Enormous amounts of electrical energy are produced during an aurora when millions of amperes of electric currents pass through the atmosphere and generate nearly 900 billion watts of energy - mostly in heat but about a few percent in light. Picture Gallary Many people enjoy the challenge of photographing the aurora.

Are Auroras hot or cold?

The northern lights look like fire, but they wouldn't feel like one. Even though the temperature of the upper atmosphere can reach thousands of degrees Fahrenheit, the heat is based on the average speed of the molecules.

Does aurora borealis make electricity?

As the Northern Lights flash, they send 100,000-ampere electric currents throughout the northern upper atmosphere. ... Excited by outbursts of solar particles, the changing auroral fields can interact with the ground to knock out electric power transmission grids as far south as Texas.

What effect can Auroras have on earth?

The solar wind adds its own magnetic energy to that of the Earth and when they combine they can blow out electric wires and cables! The Earth's atmosphere actually expands slightly when aurorae are around. This means that any low-flying satellites can hit the upper atmosphere.

What aurora borealis causes?

Auroras occur when charged particles (electrons and protons) collide with gases in Earth's upper atmosphere. Those collisions produce tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light. ... That is why auroras occur almost every night in the northern sky, from August to May.

What is an aurora? - Michael Molina

Do the northern lights happen every night?

There is no official season since the Northern Lights are almost always present, day and night. Caused by charged particles from the sun hitting atoms in Earth's atmosphere and releasing photons, it's a process that happens constantly.

What is Arora?

The Arora is a community of Punjab, comprising both Hindus and Sikhs. The name is derived from their native place Aror. Historically, the Arora section of the Khatri community had been principally found in West Punjab, in the districts to the south and west of Lahore.

Can auroras harm us?

The Northern Lights occur so high up in the atmosphere that they don't pose any threat to people watching them from the ground. The aurora itself is not harmful to humans but the electrically charged particles produced could have some potentially negative effects to infrastructure and technology.

How does the Sun affect the aurora borealis?

Even though auroras are best seen at night, they are actually caused by the Sun. The Sun sends us more than heat and light; it sends lots of other energy and small particles our way. The protective magnetic field around Earth shields us from most of the energy and particles, and we don't even notice them.

What are Sun Auroras?

An aurora is a colorful light show in the sky caused by the Sun. Auroras happen when particles from the Sun interact with gases in our atmosphere, causing beautiful displays of light in the sky. Auroras are often seen in areas near the North Pole or South Pole.

How hot are solar winds?

The solar wind is a stream of energized, charged particles, primarily electrons and protons, flowing outward from the Sun, through the solar system at speeds as high as 900 km/s and at a temperature of 1 million degrees (Celsius).

How do the aurora lights work?

Bottom line: When charged particles from the sun strike atoms in Earth's atmosphere, they cause electrons in the atoms to move to a higher-energy state. When the electrons drop back to a lower energy state, they release a photon: light. This process creates the beautiful aurora, or northern lights.

What are the effects of the Northern Lights?

Northern Lights produces euphoric effects that settle in firmly throughout the body, relaxing muscles and easing the mind. Consumers say this strain has a pungently sweet and spicy flavor profile that is smooth on the exhale.

How hot is a aurora?

According to that source, the temperature of the electron plasma in an aurora ranges from 500 K to 1400 K. Note, however, that the density, and therefore the total heat capacity, of the plasma is very low; the altitude at which auroras occur is practically outer space.

Is the aurora borealis bad?

This solar activity is very dangerous for astronauts out in space, since they're out of the Earth's magnetic field protection. However, the Northern Lights are not dangerous to us thanks to the natural protection of our planet.

Why is aurora Borealis important?

NASA studies aurora as they are visible markers of space weather processes around Earth. ... When the solar wind reaches Earth's magnetic field, it can cause magnetic reconnection, an explosive process that allows charged particles from space to accelerate into the atmosphere.

Why is Aurora Borealis only in the North?

Of the two poles, the aurora can be seen the strongest near the arctic circle in the Northern Hemisphere. The reason that the Aurora can only be seen at the poles has to do with how the Earth's magnetic field acts. The Earth has a metal core and acts much like a bar magnet with two poles and a magnetic field.

Do solar flares cause auroras?

Solar flares can provide very powerful outbreaks of the Northern Lights. Northern Lights hunters look particularly for one type of solar flare, which is called a coronal mass ejection (or CME). ... These areas are called auroral ovals; the Northern Lights Oval and the Southern Lights Oval.

Why is the aurora borealis green?

The most common color seen in the Northern Lights is green. When the solar wind hits millions of oxygen atoms in the Earth's atmosphere at the same time, it excites the oxygen atoms for a time and they decay back to their original state, when they emit the green hue we can see from the ground.

Does aurora mean Rose?

The name Aurora is primarily a female name of Latin origin that means Dawn. ... Aurora Borealis is a name for the Northern Lights. Nicknames for Aurora include Arie, Rory, and Aura. The most famous fictional Aurora is Princess Aurora from Disney's Sleeping Beauty also known as Briar Rose.

How does aurora look like?

They can look like an orange or red glow on the horizon -- like a sunrise or sunset. Sometimes they may be mistaken for fires in the distance, like the American Indians thought. They can look like curtains or ribbons and move and undulate during the night. Auroras can be green, red or blue.

How can you tell if there is aurora borealis?

The aurora is at its most active around the equinoxes in March and September. The Northern Lights most commonly appear between 17:00 and 02:00. They don't usually exhibit for long – they may only show for a few minutes, then glide away before returning.

Is Chawla a high caste?

Chawla is a Punjabi Arora-Khatri surname among Hindus from Ancient Times. Chawla Clan of Arora ruled the Kingdom Aror and are part of Arora Kshatriya (Khatri) Royal Clan. It originates from the name of a clan of the Arora caste, likely stemming from the crop word chawal, which means rice.

What is Aurora in thermosphere?

The aurora (Northern Lights and Southern Lights) mostly occur in the thermosphere. The thermosphere is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere. ... It extends from about 90 km (56 miles) to between 500 and 1,000 km (311 to 621 miles) above our planet.

Is Aurora a flower?

In Roman mythology, Aurora was the goddess of the dawn. By association, the flowers and plants that have an “aurora” designation share the qualities of beauty and brightness that define their namesake. Most aurora flowers bloom during the spring, which symbolizes a new dawn.
