On a 350, it's just a kick down cable, no problems. One an 700R4, it's a throttle position cable and if it's not hooked up it will burn up the transmission.

Does a Turbo 350 transmission have a kickdown cable?

the "kickdown" is NOT that. It's a TV cable, which operates the Throttle Valve inside the transmission, and is NECESSARY to be installed and PROPERLY adjusted so you don't burn up the transmission.

Is a kickdown cable necessary for Turbo 350?

See all 8 photos Other than the convenience of automatic downshifts into passing gear at highway speeds, there's no real need for a simple kickdown cable on those transmissions like this TH350 that have a vacuum modulator. "Kickdown" and "TV" cables aren't really the same thing.

Do you have to hook up the kickdown cable TH350?

Premium Member. The kickdown is just a way to downshift with your foot (what we used to call, "passing gear"). If it's not hooked up, you just manually downshift.

Can I drive without a kickdown cable?

Shouldn't be a problem. The cable adjusts system pressure, so shift pressure. With the cable fully retracted it will shift lazy/slip a lot, if the cable was pulled fully out it will shift more firmly, less slip.

How to Set The Carburetor to Transmission Kickdown On TH-350, TH400, And 700R4 Transmissions

How does a Turbo 350 kickdown cable work?

The kickdown function of General Motors vehicles equipped with the Turbo 350 automatic transmission is perhaps better known as "passing gear." As the accelerator is depressed, the throttle lever on the engine is drawn back by a cable, which in turn pulls another cable attached to the transmission, causing it to ...

Where is the kickdown cable located?

The kick down cable is mounted to the carburetor, or, in the case of fuel injected vehicles, the throttle body. It runs from the butterfly arm on the carburetor down to the side of the transmission, where it attaches to an arm that allows the transmission to shift gears.

How tight should the kickdown cable be?

you want the cable to just about tight at full throttle. so yes, there might be slack in it at part throttle.

What does kickdown cable do?

One component that helps both drive systems communicate is the kickdown cable. This device helps the engine relay information on revolutions per minute (RPM) to the automatic transmission and essentially tells it that it's time to shift gears.

Are all TH350 transmissions the same?

Externally, all the TH350 transmissions look the same; however, internally there are some differences. Depending on the engine size of the car the transmission was removed from, it can have anywhere from 10 to 18 friction discs and 10 to 18 steel clutch plates inside.

What is kickdown switch?

An electrical switch that is used to cause a transmission to downshift from a higher to a lower gear ratio.

How does a TH350 shift?

Re: How does the stock TH350 know when to shift? Up shifts occur when governer pressure rises. Down shifts occur via your detent cable. The vacuum modulator delays an upshift or forces a downshift.

Can you downshift TH350?

Re: TH350 Downshift

Make sure it pulls smoothly and springs back with no binding. It should downshift when you floor it at a speed below your 2nd gear top speed. Mine goes almost 70 in 2nd and it will easily kick down to 2nd if I floor it at 55 mph.

What happens if throttle cable is to tight?

Improper cable adjustment and slow acceleration response

When there is excess slack or the cable is too tight, this can cause intermittent delays in throttle response relative to pressing down on the accelerator pedal. ... This can cause more throttle to be applied unintentionally, creating a dangerous situation.

How much slack should my throttle cable have?

Most motorcycle manufacturers recommend about 2 to 3 millimeters of throttle free play, but over time the cables will stretch and settle into their housings and you'll end up with more slack.

What happens if throttle cable is too loose?

The tightness of the accelerator, or throttle, cable on any vehicle is important. If the cable is tightened too much, the car will not idle properly and consume fuel quickly. If the cable is too loose, the car will respond slowly when you press the gas pedal.

Does a Turbo 400 have a kickdown cable?

Instead of a linkage or cable, the TH400 uses an electrical switch that is most often mounted on the carburetor. ... The factory used a switch located on the carburetor or on the throttle linkage under the dash that at WOT supplied voltage to the transmission.

Do all automatic cars have kickdown?

Almost all automatic cars have the kickdown feature. Earlier automatics, or basic modern automatics simply have a switch that's activated by the driver pressing the accelerator pedal to the floor. When the switch is activated, kickdown occurs, resulting in the downshift of one gear.

How do I turn off kickdown cable?

Step 6: Disconnect the kickdown cable from the transmission hook. With the retaining bolt removed, gently pull up on the kickdown cable to expose the linkage that the cable is connected to. Twist the end of the kickdown cable to disengage it from the linkage.

How do you test a kickdown switch?

The kick down switch at the gas pedal can be tested with a multimeter(set on ohms). The solenoid in the pan can be tested by applying 12 volts to the vertical connection at the transmission and listening for a click emanating from the pan. You need to ground the transmission when you do that.

How do you adjust the modulator on a Turbo 350?

To adjust the shift points of the transmission, disconnect the vacuum hose. With a small flat blade screw driver turn the screw on the inside of the modulator end clockwise to raise the shift points and firm up the shifts. To lower the shift points turn the screw counter clockwise, this will also soften the shifts.

What is a transmission kickdown solenoid?

The kickback solenoid is located within the transmission of your car. It helps the car to down-shift easier, while at the same time maintaining the desired level of torque as well as speed. In some models, such as the Porsche, this solenoid process may be activated once the vehicle drops below a certain speed.
