Intraveneous pyelogram (IVP) is a series of X-rays of the kidney, ureters, and bladder with the injection of a contrast dye into the vein. The images are used to detect tumors, abnormalities, kidney stones, or any obstructions, and to assess renal blood flow.

What does an intravenous pyelogram show?

An intravenous pyelogram (PIE-uh-low-gram), also called an excretory urogram, is an X-ray exam of your urinary tract. An intravenous pyelogram lets your doctor view your kidneys, your bladder and the tubes that carry urine from your kidneys to your bladder (ureters).

What organs does the IVP show?

IVP is an x-ray exam that uses a special dye to outline the kidneys, ureters and bladder. It can show how your renal and urinary system handles fluid waste. This helps your health care team find problems in the urinary tract.

What is an IVP CT scan?

CT Intravenous Pyelogram (CT IVP or CT Urogram) is an exam that uses an injection of contrast material into the veins followed by Computed Tomography imaging to evaluate kidneys, ureters, and bladder. The exam helps to diagnose urinary tract disorders such as kidney stones, urinary tract obstruction, or cancer.

What are the structures visualized in IVU?

Intravenous urography (IVU), also referred to as intravenous pyelography (IVP) or excretory urography (EU), is a radiographic study of the renal parenchyma, pelvicalyceal system, ureters and the urinary bladder. This exam has been largely replaced by CT urography.

Your Radiologist Explains: Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)

What is IV test?

Intravenous pyelogram (IVP) is an x-ray exam that uses an injection of contrast material to evaluate your kidneys, ureters and bladder and help diagnose blood in the urine or pain in your side or lower back. An IVP may provide enough information to allow your doctor to treat you with medication and avoid surgery.

What is cystoscopy retrograde pyelogram?

A retrograde pyelogram is an imaging test that uses X-rays to look at your bladder, ureters, and kidneys. The ureters are the long tubes that connect your kidneys to your bladder. This test is usually done during a test called cystoscopy. It uses an endoscope, which is a long, flexible, lighted tube.

What is a Pyelogram test?

What is an intravenous pyelogram (IVP)? An IVP is an imaging test used to look at the kidneys and ureters. The ureters are the narrow tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. During the test, the radiologist injects a contrast dye into one of your veins.

What is CT Pyelogram?

Urography uses imaging and contrast material to evaluate or detect blood in urine, kidney or bladder stones, and cancer in the urinary tract. Urography with conventional x-ray is known as intravenous pyelogram (IVP). Urography is also often performed using computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

What is a Cystography test?

Cystography is an imaging test that can help diagnose problems in your bladder. It uses X-rays. They may be X-ray pictures or fluoroscopy, a kind of X-ray "movie."

How long does a Pyelogram take?

An IVP usually takes less than 1 hour. If your kidneys work more slowly, the test can last up to 4 hours. You should be able to go back to your normal diet and activities afterward. The doctor may tell you to drink more fluids than normal to flush the contrast dye from your body.

What blood test results do you need to check before she has an IVP?

To avoid this complication, the kidney function should be tested with a blood test for creatinine, and the results should be known before the IVP is performed. Those with diabetes who are taking metformin (Glucophage) will have to discontinue this medication prior to and for 2 days after the IVP.

What is the difference between KUB and IVP?

Unlike a kidneys, ureters, and bladder x-ray (KUB), which is a plain (that is, noncontrast) radiograph, an IVP uses contrast to highlight the urinary tract.

What is a CT Urogram used for?

A computerized tomography (CT) urogram is an imaging exam used to evaluate the urinary tract. The urinary tract includes the kidneys, bladder and the tubes (ureters) that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

How do you protect your kidneys from contrast dye?

The inexpensive drug, called N-acetylcysteine, can prevent serious kidney damage that can be caused by the iodine-containing “dyes” that doctors use to enhance the quality of such scans. That “dye,” called contrast agent, is usually given intravenously before a CT scan, angiogram or other test.

Why do they put dye in kidneys?

This is very useful for diagnosis, since the blockages in blood vessels can be hard to see without the dye. Doctors also use contrast dye during other blood vessel procedures so they can see the blood vessels they are treating. But, sometimes the dye can cause serious problems in the kidneys.

Why would a urologist order a CT scan?

The CT scan is used by doctors to see and evaluate cross-sectional slices of tissue and organs. It is one of the best tools for diagnosing problems in the urinary tract and renal systems. It combines X-rays and computer calculations for detailed images.

Why does fluid intake need to be pushed after an intravenous pyelogram?

After Your Procedure

You may resume your regular diet. It is important for you to drink plenty of fluids after your exam (if you are not on a fluid restriction) to flush the dye through your system. Your doctor will be contacted with the results of your test and will discuss the results with you.

Is a CT Urogram painful?

It is usually painless. After the urogram, the doctor will remove the cannula from the person's arm. The person must stay in the hospital for around 15–30 minutes to make sure that they have no reaction to the contrast dye and are feeling well.

Is cystoscopy considered surgery?

Cystoscopy is a surgical procedure. This is done to see the inside of the bladder and urethra using a thin, lighted tube.

What test do they inject dye?

A myelogram is an invasive diagnostic test that uses x-rays to examine the spinal canal. A special dye is injected into the spinal canal through a hollow needle. An x-ray fluoroscope then records the images formed by the dye. Myelograms can show conditions affecting the spinal cord and nerves within the spinal canal.

Do they put you to sleep for a cystoscopy?

Rigid cystoscopy. A rigid cystoscopy is where a cystoscope that does not bend is used. You're either put to sleep for the procedure or the lower half of your body is numbed while it's carried out.

Is pyelogram same as Urogram?

Pyelogram refers to the images produced of the internal structure of the kidneys, the collecting systems, and the tubes leading from the kidneys to the bladder, the ureters. With newer techniques, it is possible to get better detail of the whole of the kidney, and the name was changed to Urogram.

How long does a cystoscopy with retrograde pyelogram?

A retrograde pyelogram usually takes less than 30 minutes to perform. It can take an hour or more to recover afterward, depending on the type of anesthesia used for the test. You should expect to take a total of about two hours including paperwork. Plan on having someone drive you home after the test.

Is retrograde pyelogram painful?

A retrograde pyelogram is a quick, relatively painless procedure that helps identify abnormalities in your urinary tract.
