. If you are concerned about contamination of food or food packaging, wash your hands after handling food packaging, after removing food from the packaging, before you prepare food for eating and before you eat.

Does COVID-19 have an effect on your skin?

Cutaneous illnesses due to SARS-CoV-2 have been rising worldwide. These diseases typically fall into five different patterns, which include maculopapular rash, vesicular rash, pseudo-chilblain, livedo or necrosis, and urticaria. A red rash and urticaria are considered to be the most common manifestations of COVID-19.

What is the risk of contracting COVID-19 from surface transmission?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that the danger of contracting COVID-19 from surface transmission is low.

An update released April 5 showed that the risk of surface, or fomite, transmission of the disease is low compared with direct contact, droplet transmission, or airborne transmission.

Which types of settings does COVID-19 spread more easily?

The “Three C's” are a useful way to think about this. They describe settings where transmission of the COVID-19 virus spreads more easily:

• Crowded places;
• Close-contact settings, especially where people have conversations very near each other;
• Confined and enclosed spaces with poor ventilation.

Is COVID-19 transmitted through droplets?

COVID-19 is primarily transmitted from person-to-person through respiratory droplets. These droplets are released when someone with COVID-19 sneezes, coughs, or talks. Infectious droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

How does COVID-19 spread indoors?

Indoors, the very fine droplets and particles will continue to spread through the air in the room or space and can accumulate.

Since COVID-19 is transmitted through contact with respiratory fluids carrying the infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus, a person can be exposed by an infected person coughing or speaking near them.

Can I still have sex during the coronavirus pandemic?

If both of you are healthy and feeling well, are practicing social distancing and have had no known exposure to anyone with COVID-19, touching, hugging, kissing, and sex are more likely to be safe.

How is close contact defined in the context of COVID-19?

Close contact is defined as someone who was within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more within 2 days prior to illness onset, regardless of whether the contact was wearing a mask.

Can you contract COVID-19 through sexual intercourse?

Although there is currently no evidence that the COVID-19 virus transmits through semen or vaginal fluids, it has been detected in the semen of people recovering from COVID-19. We would thus recommend avoiding any close contact, especially very intimate contact like unprotected sex, with someone with active COVID-19 to minimize the risk of transmission

How should I wash my mask and how often?

The CDC recommends washing your mask after each use, and you can wash it in a washing machine or by hand.

If using a washing machine, don't be afraid to wash your mask along with your regular laundry — with standard laundry detergent and the warmest water the cloth material of your mask can handle.

How often should reusable face masks be cleaned during COVID-19?

The CDC recommends reusable face masks be washed after each use and provides information on the cleaning of cloth face masks.
