Yes, a Hibernate Entity class can be declared final, however it is not a good practice. Hibernate uses the proxy pattern for performance improvement during lazy association, by making an entity final, Hibernate will no longer be able to use a proxy as Java doesn't allow the final class to be extended.

Why do we need entity classes?

Some reasons for using entities are: When the key is a property of an entity object representing the record as a whole, the object's identity and concept are often clearer than with key and value objects that are disjoint. A single entity object per record is often more convenient to use than two objects.

How do entity classes differ from design classes?

A class is a template for an object (among other things), and is a very general concept. An entity has more semantic significance and is usually tied to a concept (possibly about a real object for example, an Employee or a Student or a Music Album) and is linked to business logic.
