Lava that hardens on the surface is called an extrusion. The rock layers below an extrusion are always older than the extrusion. ... There, the magma cools and hardens into a mass of igneous rock called an intrusion. An intrusion is always younger than the rock layers around and beneath it.

What is the difference between an intrusion and an extrusion?

An intrusion is any body of intrusive igneous rock, formed from magma that cools and solidifies within the crust of the planet. In contrast, an extrusion consists of extrusive rock, formed above the surface of the crust.

Which type of intrusion is a batholith?

A batholith (from Ancient Greek bathos 'depth', and lithos 'rock') is a large mass of intrusive igneous rock (also called plutonic rock), larger than 100 km² (40 sq mi) in area, that forms from cooled magma deep in Earth's crust.

What are extrusions in geology?

Sometimes magma can force itself through a crack or fault in the rock at the Earth's surface. It pours out over the Earth's surface in a volcanic eruption. This process is called extrusion. The rocks that form from extruded magma are called extrusive igneous rocks.

What are igneous rock extrusions and intrusions?

Igneous rock forms when magma or lava hardens. Lava that hardens on the surface is called an extrusion. The rock layers below an extrusion are always older than the extrusion. Beneath the surface, magma may push into bodies of rock. There, the magma cools and hardens into a mass of igneous rock called an intrusion.

Magma Intrusions & Extrusions

What does intrusion mean in science?

An intrusion is a body of igneous (created under intense heat) rock that has crystallized from molten magma. Gravity influences the placement of igneous rocks because it acts on the density differences between the magma and the surrounding wall rocks (country or local rocks).

Is igneous intrusive?

Intrusive, or plutonic, igneous rock forms when magma is trapped deep inside the Earth. ... Intrusive rocks have a coarse grained texture. Extrusive Igneous Rocks: Extrusive, or volcanic, igneous rock is produced when magma exits and cools above (or very near) the Earth's surface.

What is a concordant intrusion?

Intrusive structures are often classified according to their relation to the country rock they have intruded. If magma has filled up parallel spaces between the bedding planes of the country rock it is called concordant. If an intrusion cuts right across the original strata or foliation it is called discordant.

Are dikes intrusive or extrusive?

Dikes. A dike is an intrusive rock that generally occupies a discordant, or cross‐cutting, crack or fracture that crosses the trend of layering in the country rock.

How are igneous intrusions formed?

Igneous intrusions form when magma cools and solidifies before it reaches the surface. Three common types of intrusion are sills, dykes, and batholiths (see image below).

Is an intrusion younger than a fault?

The principle of cross-cutting relationships states that a fault or intrusion is younger than the rocks that it cuts. ... So the fault must be the youngest formation that is seen. The intrusion (D) cuts through the three sedimentary rock layers, so it must be younger than those layers.

What rock is intrusive?

intrusive rock, also called plutonic rock, igneous rock formed from magma forced into older rocks at depths within the Earth's crust, which then slowly solidifies below the Earth's surface, though it may later be exposed by erosion. Igneous intrusions form a variety of rock types.

Is a dike vertical or horizontal?

Dikes are usually high-angle to near-vertical in orientation, but subsequent tectonic deformation may rotate the sequence of strata through which the dike propagates so that the dike becomes horizontal. Near-horizontal, or conformable intrusions, along bedding planes between strata are called intrusive sills.

Are dikes igneous?

Dikes are made of igneous rock or sedimentary rock. Igneous rock is formed after magma, the hot, semi-liquid substance that spews from volcanoes, cools and eventually becomes solid. Magmatic dikes are formed from igneous rock.

What are dikes and sills?

In geology, a sill is a tabular sheet intrusion that has intruded between older layers of sedimentary rock, beds of volcanic lava or tuff, or along the direction of foliation in metamorphic rock. ... In contrast, a dike is a discordant intrusive sheet, which does cut across older rocks.

What do you mean by Phacolith?

: a lens-shaped mass of igneous rock intruded in folded sedimentary beds with which it is approximately concordant and having its greatest thickness along the axes of synclines or anticlines.

What is sill or sheet?

Sill, also called sheet, flat intrusion of igneous rock that forms between preexisting layers of rock. Sills occur in parallel to the bedding of the other rocks that enclose them, and, though they may have vertical to horizontal orientations, nearly horizontal sills are the most common.

Where are igneous intrusions found?

Intrusions have a wide variety of forms and compositions, illustrated by examples like the Palisades Sill of New York and New Jersey; the Henry Mountains of Utah; the Bushveld Igneous Complex of South Africa; Shiprock in New Mexico; the Ardnamurchan intrusion in Scotland; and the Sierra Nevada Batholith of California.

Is Obsidian an igneous rock?

Rondi: Everyone, meet Obsidian , an igneous rock that from melted rock, or magma. Obsidian is an "extrusive” rock, which means it is made from magma that erupted out of a volcano.

Is a dike a pluton?

Pluton, body of intrusive igneous rock the size, composition, shape, or exact type of which is in doubt; when such characteristics are known, more limiting terms can be used. Thus, plutons include dikes, laccoliths, batholiths, sills, and other forms of intrusions.

What is intrusion and examples?

The definition of an intrusion is an unwelcome interruption or a situation where somewhere private has an unwelcome visit or addition. When you are having a quiet nap in your backyard and your neighbor's dog comes in uninvited and jumps all over you to wake you up, this is an example of an intrusion.

Does intrusion mean below ground?

An intrusion is liquid rock that forms under Earth's surface. Magma from under the surface is slowly pushed up from deep within the earth into any cracks or spaces it can find, sometimes pushing existing country rock out of the way, a process that can take millions of years.

Are intrusions older or younger?

An intrusion is always younger than the rock layers around and beneath it. ... A fault is always younger than the rock it cuts through. The surface where new rock layers meet a much older rock surface beneath them is called an unconformity.

What are the characteristics of dyke?

dike, also called dyke or geological dike, in geology, tabular or sheetlike igneous body that is often oriented vertically or steeply inclined to the bedding of preexisting intruded rocks; similar bodies oriented parallel to the bedding of the enclosing rocks are called sills.
