It should be free from all contaminants such as methanol and keto groups from ethanol. Ethyl alcohol is the edible unless until it is denaturalized by adding consumption preventing substances.

Is methanol safe to drink?

Low concentrations of naturally present methanol are not harmful, but higher concentrations may be toxic. Since methanol is a product of fermentation, low levels of methanol are detected in all beer and spirits, but these low concentrations are not toxic when consumed.

Do alcoholic drinks have methanol?

Methanol is a widely available chemical, used as a solvent and a fuel, but is also found in trace, nontoxic amounts in fruit juices, according to the World Health Organization. It's also a product of fermentation and is found in both alcoholic and nonalcoholic fermented drinks.

Which is more harmful methanol or ethanol?

Is it safe to drink homemade alcohol?

As it turns out, homebrewed beer probably wouldn't hurt you, because the simple fermentation produces only ethanol, not its toxic cousin methanol, said Gary Glass, president of the American Homebrewer's Association. Even contaminated homebrewed beer can't make you sick, he said.
