Conditions that may cause leukopenia Viral infections: Acute viral infections, such as colds and influenza may lead to temporary leukopenia. In the short term, a viral infection may disrupt the production of white blood cells in a person's bone marrow.

Can a viral infection cause low white blood cell count?

Infection: Viruses can affect your bone marrow and cause low WBCs for a while. Severe infections, like blood infections, can lead to your body using up WBCs faster than it can make them. HIV kills a specific kind of white blood cell. Medicines: Some drugs, including antibiotics, can destroy WBCs.

Does a virus affect white blood cell count?

One of the most common causes of a low white blood cell count is a viral infection. These infections can sometimes temporarily disrupt the bone marrow's production of blood cells, so blood cell counts drop. The counts typically rebound as the body recovers from the infection.

What type of infection leads to leukopenia?

Infectious diseases that can cause leukopenia include: HIV or AIDS. tuberculosis.

What causes leukopenia?

Leukopenia can be related to a number of factors including: Aplastic anemia – A condition where the bone marrow doesn't produce new blood cells. Autoimmune disorders – Conditions that attack the white blood cells or bone marrow cells, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

Is leukopenia considered immunocompromised?

This may be caused due to certain medications, chemotherapy for cancer, radiation therapy for cancer, surgery, stem cell transplant, bone marrow transplant, steroids, cancer itself, some genetic conditions as well as autoimmune diseases. This is called immunosuppression as leukopenia leads to a weakened immunity.

What WBC indicates viral infection?

On the other hand, if you have low levels of neutrophils (30%) and high levels of lymphocytes (60%), this is a sign that you have a viral infection. You should ask your doctor about your white blood cell differential, as it may tell you whether you have a bacterial infection or a viral infection.

Can viral infection cause leukocytosis?

1,14 Viral infections may cause leukocytosis early in their course, but a sustained leukocytosis is not typical, except for the lymphocytosis in some childhood viral infections.

Why does sepsis cause leukopenia?

Cytopenias during sepsis may result from decreased bone marrow production or increased destruction [12]. In the bone marrow, both leukopenia and thrombocytopenia may arise due to maturation arrest, inadequate bone marrow supply of progenitors [6], or hemophagocytosis [13].

What viruses cause low WBC?

Conditions that may cause leukopenia

Viral infections: Acute viral infections, such as colds and influenza may lead to temporary leukopenia. In the short term, a viral infection may disrupt the production of white blood cells in a person's bone marrow.

Why does WBC decrease in viral infection?

White blood cells are manufactured in bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside some of your larger bones. A low white blood cell count usually is caused by: Viral infections that temporarily disrupt the work of bone marrow.

Can flu shot lower white blood cell count?

There were no significant changes in the levels of haemoglobin, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils or platelets after vaccination, but the total WBC counts (mean +/- SD, 6.86 +/- 1.52) and lymphocyte counts (1.69 +/- 0.61) were significantly lower at 4 weeks than at baseline (7.22 +/- 1.60 [P = 0.02] and 1.86 +/- 0.62 ...

What viral infections disrupt bone marrow?

Viral infections that affect bone marrow can play a role in the development of aplastic anemia. Viruses that have been linked to aplastic anemia include hepatitis, Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus, parvovirus B19 and HIV. Pregnancy. Your immune system might attack your bone marrow during pregnancy.

Can a bacterial infection cause low white blood cells?

Anything that disrupts normal neutrophil production, increases destruction of neutrophils or causes abnormal storage of neutrophils can result in neutropenia. While all white blood cells help your body fight infection, neutrophils are important for fighting certain infections, especially those caused by bacteria.

How long does neutropenia last after viral infection?

Generally, neutropenia improves during this period and examination of bone marrow is not needed. However, neutropenias which develop secondary to infection rarely last for longer than eight weeks and may persist for up to one year.

What is the difference between leukocytosis and leukopenia?

Leukocytosis is an elevation in the absolute WBC count (>10,000 cells/μL). Leukopenia is a reduction in the WBC count (<3500 cells/μL).

Can viral infection cause Neutrophilia?

Although viral infections generally do not cause neutrophilia, it can occur during the early phases of infection (see below under "lymphocytosis").

Can rheumatic fever cause leukopenia?

Autoimmune leukopenia can occur with rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus from autoantibodies destroying leukocytes, most commonly the neutrophil.

Do viruses show up in blood tests?

US Pharm. 2013;38(10):6. Durham, NC—Researchers at Duke University have developed a blood test that can determine whether respiratory illness is caused by a bacterial infection or a virus, with over 90% accuracy.

What blood test indicates viral infection?

Serology testing for the presence of virus-elicited antibodies in blood is one of the methods used commonly for clinical diagnosis of viral infections.

Can a virus cause low neutrophils?

The most common causes of neutropenia are viral infections (such as chicken pox or the flu). If children are neutropenic at the time of an acute viral infection, a repeat CBC should be obtained three to four weeks later to evaluate for resolution of neutropenia.

Can leukopenia turn into leukemia?

Neutropenia that has been present since childhood may indicate the presence of a congenital syndrome. Leukopenia that develops acutely should prompt an evaluation for drug-induced agranulocytosis, acute infections, or acute leukemia.

Can you donate blood if you have leukopenia?

Regular blood donation not only affects red cell parameters but also those of white cells. Subclinical leukopenia is present among regular blood donors in this locality. First-time blood donors would be most preferable when the concentrated white blood cell component of blood needs to be prepared.

Can flu shots cause neutropenia?

Both in our clinical trials and in the literature review, several cases of neutropenia have been reported, in the first two weeks after vaccination. However, neutropenia was generally transient and had a benign clinical outcome, after vaccination with either multiple novel candidates or well-known licensed vaccines.
