In a TED Talk article available online, zoologist Lucy Cooke states that the life of the freshwater eel begins in the Bermuda Triangle and they then make their way to continental waters. ... "We definitely have seen eels that have reproductive organs—we are reproducing eels in captivity," he said.

Where do eels reproduce?

New Zealand longfin eels breed only once at the end of their lives, making a journey of thousands of kilometres from New Zealand to their spawning grounds near Tonga. Their eggs (of which each female eel produces between 1 and 20 million) are fertilized in an unknown manner, but probably in deep tropical water.

Do eels spawn in the Bermuda Triangle?

Despite its name, the life of a freshwater eel actually begins in the salty waters of the Bermuda Triangle. At the height of the annual cyclone season, thousands of three-millimeter eel larvae drift out of the Sargasso Sea.

Do eels have a reproductive system?

No one had seen them laying eggs, giving birth, or mating. To add to the mystery, eels lack genitalia and determining their sex requires dissection and careful examination of their gonads. The surprise to early scientists was that males appeared to not exist.

What did eels evolve from?

Ancestral eels evolved during the Eocene or earlier, in the western Pacific Ocean near present-day Indonesia. A group derived from this ancestor dispersed westward, by transport of larvae in the global circum-equatorial current through the northern edge of the Tethys Sea.

Do all eels go to the Sargasso Sea?

American eels are the only species of freshwater eel found in North America. ... Eels have a complex lifecycle that begins far offshore in the Sargasso Sea where adults spawn. After eggs hatch, young eels drift inland with ocean currents into streams, rivers and lakes for over 3,700 miles. This journey may take many years.

How are electric eels born?

Males fertilize the eggs, which can add up to 1,700 each year by the female. Once the eggs are in the nest and fertilized, the eels die. The eggs slowly hatch, floating to the surface of the water after they become larvae.

Why can't eels breed in captivity?

In the wild, the European eel larvae are carried by currents from the Sargasso Sea to the shores of western Europe. It is a long and hazardous journey. ... In captivity (or in European waters), eels do not breed naturally because of this inhibition of the development of their reproductive organs.

Where do eels swarm?

Deep-sea explorers have found the largest collection of fish ever seen in the abyssal zone of the ocean, which stretches from 3000 to 6000 metres deep.

Are eels aliens?

Well, there are many things that might lead you to believe they are a species from another planet. Yep, aliens.

Do we not know how eels reproduce?

It is mostly true that scientists don't know the full reproductive cycle of eels in the wild. The caveat is that, contrary to claims made on social media, they have been observed reproducing in captivity and their sexual organs have also been observed.

Which eels breed in the Sargasso Sea?

In the early 1900s, Danish researcher Johannes Schmidt identified the Sargasso Sea as the most likely spawning grounds for European eels.

Do Japanese eels come from the Sargasso Sea?

In comparison, American eels seem to spawn in an overlapping, but narrower longitudinal area in the southwest Sargasso Sea [10], and Japanese eels spawn in an even smaller area west of a seamount ridge [8].

Can humans produce electricity like eels?

Fish with exotic powers have long captured the imagination. Although structurally similar to batteries, the electric organs (EO) of the fish who wield them are operationally more like the Marx generators. ...

Did humans evolve from eels?

A prehistoric eel-like creature discovered in a Canadian shale bed has been identified as the earliest known ancestor of man. ... As the precursor of vertebrates the species is also believed to be the direct ancestor of all members of the chordate family, which includes fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.
