Kegs are sealed to contain the liquid and pressurized gas for storage and transportation. Most beer is served carbonated, and this is most easily accomplished by storing it carbonated as well.

How much pressure is in a beer keg?

Most ales and lagers produced in the US should be dispensed at 10 – 12 PSI. Stout and other nitrogen-reliant keg beers are usually dispensed at 25 – 30 PSI. For the specific dispensing pressure for a particular keg, check with your local beer distributor.

Is beer compressed in a keg?

The valve serves as an inlet for pressurized gas and an outlet for the beer. Each valve consists of a spring loaded valve mechanism connected to a tube that extends to the bottom of the keg. When the spring is compressed by activating the coupler, compressed gas is let in.

Are beer kegs carbonated?

Most carbonation in kegs is done using pressurized CO2 from a gas cylinder, a process called force carbonation. The fastest results can be achieved when the beer in the keg is at a cold temperature. This will let the CO2 diffuse into the beer more efficiently and at a faster rate.

How are beer kegs filled?

keg is below the pressure in the supply keg. The fill stop assembly has a small hole - that meters the gas from the receiving keg - slowly. This allow the beer on the supply side - to slowly fill the keg as the gas in the receiving side is slowly released - minimizing foaming.

How do Beer Kegs Work? - All About Kegs - Draught Beer Explained

Are beer kegs aluminum or steel?

Beer kegs are made of stainless steel, or less commonly, of aluminium. A keg has a single opening on one end, called a "bung". A tube called a "spear" extends from the opening to the other end.

Can you fill a keg yourself?

To fill or refill a keg yourself, you will need an appropriate level of CO2 so the beer will flow and maintain its carbonation. The tanks range from 2.5 to 20 pounds in size, but it only takes about ⅓ of a pound to dispense a 5-gallon keg. You can get empty CO2 tanks refilled, but be cautious.

What PSI should I force carbonate beer?

To burst carbonate your homebrew, crank up your CO₂ regulator to 30 psi for 24 hours. Then reduce down to normal serving pressure, which is around 12 psi to15 psi (depending on your beer line length and altitude). That should leave your beer 75% carbonated.

What PSI should I Carbonate my beer at?

For most ales (including pale ales, IPAs, ambers, etc.) that come from the brewery with a carbonation volume of about 2.1 to 2.6, you want to set your regulator from about 7 to 13 psi. For lagers, a regulator set between 10 and 14 psi works best.

Why is my Kegerator pouring foam?

The most common causes are: Incorrect Temperature – If the beer is too warm or too cold, it will be more easily disturbed and pour as foam. In most models, the beer line is not refrigerated so the first pour will usually be a bit warmer and a bit more foam.

Do beer kegs need CO2?

In any draft beer system, the CO2 gas cylinder and pressure regulator are crucial components that start the process of dispensing beer. ... CO2 displaces beer at a continuous pressure, replacing the poured beer by occupying the space that otherwise would be empty in the keg.

Do kegs need CO2?

For the majority of draft beer dispense systems, CO2 is the primary gas used to get the beer out of the keg and into your glass. The pressurized gas from the tank propels the beer through the keg coupler via the beer line.

Where can I buy CO2 for my Kegerator?

Where can I get my CO2 tank filled? Local welding supply stores, locations that fill fire extinguishers, local home brew shops, and sporting stores that sell paint ball guns are among the most likely places to get your CO2 tank filled.

What should CO2 be set at for Kegerator?

What pressure should my CO2 tank be set to? This will depend on the beer you are serving but most American breweries recommend a pressure between 10-14 PSI.

Should I turn off CO2 Kegerator?

If you have no leaks and your beer is carbed you can disconnect it and it will,( and it should ) have no loss off pressure. If you leave it connected you will not waste any c02 at all. Once you have the proper pressure, and no leaks, your good to go.

How do you get beer out of a keg without CO2?

Use a bicycle pump with a needle used for blowing up sports ball to replace the CO2. Attach the needle to the CO2 line and use duct tape etc. to secure it. Once you have made sure there is no leakage occurring, begin pumping and open the tap. The liquid will begin to flow out of the tap without the need for siphoning.

How soon can you drink beer after Kegging?

A more accelerated method of force carbonation involves putting 30-40 PSI of CO2 into your chilled keg of beer and shaking or rocking the keg to diffuse the gas at a faster rate. Depending on how cold your beer is, and how much you agitate the beer, you can have your beer carbonated anywhere from 12 hours to 3 days.

How long should beer lines be in a Kegerator?

Typical kegerators with draft towers usually have about 1.5 feet distance from the top of the keg to the faucet tap, so with a flow rate of 10 seconds per pint using a 3/16" inner diameter beer line you would need around 8 feet of beer line if you were dispensing a keg served with 10 PSI of pressure.

How long should keg sit before tapping it?

Do not agitate the keg. If there has been excessive agitation during transportation, allow the keg to settle for 1 to 2 hours before tapping. Make sure the beer faucet is in the off position prior to tapping.

How much CO2 does it take to force carbonate a keg?

One 5lb Co2 tank is usually enough to carbonate and serve 6 or more five- gallon Corny kegs. The Regulator: How it Works: The Co2 Regulator essentially takes the pressure of the gas of the top of the tank and reduces it to a lower, controlled pressure.

How do you CO2 a keg of beer?

Agitating the keg increases the contact area between CO2 and beer even further, promoting faster diffusion of CO2 into the beer. Continue to shake the keg for 20-30 minutes then lower the pressure to 20 PSI and allow the keg to carbonate for 2-3 days. Check the carbonation levels and enjoy!

Are kegs refillable?

Half-barrel sized kegs store the equivalent of 165 cans of beer – lasting at least six-to-eight weeks refrigerated before it starts to lose its freshness. The reusable keg can then be refilled, reducing waste and saving you time and money on more frequent beer runs. Kegs are also extremely durable and long-lasting.

Will a brewery fill my keg?

If you're a brewer, you are not allowed to fill a keg that doesn't belong to you with your beer; dispense beer from such a keg in your brewpub; ship or sell such a keg into the trade via wholesaler, retailer or direct to consumer sale.

How long does a keg last?

For a properly stored keg in a kegerator, how long the beer will remain fresh will depend on the style of beer. Pasteurized beers can stay fresh from three to six months. For non-pasteurized beers, you can expect the keg to stay fresh approximately two months.
