No matter what the base mineral is, I would not soak it in water as it has a Mohs hardness of 3-3.5 (Bornite) or 3.5-4 (Calcoprite) which is quite soft, and may dissolve over time. You can wipe it clean with a damp cloth if you need to though!

Can you tumble peacock ore?

On rereading your post, tumbling with just water might have caused further oxidation, making a thicker film and changing the color. If you want to make a peacock ore cab, you can try grinding down the mineral to the desired shape, and then reoxidizing it.

What is peacock ore made of?

Part of Hall of Planet Earth. This massive ore is composed of the copper-rich sulfide minerals covellite (purple and blue) and bornite (blue-black). Flowing, copper-rich water transformed a copper-poor rock into this unusually copper-rich ore.

Is chalcopyrite the same as peacock ore?

Chalcopyrite is also known as Peacock Ore because of its lovely iridescent green, blue, pink, purple, and gold colors that resemble the feathers of a peacock. The colors of Chalcopyrite come from the oxidation of copper and iron in the crystal. It's a common mineral that can be found in most sulfide deposits.

Can you wash chalcopyrite?

Dilute hydrochloric acid will bring back the golden colour in minutes. Wash the specimen thoroughly afterwards and then soak it in water for a day to get rid of the remaining traces of acid.

How can you tell if a Birthite is real?

On genuine bornite, the broken surface will be brown and tarnish very quickly. On chalcopyrite, the inside will be a shiny silver/gold, metallic-looking surface, and will remain that color. Reconstituted amber, which has likely been dyed as well.

Why is bornite called peacock ore?

Bornite is an important copper ore (it is both a copper and iron sulfide mineral). It forms brittle, granular, or compact masses that on fresh fractures are metallic and brassy. Upon exposure to moisture, bornite tarnishes to a purplish iridescence, for which reason it is commonly called peacock ore.

Is peacock ore a rock or mineral?

Bornite, also known as peacock ore, is a sulfide mineral with chemical composition Cu₅FeS₄ that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system (pseudo-cubic).

Does bornite contain gold?

The amount of gold in bornite is also strongly dependent on the composition of bornite, being highest in ''stoichiometric'' bornite compositions (Cu5FeS4), and decreasing toward Cu-rich and Cu-poor compositions.

Where is peacock ore found in the world?

It occurs globally in copper ores with significant crystal locations in Butte, Montana, and U.S. Bristol, Connecticut. It is also gathered in Cornwall, England from the Carn Brea mine, Illogan, and elsewhere.

Is bornite rare or common?

Bornite is an important copper ore mineral. It ranks up there with many of the other copper ores such as chalcocite, chalcopyrite, covellite, digenite, cuprite and tetrahedrite. As a mineral specimen, bornite is usually lacking. Good crystals are rare and thus bornite is commonly known as simply a massive mineral ore.

Is copper an iron?
